Hippotragus equinus – Roan Antelope authorities as there may be no significant genetic differences between the two. Many of the Roan Antelope in South Africa are H. e. cottoni or equinus x cottoni (especially on private properties). Assessment Rationale This charismatic antelope exists at low density within the assessment region, occurring in savannah woodlands and grasslands. Currently (2013–2014), there are an observed 333 individuals (210–233 mature) existing on nine formally protected areas within the natural distribution range. Adding privately protected subpopulations and an Cliff & Suretha Dorse estimated 0.8–5% of individuals on wildlife ranches that may be considered wild and free-roaming, yields a total mature population of 218–294 individuals. Most private Regional Red List status (2016) Endangered subpopulations are intensively bred and/or kept in camps C2a(i)+D*†‡ to exclude predators and to facilitate healthcare. Field National Red List status (2004) Vulnerable D1 surveys are required to identify potentially eligible subpopulations that can be included in this assessment. Reasons for change Non-genuine: While there was an historical crash in Kruger National Park New information (KNP) of 90% between 1986 and 1993, the subpopulation Global Red List status (2008) Least Concern has since stabilised at c. 50 individuals. Overall, over the past three generations (1990–2015), based on available TOPS listing (NEMBA) Vulnerable data for nine formally protected areas, there has been a CITES listing None net population reduction of c. 23%, which indicates an ongoing decline but not as severe as the historical Endemic Edge of Range reduction. Svensson, and Peter John Taylor Abstract Scientific investigations on the mammals of Angola started over 150 years ago, but information remains scarce and scattered, with only one recent published account. Here we provide a synthesis of the mammals of Angola based on a thorough survey of primary and grey literature, as well as recent unpublished records. We present a short history of mammal research, and provide brief information on each species known to occur in the country. Particular attention is given to endemic and near endemic species. We also provide a zoogeographic outline and information on the conservation of Angolan mammals. We found confirmed records for 291 native species, most of which from the orders Rodentia (85), Chiroptera (73), Carnivora (39), and Cetartiodactyla (33). There is a large number of endemic and near endemic species, most of which are rodents or bats. The large diversity of species is favoured by the wide P. 25 Years On: a Look at Endangered Species Richard Fitter What has happened to the animals and birds listed as endangered species 25 years ago at IUCN's first technical meeting? The FPS Hon. Secretary investigates their present status and looks at the conservation methods that have proved most effective. In August 1949 two lists of endangered species were drawn up, one of fourteen mammals, the other of thirteen birds, all described as 'in need of emergency action if they are to be saved from extinction'. This was at the First Technical Conference, at Lake Success, of the International Union for the Protection of Nature, as IUCN (the International Union for Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources) was then called. It is of some interest now, 25 years later, to review these lists and see what, if anything has been done to save these animals. The mammals comprised two marsupials—thylacine and western banded anteater—chinchilla, Asiatic lion, Caribbean and Mediterranean monk seals, Addo bush elephant, mountain zebra, great Indian and Javan rhinos, Burmese brow-antlered deer, and three bovids—European bison, North African hartebeest and giant sable antelope. Of these fourteen, two are now regarded as extinct: the Caribbean monk seal Monachus tropicalis, last definitely reported in 1952, which a very recent and thorough survey has failed to rediscover; and the North African or bubal hartebeest Alcelaphus buselaphus buselaphus, which has not been reliably reported since 1925. Of the thylacine Thylacinus cynocephalus of Tasmania there has also been no recent scientifically verified sighting, though there have been a number of apparently well-founded but still unverified ones. -

Critically Endangered Species Lesson Plan th (4 , 5th, 6th grade science) Objective: To provide an understanding of critically endangered species, how they differ from endangered species, and why they are critically endangered. Definitions: Critically Endangered Species: Critically endangered is the highest risk category that can be assigned to a species on IUCN Red List. These species are wild species whose populations are believed to have decreased by 80% within three generations.1 Endangered Species: Endangered species face a lesser risk of extinction than critically endangered species; however they are still at risk. These species have wild population sizes so small that they are at risk for extinction. IUCN Red List: The International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) established the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species as a way to determine the relative risk of extinction a plant or animal species faces based on its taxonomic, conservation status, and distribution information. 2 IUCN Breakdown of Threats 1 http://www.itsnature.org/category/endangered/critically/ 2 http://www.iucnredlist.org/about Background: The rapid decrease in population among these species means that we must put forth greater conservation efforts to ensure that these species do not go extinct. A species is determined to be critically endangered according to a set of criteria set forth by the IUCN. A species will be determined “critically endangered” if it meets any of the listed qualifications of the Criteria for the Critically Endangered, Endangered, and Vulnerable Species. Species listed as critically endangered can be found across the globe and in almost every family of wildlife. -

On Malilangwe Wildlife Reserve (MWR) alone, sable numbers crashed from 237 animals in 1994 to only 62 by 2005. The purpose of this study was to determine the cause of the decline and the continued lack of success in the sable population. The study had three specific aims: 1) to assess the current viability of the sable population at MWR and understand the sensitivity of the population to environmental changes, 2) to gain an understanding of the space-use and habitat selection of sable at the landscape scale, and 3) to speculate on the possible causes of the decline in sable antelope numbers at MWR.
