Bird banding, traditionally used in studies of migration, is limited by low recapture rates. Telemetry can only be applied to larger species and a limited number of birds. We show that analyses of multiple stable isotopes (d13C, d15N, d18O and dD) can provide an understanding of the number of breeding populations represented at large congregations of wintering birds, probable locations of these breeding populations, and which breeding populations do not contribute migrants to a wintering site. As Asia is thought to be the origin of many HPAI strains and the center of their evolution, and as bird migration is poorly understood in this part of the world, we recommend that, in addition to banding, satellite, and VHF telemetry, the stable isotope analysis of migration patterns should become a part of long-term surveillance studies. -

Because of the COVID situation, we're going to go through a number of COVID specific things and then we'll get into the Government Committee intro here. Due to social distancing requirements, seating in the hearing room is limited, very limited. We ask that you only enter the hearing room when it is necessary for you to attend your hearing. The bills will be taken up as posted outside the hearing on the wall. This work seeks to analyze the nature of this emerging phenomenon, illustrating the reasons behind the international expansion of Chinese multinationals, the factors that facilitate and hinder this process, the entry modes that they use and the strategic implications for Western companies of their sudden arrival on the new world stage. INTRODUCTION Around 200 years ago, Napoleon referred to China as a slumbering giant that was better to let lie because, when awakened, it would shake the world. In fact, some economic historians argue that we are not witnessing the birth of a new economic power but rather its rebirth. The Chinese call their own country Zhong Guo , which means “the central land” or “the middle kingdom”, and, in fact, this is not the first time that China can be found among the ranks of the leading world powers. Over the course of its thousands of years of history, it has lived through several periods of great splendor and development. Under the hegemony of the Western Han dynasty, between the third century BC and the first century AD, China opened up major trading routes—in particular, the Silk Road—which was the main commercial artery between Asia and Europe for hundreds of years. -

The Paris Agreement set a long-term temperature goal of holding the global average temperature increase to below 2.0℃ above pre-industrial levels, and pursuing efforts to limit this to 1.5℃, it is therefore important to understand the impacts of climate change under 1.5℃ and 2.0℃ warming scenarios for climate adaptation and mitigation. Here, climate scenarios by four Global Circulation Models (GCMs) for the baseline (2006-2015), 1.5℃ and 2.0℃ warming scenarios (2106-2115) were 15 used to drive the validated Variable Infiltration Capacity (VIC) hydrological model to investigate the impacts of global warming on river runoff and Terrestrial Ecosystem Water Retention (TEWR) in China. The trends in annual mean temperature, precipitation, river runoff and TEWR were analysed at the grid and basin scale. -

The Chinese in Spain Gladys Nieto* ABSTRACT During the past 15 years, the Chinese migrant community in Spain has grown significantly. Originally a small and dispersed population, it now ranks fourth among the migrant groups from non-European Union (EU) countries. Its increasing presence in daily urban life is evident everywhere. Even though the Chinese community has a long history of settlement in Spain, the Spanish population still considers the Chinese as a closed and somewhat mysterious community. References to exaggerated stereotypes and prejudices regarding their activities and social organization can often be overheard in daily conversations. However, China, usually considered exotic and remote, has recently assumed greater importance in Spain’s foreign policy. Thus, the Spanish Government has drawn up the Asia-Pacific Framework Plan for 2000- 2002 as part of its international policy considerations, thereby extending its interests to include areas well beyond its traditional foreign policy focus on Latin America. The Government’s objectives are to expand its economic relations with Asia, to enhance trade and tourism with the area, expand the development cooperation with China, the Philippines, and Viet Nam – countries defined as top priorities for the Spanish Government – and to reinforce linguistic and cultural ties with these countries (Bejarano, 2002). In support of the Asia-Pacific Framework Plan, the Casa Asia (House of Asia) was estab- lished in Barcelona in 2002, an institution created to organize academic and artistic activities in order to promote the knowledge of the region among Spaniards, and to foster political, economic, and cultural relations with Asia. The Government intends to pursue two important objectives related to the increasing commitments it is seeking to establish with China, and which are also of relevance to the overseas Chinese as the principal social actors in- volved. -

A New Chinese Economic Law Order? By Gregory Shaffer and Henry Gao China is incrementally developing a new, decentralized model of trade governance through a web of finance, trade, and investment initiatives involving memorandum of understandings, contracts, and trade and investment treaties. In this way, China could create a vast, Sino-centric, regional order in which the Chinese state plays a nodal role. This model reflects a component of China’s internal development in the 2000s, which supplements economic reform and opening up with infrastructure development. It starts with the financing of infrastructure as part of China’s Belt and Road Initiative, involving telecommunications networks, roads, airports, and ports, which Chinese companies build using Chinese standards. These projects enable China to export its excess capacity of steel, concrete, and other products. They also open new markets for Chinese products generally. China then complements this form of regional economic integration with a web of bilateral investment and free trade agreements that assure preferential access for Chinese goods, services, and capital. At the same time, it massively subsidizes technological innovation to reduce reliance on Western technology, while encouraging Chinese state-owned and private companies to acquire advanced technology abroad and luring Chinese scientists who study abroad to return to China. It implements these initiatives gradually to learn from trial and error, analogous to the country’s internal, pragmatic development model, reflected in the popular adage attributed to Deng Xiaoping — “crossing the river by feeling the stones.”1 But now, Chinese state-owned and private enterprises are internationalized and integrated within Sino-centric global production chains.
