Left-libertarianism is not a new star on the sky of political philosophy, but it was through the recent publication of Peter Vallentyne and Hillel Steiner’s anthologies that it became clearly visible as a contemporary movement with distinct historical roots. “Left- libertarian theories of justice,” says Vallentyne, “hold that agents are full self-owners and that natural resources are owned in some egalitarian manner. Unlike most versions of egalitarianism, left-libertarianism endorses full self-ownership, and thus places specific limits on what others may do to one’s person without one’s permission. Unlike right- libertarianism, it holds that natural resources may be privately appropriated only with the permission of, or with a significant payment to, the members of society. Like right- libertarianism, left-libertarianism holds that the basic rights of individuals are ownership rights. Left-libertarianism is promising because it coherently underwrites both some demands of material equality and some limits on the permissible means of promoting this equality” (Vallentyne and Steiner (2000a), p 1; emphasis added). -

3 THE CASE FOR ANIMAL RIGHTS: A DECADE’S PASSING During the academic year 1993-94 it was my h&or to serve as president of the American Society for Value Inquiry (ASVI). The duties of this office are blessedly few; none is onerous, and all have the active sup- port of the exceptional group of people who have made the society one of the jewels in philosophy’s crown. I am very grateful to the members of ASVI not only for the professional honor they bestowed on me but also for moti- vating me to answer some of the more important objections raised against my book The Case for Animal Rights, first published in 1983. The occasion to offer my answers was the society’s annual Presidential Address, which I presented on December 29,1993, in conjunction with the Eastern Division Meetings of the American Philosophical Association. Had it not been for the need to prepare something special for this event, I am not sure I would have taken up the issues I address in these pages. I certain- ly did not want to spend my life defending myself against the criticisms of others; like anyone with a glimmer of a creative spark, I wanted to explore new territory-new for me, in any event. I do not know whether I made a lasting contribution with the work I did during the decade after the publi- cation of The Case for Animal Rights, much of it devoted to interpreting the moral philosophy of the early twentieth-century English philosopher G. -

This course is an interdisciplinary elective that critically explores a key tradition of 'neoconservative' political thought that has roots in classical economic theory and that has been very influential in American politics. Political libertarianism is a theory of social justice that gives primacy to an ideal of individual liberty deriving from Thomas Hobbes and John Locke, and to belief in free-market systems that traces to Adam Smith. It advocates minimal government limits on inequalities resulting from voluntary exchanges and contracts, and maximum freedom for markets forces, and tries to base this on a moral conception of individual rights. While elements of this ideal were expressed by influential US reformers from Patrick Henry to Thoreau, its modern American form was established from the 1940s on in reaction against FDR =s New Deal, European socialism, and of course Communism. Through Ayn Rand's novels and the writings of economists like F.A. Hayek and Milton Friedman, arguments were developed against the rising welfare state, increasing health and safety regulations, entitlement programs and graduated taxation schemes. By the early 1980s, libertarian critiques of Abig government @ in general, including federal spending on projects and income taxation had become so influential that they strongly affected party platforms, and have been a major force in American politics ever since. -

The Keys to British Success in South Asia COLIN WATTERSON “God is on everyone’s side…and in the last analysis he is on the side with plenty of money and large armies” -Jean Anouilh For a period of a period of over one hundred years, the British directly controlled the subcontinent of India. How did a small island nation come on the Edge of the North Atlantic come to dominate a much larger landmass and population located almost 4000 miles away? Historian Sir John Robert Seeley wrote that the British Empire was acquired in “a fit of absence of mind” to show that the Empire was acquired gradually, piece-by-piece. This will paper will try to examine some of the most important reasons which allowed the British to successfully acquire and hold each “piece” of India. This paper will examine the conditions that were present in India before the British arrived—a crumbling central political power, fierce competition from European rivals, and Mughal neglect towards certain portions of Indian society—were important factors in British control. Economic superiority was an also important control used by the British—this paper will emphasize the way trade agreements made between the British and Indians worked to favor the British. Military force was also an important factor but this paper will show that overwhelming British force was not the reason the British military was successful—Britain’s powerful navy, ability to play Indian factions against one another, and its use of native soldiers were keys to military success. Freedom Political Theory Project Course Description: Freedom has been called the greatest political concept of the modern world. But what is freedom? And if freedom is important, what should we do about it? Does freedom conflict with other important values, such as gender equality or distributive fairness? Can political systems that claim allegiance to freedom also make room for other values? Is the best society the one that cares only about freedom? Format: This is a demanding, reading intensive freshman seminar. As a seminar, classroom discussion is of the utmost importance. Be sure to complete all the readings before class meets each week, and come to class ready to join in the conversation. In this class, we are a team. So join in. Presentations: Each week, seminar will be opened by a brief presentation prepared by a team of two students. When it is your turn to present, your mission is NOT to teach the whole class, or to become world-class experts on the issues at hand. Rather, each presentation team is expected to study the assigned readings carefully, briefly summarize the main points, and to identify a few fundamental questions or challenges posed by the readings that they found most interesting (or confusing!). Requirements: 1. Students are expected to attend in each seminar, and to participate actively. We will allow one excused absence during the semester. Any additional absence will be penalized by a grade unit deduction from your final grade (so, if you had an A++, your final grade would be reduced to a measly A+, though of course if you had a B-, that would become a C+. -

The familiar political equipoise was disturbed by the widening of the franchise and the emergence of radical new threats in the form of New Liberalism and Socialism. Some conservatives responded to these changes by emphasising the importance of individual liberty and the preservation of the existing social structure and institutions. -
Nozick's Libertarian Critique of Regan
68 BETWEEN THE SPECIES Nozick’s Libertarian Critique of Regan ABSTRACT Robert Nozick’s oft-quoted review of Tom Regan’s The Case for Animal Rights levels a range of challenges to Regan’s philosophy. Many commentators have focused on Nozick’s putative defense of speciesism, but this has led to them overlooking other aspects of the critique. In this paper, I draw attention to two. First is Nozick’s criti- cism of Regan’s political theory, which is best understood relative to Nozick’s libertarianism. Nozick’s challenge invites the possibility of a libertarian account of animal rights – which is not as oxymo- ronic as it may first sound. Second is Nozick’s criticism of Regan’s axiological theory, which is best understood relative to Nozick’s own axiological inegalitarianism. While Nozick’s axiology has distaste- ful consequences, it should not be dismissed out-of-hand. Nozick’s challenges to Regan – and Nozick’s wider animal ethics – are rich and original, warranting attention from contemporary theorists for reasons beyond mere historical interest. It continues to have con- siderable influence on philosophical literature in animal ethics to this day – as this special issue demonstrates. Regan belongs on a short list of the most influential and significant normative philosophers of the 21st century. Another philosopher who un- doubtedly belongs on this list is Robert Nozick, most famous as the author of the 1974 Anarchy, State, and Utopia (hereafter, ASU), in which he offers a right libertarian theory of justice.
