With August being National Women’s Month, Brighton Beach SAPS felt it necessary to do something to celebrate women, especially elderly women in the community. Brighton Beach SAPS corporate communications officer and project manager of this initiative, Cpt Louise Le Roux, launched the station’s opera- tional activities through the distribution of safety and wellness care packs for elderly women who were visiting the mall. On Saturday, August 1, foot patrols were con- ducted at the Hill Side Mall in Bluff with the aim of campaigning for the safety of elderly women in public spaces. The care packs consisted of an educational brochure, written in both IsiZulu and English, which was researched and compiled by Cpt Le Roux. “The brochure focused on raising aware- ness on how to reduce criminal acts being im- posed upon elderly women. Since the beginning of the lockdown, the team of instructors at the National Sea Rescue In- stitute (NSRI) have not been able to go out and conduct their teachings on water safety but they are doing everything they can to ensure that they still get their message across. This is done through social media and interviews so they can reach as many people as possible. As a water safety instructor, Siyabonga Mthethwa, visits schools, clinics and organi- sations around Durban to educate them on water safety. He teaches people from as young as four-years-old up to adults. “About 600 children die by drowning in South Africa a year. More than half of drownings of children under five occur in or near the home. This is usually the case with swimming pools, dams, lakes and rivers. The alcohol industry welcomed the call by the South African Medical Research Council (SAMRC) for government to start preparing for the lifting of the ban on the formal sale of alcohol. The decision recognises that there was no immediate severe pressure on hospi- tal beds set aside for the treatment of COVID-19 patients. The call was made by SAMRC presi- dent, Dr Glenda Gray and Prof Charles Parry, director of Alcohol, Tobacco and other Drugs Research Unit of the SAMRC during an interview with Michael Avery of Business Day TV on Friday, July 31. Dr Gray and Prof Parry acknowledged that the anticipated excessive pressure on hospitals as a result of a surge in COVID-19 infection was not materialis- ing.
