LENTEN STUDY GUIDE 1 INTRODUCTION Before Lent was the tradition we understand today, an opportunity for church members to repent and seek spiritual renewal, it had a different meaning. Originally, Lent was understood as an intense season of preparation for “Catechumens” (converts under training) who were preparing to be baptized on Easter. The church would walk with these new believers by encouraging, supporting, and praying for them towards the greatest of celebrations: Easter Sunday. This year, as a church we’re taking that 40-day journey of Lent alongside those of us who are preparing to be baptized. To be baptized is to declare a dependence on the King, Jesus Christ. We declare that through his life, death, and resurrection we have brought into his family; sons and daughters for all eternity. This dependence is not only a one- time declaration for salvation, but a daily dependence on his Spirit, the Bible, and the church body of which we are a part. Therefore, our Lenten journey will coincide with our Sermon series on The Lord’s Prayer and focus on deepening our dependence on our Good Father. As we walk these 40 days to Easter Sunday, this devotional is designed to assist us in the journey. The Scripture verses, questions, prayers, and quotes are a resource to carve out time each day where you’re seeking God through prayer. -

Shields, Advisor In her edited volume Plays for the End of the Century, Bonnie Marranca argues that “some of the most thoughtful plays written today join poetic language to a new spiritual energy that addresses metaphysical questions, the crisis of spirit, and theological concepts such as sin, redemption, evil, and grace – formulated within an iconography of saints, angels, heaven, and hell” (xii). This project explores this issue, and demonstrates how playwrights dialogue with Christianity and culture in meaningful ways. The plays considered, which were not written for specifically Christian audiences, are Anne Chislett’s Quiet in the Land (1983), David Rambo’s God’s Man in Texas (1998), Djanet Sears’s The Adventures of a Black Girl in Search of God (2003), Arlene Hutton’s As It Is In Heaven (2003), Craig Wright’s Grace (2005), and Mark St. Germain’s A Plague of Angels (2006). In examining Christianity in the contemporary moment, consideration is given to how these playscripts function in a culture where the modern and the postmodern are understood as conditions of knowledge, referencing Linda Hutcheon and Jean-Francois Lyotard. Combining biblical interpretation with script analysis and cultural criticism, connections between Christianity and theatre are explored, applying the theories of Philip Yancey, Robert Webber, and Brian McLaren, among others, to investigate a “new essentialism” in the contemporary cultural moment. -

Sofia Sjö Beyond Cinematic Stereotypes Using Religion to Imagine Gender Differently ABSTRACT In films, religious characters are often gendered in quite traditional ways, but there are some notable exceptions. This article discusses two Scandinavian films that partly break the mold. The analysis illustrates how in films varied forms of religion are gen- dered quite differently, and explores the ways in which religious themes can open up for alternative male and female characters. Different ways of understanding the representations are discussed and related to views on the place and role of religion in the contemporary Scandinavian context. The article draws on the mediatization of religion theory as a theoretical framework, but also highlights the challenges that complex images of gender and religion pose to this theory. She received her doctorate in Comparative Religion from Åbo Akademi University in 2007. Her research interests include: religion and film, religion and media, digital religion, religion and gender, religion and youth. INTRODUCTION Gender and film has long been an interest of mine, as has been the relationship between religion and film. I have also occasionally combined these interests and discussed the gendering of religious characters and themes in films.1 In this article, I want to further explore questions of religion and gender in film, with the focus on Scandinavian films, a favorite area of research of mine.
