Spine Symposium 2021 The Duke Spine Symposium is an interactive, multidisciplinary CME event designed to emphasize state-of-the art treatment of spinal disorders. This course is instructed by leaders in many fields of spine care, including degenerative, minimally invasive, adult and pediatric deformity, pain management, physiatry, anesthesiology, interventional radiology, and physical therapy. All lectures are followed by question-and-answer sessions as well as case discussions to highlight nuances in evaluation and treatment. Objectives The symposium is designed to increase competence and provide the most up-to-date, evidence- based review of the management of patients with spinal disorders. At the end of the course, participants should be able to: • Evaluate and manage preoperative and postoperative spinal pain in a cost-effective manner based on best available evidence o Pain management in the treatment of spinal disease o Pharmacological management of spinal pain o Role of neuromodulation in the treatment of refractory pain • Identify best candidates for conservative management of various spinal disease, review of available treatment options including procedural based, and short- and long-term outcomes of these therapies using an evidence-based approach o Cervical intralaminar versus transforaminal steroid injections o Ablative techniques in the treatment of spinal disease o Risk reduction in interventional spine procedures o Role of acupuncture in patients with cervical and lumbar spine conditions o Common sport injuries of the cervical and lumbar spine o Benefits of physical therapy o Clinical approach to patients with hip pain o Radiofrequency ablation for facet joint pain o Spine injection techniques (fluoro/ultrasound hybrid) o Treatment and work-up for SI joint ablation • Discuss treatment of spinal disorder with a focus on health care economic, delivery of care, patient education, physician education and case review, and methods to improve outcomes, value and quality o Social media and the impact on spine education o Virtual global spine conference platform o Evidence in guiding informed choice in spine surgery o Role of PROs in improving the quality of spine care o Improving surgical spine outcomes by optimizing patients, surgeons, and hospitals o Health economics and spine surgery o Evidence-based, non-surgical spine care • Develop a systematic and reliable approach for evaluating patients with degenerative and complex spinal diseases and deformities and formulate a non-operative or surgical treatment strategy o Adolescent idiopathic scoliosis o Thoracic disc disease o When to say no to surgery o Sagittal spino-pelvic alignment: From theory to clinical application o Combined presentation: Sagittal spino-pelvic alignment: from theory to clinical application o Localizing cervical radiculopathy symptoms: What few spine specialists know o Use of AI in spine surgery planning • Discuss the impact on current and future spinal care of innovative spine procedural treatments and surgical techniques. o Kyphoplasty/vertebroplasty: Patient evaluation, imaging, indications, literature review, and case examples o Update on cervical arthroplasty o Regenerative treatments for discogenic low back pain o Minimally invasive algorithms to treat spinal deformity surgery o Growth modulation techniques in early onset scoliosis: Current state of the art vs. case discussion o Endoscopic transforaminal Interbody fusion: Description of technique, pearls, and pitfalls • Provide an evidence-based approach in strategies for preoperative optimization of co- morbidities o Intraoperative optimization in high-risk patients undergoing spine surgery o Preoperative optimization in high-risk patients undergoing spine surgery Agenda Saturday, May 22, 8:00 a.m.—2:45 p.m., EDT 8:00 a.m. Welcome and Introductions -
