23. Relativism and Radical Conservatism

Relativism and radical conservatism Timo Pankakoski and Jussi Backman ABSTRACT. The chapter tackles the complex, tension-ridden, and often paradoxical relationship between relativism and conservatism. We focus particularly on radical conservatism, an early twentieth-century German movement that arguably constitutes the climax of conservatism’s problematic relationship with relativism. We trace the shared genealogy of conservatism and historicism in nineteenth-century Counter-Enlightenment thought and interpret radical conservatism’s ambivalent relation to relativism as reflecting this heritage. Emphasizing national particularity, historical uniqueness, and global political plurality, Carl Schmitt and Hans Freyer moved in the tradition of historicism, stopping short of full relativism. Yet they utilized relativistic elements – such as seeing irrational decisions or the demands of “life” as the basis of politics – to discredit notions of universal political morality and law, thereby underpinning their authoritarian agendas. Oswald Spengler, by contrast, took the relativistic impulses to the extreme, interweaving his conservative authoritarianism and nationalism with full-fledged epistemic, moral, and political relativism. Martin Heidegger has recently been perceived as the key philosopher of radical conservatism, and his 1 thought arguably channeled antimodern aspects of historicism into contemporary political thought. We conclude by analyzing how some radical conservative arguments involving cultural relativism and plurality still reverberate in contemporary theorists such as Samuel Huntington, Aleksandr Dugin, and Alain de Benoist. -

Jones: 1 Andrew Jones Message for the Pandemonium: Oswald Spengler, The Decline of the West, and the potential for the German people. Oswald Spengler was born in 1880 in Blankenburg, Germany. His father was a bureaucrat who worked for the Duchy of Brunswick in the German Empire. He studied history at the universities of Munich, Berlin, and Halle. Spengler found the Pre-Socratics to be fascinating. His academic career culminated in his doctoral thesis which focused on the Pre-Socratic philosopher Heraclitus. He worked as a teacher in Hamburg at a Realgymnasium or grammar school where he taught German history, science, and mathematics. Oswald Spengler found himself caught up into the turbulent events of 1914. What unfolded surprised many people, after all; he had been a simple school teacher from an unremarkable family in an unremarkable place in Germany. One historian referred to Spengler before 1918 as “nobody in particular, an Oberlehrer or Gymnasium teacher who had thrown up his job in 1910 in order to write.”1 Unable to serve his fatherland due to his weak heart, Spengler decided to do something radical. He worked to answer the most pressing question of the time and perhaps the most pressing question of the Twentieth Century. Spengler sought to explain why the great powers of Europe destroyed the peace, power, and prosperity of Europe to fight a horrific war that consumed the continent while involving the entire world. Spengler recognized the utter madness of the war as well as its lack of guiding reason and sought to find refuge from the deluge of insanity. -

Although he warns that the end of Faustian (western) culture is nigh, Spengler suggests that the death of the culture might be forestalled if a rapprochement can be brought about between the technologized powers of Reason and the remains of cultural life. This portrayal of Reason as a salvific force seems to contradict Spengler’s typical depiction of Reason as a violent anti-cultural force. This paper reconstructs Spengler’s account of Reason as both killer and preserver of western culture and argues that in both roles it remains inherently violent. Political Writings is the latest volume in the University of Illinois Press’s monumental Beauvoir Series, a seven-volume collaborative book project, edited by Margaret A. Simons and Sylvie Le Bon de Beauvoir. The aim of the series is to make available scholarly English translations of Beauvoir's writings. Most of the texts presented have previously been difficult to access; some because they were not translated into English, others because they were published in newspapers and editions that are now out of circulation. Some have not been published before. Simons and Le Bon have organized Beauvoir’s writings thematically, with philosophical, literary, political and feminist texts collected in each volume (the latter is not published yet). Additionally, the Beauvoir Series includes two volumes of Beauvoir’s Diary (a third is to be published). These volumes underlay her autobiographical writings, and also interestingly prefigure many ideas more fully developed in Beauvoir’s later works. The Beauvoir Series covers more than fifty years of writings, demonstrating her theoretical development and growing commitment to ethical and political questions of her time. At the same time, an impressive consistency with regard to her basic philosophical ideas and values is displayed. In addition to being mandatory reading for all Beauvoir scholars, the analyses carried out are unique and provocative, also in context with our contemporary issues. -

Spengler was one of the leading protagonists of cultural criticism in the 20th century. His oeuvre had been rooted in the German intellectual climate of the pre-war period and war years. The German tradition based on an ambivalent relation to modernity, after the German defeat suffered at the end of the First World War, emerged as the movement of “conservative revolution”. This new kind of conservatism, on the one hand, enthusiastically greeted technological advancement, while, on the other hand, rejected social and political moderni- zation. The opposition of the city and the country-side was a central theme of this way of thought. Spengler in his “morphology of world history” gave an outstanding place to this opposition. Our paper offers a reconstruction, in this respect, of the theory of Spengler. Introduction It is impossible to find an author in the philosophy of the 20th century who criticized in a harder manner the megalopolis and its way of life than Oswald Spengler. His challeng- ing, astounding and sometimes alarming metaphors are almost always interconnected with the critique of urban civilization. An Intellectual History of Social Isolation Eric Klinenberg Department of Sociology Northwestern University 1 Abstract During the last one hundred years “social isolation” has been one of the key concepts and core problems in American sociology, but an intellectual history of its curious life reveals strong conflict over its status. There are three specific purposes for this effort at conceptual clarification. First, to show how distinct generations of urban scholars have developed, deployed, and debunked the idea of social isolation and to chart its return to prominence in recent years. Second, to consider the methodological and theoretical sources of the term’s longevity, and to raise questions about the status of an urban poverty paradigm based on the isolation thesis. Third, to consider the social and sociological consequences of research focusing on the social isolation problem. This article documents how conventional uses of the category have muddled important social scientific debates about inequality and the city, and calls for a new vocabulary for the study of urban social processes.
