GWRRA ILLINOIS ASSISTANT DISTRICT DIR. -GENE & ANNETTE SHIELDS

I have to say I think the Summer Rally was the best I have attended. Not the weather, but the city of Pontiac and all they did for our group. The facilities were great, the attractions were great and the Tourism staff were great. And of course our own District Director, Mary Adams and “Not My Job Bob” did a great job in Gene & Annette Shields making it the best rally ever. It goes to show how you can make an Assistant Director, IL event into a good or great event when you have leadership that District depends on a team working together and members that get involved. Sometimes it only takes a few doing little things that make a BIG difference in how your event ends up.

It was unfortunate that chapter L had one member that had to spend a few days in the hospital, after he got home, because of the heat. It should make you think of how do I avoid having health problems when it is very hot or cold? How important is it to keep hydrated. When it is so hot we lose more than just sweat, but we also loose electrolytes. that is were we can get into trouble. You need to drink more than just water. Drink something like Gatorade or one of the sport drinks that have electrolytes to keep your bodies systems in balance. As we get older, things like heat, cold and sun affect us more. So keep up on health information about how to avoid trouble when you are in adverse or extreme weather conditions. Keep safe when riding and have a good month.

ASSISTANT ILLINOIS DISTRICT DIRECTORS —STEVEN & DIANE GOTTSCHALK

Greeting from Southern Illinois, Did you miss the Illinois District Rally this past weekend? BIG mistake, we had the best time ever! First we want to thank the City of Pontiac for sharing their hearts and camaraderie with our GWRRA family, what an outstanding job they did, what an outstanding community they have. Everyone gave support to our Members Steven and Diane Gottschalk and the District Team in every aspect of this Rally. Thank you from the bottom Assistant Director, IL District of our heart! Region E MEC Coordinators Second, we want to thank everyone that did video’s and pictures throughout the weekend and shared them on face book, you’re all awesome and did an outstanding job of showing the fun we all had! Thursday afternoon kickoff started at the Eagle Performing Arts & Conference Center with registration, games and catching up with our GWRRA family. At 5pm opening ceremonies began with the Mayor of Pontiac telling some of the highlights of their city. The District team then happily served our members an appreciation dinner of taco’s in a bag, homemade pie’s (Chocolate, Banana, Strawberry, Coconut, Apple, Butterscotch) from the Filling Station Restaurant and DQ ice cream (provided for free by their local Dairy Queen) and toppings provided by the District Team. Shortly after the meal concluded a Chinese Auction was done, to “Throw a cream pie in the face of our esteemed Director Mary Adams”. Bob Fowkes won this privilege but Mary got her revenge by returning the pie to Bob’s face. We then lined up for our beautiful evening sunset and bug run ride, where there were about 35 bikes riding in two groups. What a beginning to our District Rally and my favorite summer rally by far! Friday and Saturday festivities were held at the Pontiac Community Center where we had seminars, games, rides and more fraternizing with friends. A big thank you to Dave and Sandy Ginger for all the work they did on the games for our rally-game participation was high. This year we decided to do the on bike games as a Chapter Challenge, it didn’t work out as well as we hoped due to the extreme hot weather. We re-evaluated the situation and decided to bring them inside, the games not the motorcycles, and did them as team challenges. We ended up with 7 teams and 6 people per team; it started off a bit difficult but ended up a lot of fun and team spirit. Closing ceremonies took place back at the Eagle Performing Arts and Conference Center where we had another meal of pizza, nachos, salad, homemade pies and DQ ice cream (again provided by The Filling Station Restaurant and Dairy Queen). Yum! Yum! I can’t end this article without talking about the dinner theater that was also given for free by the performing arts community. It was so much fun; they had everyone participating from singing and dancing in the audience to members participating on stage; Sonny Gales, Carol Buzick, Tony Lasher, Lanny Anderson, Dave Bennett and Shirley Schmidt participated to the song “Car Wash”.
