Between Liminality and Transgression: Experimental Voice in Avant-Garde Performance
BETWEEN LIMINALITY AND TRANSGRESSION: EXPERIMENTAL VOICE IN AVANT-GARDE PERFORMANCE _________________________________________________________________ A thesis submitted in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Theatre and Film Studies in the University of Canterbury by Emma Johnston ______________________ University of Canterbury 2014 ii Abstract This thesis explores the notion of ‘experimental voice’ in avant-garde performance, in the way it transgresses conventional forms of vocal expression as a means of both extending and enhancing the expressive capabilities of the voice, and reframing the social and political contexts in which these voices are heard. I examine these avant-garde voices in relation to three different liminal contexts in which the voice plays a central role: in ritual vocal expressions, such as Greek lament and Māori karanga, where the voice forms a bridge between the living and the dead; in electroacoustic music and film, where the voice is dissociated from its source body and can be heard to resound somewhere between human and machine; and from a psychoanalytic perspective, where the voice may bring to consciousness the repressed fears and desires of the unconscious. The liminal phase of ritual performance is a time of inherent possibility, where the usual social structures are inverted or subverted, but the liminal is ultimately temporary and conservative. Victor Turner suggests the concept of the ‘liminoid’ as a more transgressive alternative to the liminal, allowing for permanent and lasting social change. It may be in the liminoid realm of avant-garde performance that voices can be reimagined inside the frame of performance, as a means of exploring new forms of expression in life.

This was the birth of his first book, And to Think That I Saw It on Mulberry Street, under the pen name everyone knows today, Dr. Seuss. Prior to his death in 1991, Seuss wrote over 60 books, using three separate pen names. His wacky world of children's books became a household name after the release of The Cat in the Hat. With a children's author as famous as Dr. Seuss, it is hard to imagine such a known figure to be targeted for his work, right? On March 4, Dr. Seuss’s books came under fire by “cancel culture,” because some of them depict stereotypical and offensive views against people of color. Dr. Seuss Enterprises has said the portrayals in the books are hurtful and wrong, but the statement is not enough to persuade the Dr. Seuss is known for his wacky world of masses. The first thing I wanted to do after coming to Christ was write a song about it. Apparently I’m not alone. Through many years as a music business executive and now as President of Nashville Christian Songwriters, I have encountered thousands of aspiring songwriters who have a common passion to bring men, women, and children into a deeper sense of worshiping God through their original songs. The flood tide of these songwriters is only increasing, showing no signs of slowing as far as I can tell. In the three years since NCS has begun to offer coaching for songwriters, I have personally spoken with over 1,300 such songwriters about our programs, and, without fail, each of them has relayed a similar story. “I just feel called to songwriting and I know God has something bigger for me,” they all say in one way or the other.

SOUNDING AND SIGNIFYIN’: REPRESENTATION AND THE THEATRICAL BLACK VOICE by Michael John Mohammed Dissertation Committee: Professor Kelly Parkes, Sponsor Professor Randall Allsup Approved by the Committee on the Degree of Doctor of Education Date May 20, 2020 Submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the Degree of Doctor of Education in Teachers College, Columbia University 2020 ABSTRACT SOUNDING AND SIGNIFYIN’: REPRESENTATION AND THE THEATRICAL BLACK VOICE Michael John Mohammed This qualitative dissertation identifies musical strategies that black theatre singers use when presenting and re-presenting music that integrates western classical vocal aesthetics with stylistic genres of traditionally black forms like gospel, jazz, and blues. This study investigates the use of the voice by five black opera and musical theatre performers and the approaches that they take in the representation of music that requires integrated vocality, which integrates elements from western classical traditions with those from black popular and folk idioms. Data were collected through audio/visual analysis, interviews, and video stimulated recall, presented through narrative analysis. Three emergent themes are explored are as follows: Authenticity is rooted in the singer’s experience of cultural traditions and expression; technique is a means of personal and cultural expression and provides the opportunity for personal liberation, and; a singer positions themself at the nexus of their cultural legacy as a learner, exemplar, advocate, and transmitter of culture. The implications for educators at the tertiary level are discussed in the final chapter. Alignment of technique, personal expression, and identity infuses a singer’s sound with meaning; fostering the black singer’s use of their cultural capital helps them transform their life experiences into artistic interpretation.
