Canadian Guiding Badges And Insignia Brownie Six/Circle Emblems Following the introduction of the Brownie program to provide Guiding for younger girls, and after the decision to base the new program on The Brownie Story, a further decision was made in 1919 to subdivide a Brownie Pack into smaller groups consisting of six girls. These smaller groups within the Pack were known as Sixes and were identified by a Six emblem bearing the name of some mythical fairy- like person from folklore. [Reference: POR (British, 1919)] The original Six emblems were brown felt; later versions were brown cotton with the edges bound in brown. In 1995, the term “Sixes” was replaced by the term “Circles”, and the shape of the emblems was changed as well. In 1972, three of the original twelve Six emblems were retired and in 1995 four new ones were added. Its appearance followed on the passage of almost 30 years since the publication in London during 1897 of Frank Atha Westbury's similarly titled work, and Jessie Mary Whitfield's The spirit of the bush fire and other Australian fairy tales in Sydney the following year. There had been numerous stories about local fairies and other fantastical creatures written in Australia prior to 1925, including the Reverend Charles Marson's Faery Stories (Marson 1891) and the many small booklets, articles and monographs by artist Ida Rentoul Outhwaite and her sister Annie from 1903; and May Gibbs' fairy-like Gumnut Babies from 1916 (Gibbs 1916, Organ 2012). -

Folklore, Loss, and Social Change in Nineteenth Century Cornwall BRENDAN McMAHON Introduction: the historical context The nineteenth century was a period of unprecedented social and economic change, at least in France and England. From France emerged the possibility of political transformation, which was to have profound historical consequences, and from England the no less momentous possibility of industrial transformation, forces which combined to create a triumphant liberal capitalism, which consolidated and extended its power in the latter half of the century.1 Britain, where much of this process began, was of course a scene of unprecedented social and industrial change at this time. Between 1831 and 1901 the population increased by ten percent in each decade, and cities grew disproportionately: when Victoria came to the throne only five towns in England and Wales had a population of more than 100,000; by the end of the reign, there were twenty three.2 Cornwall too was transformed: the population increased from 192,000 to 322,000, though it fell during the last three decades of the century due to recession and emigration, as we shall see.3 Cornish people played a big part in the transformation of Britain, and the wider world, and it would be hard to imagine the Industrial Revolution without Humphry Davy, Richard Trevithick, and the countless Cornish engineers and miners who made the wheels turn, everywhere from Mexico to South Australia.4 The landscape itself was changed forever. At the beginning of the century Cornwall was the world’s biggest copper producer, and technological innovation caused both copper and tin production to soar; old mines were re-opened and between 1800 and 1837 the number of workings rose from seventy five to over 200. -

Hereford ii University of Washington Abstract Sleep, Sickness, and Spirituality: Altered States and Victorian Visions of Femininity in British and American Art, 1850-1915 Kimberly E. Hereford Chair of the Supervisory Committee: Professor Susan Casteras Art History This dissertation examines representations in art of the Victorian woman in “altered states.” Though characterized in Victorian art in a number of ways, women are most commonly stereotyped as physically listless and mentally vacuous. The images examined show the Victorian female in a languid and at times reclining or supine pose in these representations. In addition, her demeanor implies both emotional and physical depletion, and there is both a pronounced abandonment of the physical and a collapsing effect, as if all mental faculties are withdrawing inward. Each chapter is dedicated to examining one of these distinct but interrelated types of femininity that flourished throughout British and American art from c. 1850 to c. 1910. The chapters for this dissertation are organized sequentially to demonstrate a selected progression of various states of consciousness, from the most obvious (the sleeping woman) to iii the more nuanced (the female Aesthete and the female medium). In each chapter, there is the visual perception of the Victorian woman as having access to otherworldly conditions of one form or another. -

The Matusewitch name was virtually synonymous with the concertina and accordion, two bellows instruments invented in the first third of the nineteenth century, for eight decades. My grandfather Gregory (1886-1939), the family patriarch, concertized extensively in Russia and Europe before moving the family to the United States in 1923, where he had a relatively brief but lively career. He appeared in major concert halls, the vaudeville circuit, early American radio broadcasts, and Jewish variety and fund-raising events. Boris (1918-1978), the younger of Gregory’s two sons, succeeded him as America’s leading concertinist and teacher of the instrument. Over the course of a rich and varied career, he performed at west coast nightclubs, gave annual concerts at Carnegie Recital Hall, was a featured soloist with orchestras, and teamed up with dancer Rod Strong in an innovative combination of music and dance. -
