The museum welcomes the public to its main gallery with a - City College Grotesques unique exhibit showcasing fourteen plaster maquettes of grotesques that were designed some 120 years ago by the architectural firm of Museum Exhibit George B. Post & Sons for the College of the City of New York. The rotating exhibit (story on page two) is one in a continuing - Crossword Contest! series of collaborations between the Historical Society and commu- nity residents. The main gallery also displays “What Put Somerset - Pikes Peak Hills on the Map”, a visual narrative of the five towns. The muse- um shop offers visitors unique Somerset Hills items and local history - Museum Acquisitions books. The top floor of the museum comprises the 1890s school- room, teacher’s office and student classwork. - Past Municipality Proposals The trustees thank museum visitors in advance for adhering to our continuing Covid-19 safety guidelines of limited capacity, face - SCC&HC Grant Award masks and social distancing. The New Gilded Age May 24, 2020 Ice Skating on Tuxedo Lake (Source: Library of Congress) History never repeats itself, but the Kaleidoscopic combinations of the pictured present often seem to be constructed out of the broken fragments of antique legends. - The Gilded Age: A Tale of To-Day, by Mark Twain (1874) ©2020 Epsilon Theory 1 All rights reserved. Winston Churchill has probably since eclipsed him in this regard, but for decades Mark Twain was the person to whom you attributed a quotation if you didn’t know who said it. That whole bit he did about history rhyming but not repeating? It’s probably apocryphal, too, but at least Twain actually did write the thing that spawned the briefer expression. Strangely, it comes from what is probably his worst book, an attempted collaboration with another author that never really works. Yet even the title of this forgettable novel managed to spur the creation of a new term: The Gilded Age. Now, because it makes for better storytelling, modern conversations about the Gilded Age as a period tend to focus on excess. We imagine – both individually and in our artistic representations of the period – lavish parties, opulence, and absurd displays of wealth and status. And yes, it was a time when neither taxes nor anti-monopoly power had much authority to displace the ambitions of the extremely wealthy. In Manhattan and Newport, old and new money competed openly for social status. If that is what we mean when we use the expression – a time in which the doctrine of Social Darwinism made conspicuous consumption not only acceptable but morally proper – we wouldn’t be very wrong. -

FOUNDATION Spring 2021 www.palmbeachpreservation.org 561.832.0731 NEWS LA CLARIDAD Image by Brantley Reflections on Wildly Exquisite: Florida’s Native Plants By Susan Lerner, Director of Horticulture Wildly Exquisite: Florida’s Native Plants celebrates the rich diversity of Florida’s indigenous plants. The Foundation is delighted to partner with the American Society of Botanical Artists for this exhibition. This perfect pairing of new botanical art with the Preservation Foundation’s mission to celebrate the botanical heritage of Palm Beach is reflective of the early documentation of the flora and fauna in the New World and the delight of discovery. It would be a mistake, however, to think that this exhibition is exclusively about lovely artworks of interesting flora. Like Pan’s Garden, the first all-native botanical garden in Florida, it aims to raise awareness of the beauty and function of native plants in Florida landscapes, and to encourage home gardeners, landscape architects, city planners and others to realize the impact that plant choices have in our world. The well-known eighteenth-century explorers John Bartram (botanist), his son William Bartram (naturalist, botanist, artist, and explorer) and Mark Catesby (naturalist and artist) were followed to Florida in the nineteenth century by John James Audubon (ornithologist, naturalist, and painter). Each of these trailblazers documented their exciting Florida discoveries with words and/or paintings that became significant natural history resources in their day and remain so in ours. These and other naturalists chronicled a Florida comprised of vibrant landscapes unlike any other. To William Bartram, the “spring-fed streams, sandy banks, and ancient trees formed a natural paradise”.
