Smith, Ph.D. University of Nevada, Las Vegas May 1996 ABSTRACT The purpose of this study is to investigate what effect the evolution of a social movement has on the depth of broadcast news coverage. By focusing on the American Indian take-over of Alcatraz Island 1969-71, this study examines whether a television news story has a life cycle of its own which contributes and/or detracts from the life cycle of a social movement. The Alcatraz occupation was selected because it was the first aggressive and prolonged act of Indian protest in the United States. The foundation for this thesis rests upon the idea that the "lead story" to a television newscast revolves around the philosophy "Win the Lead!". This premise is then balanced against Stewart, Smith and Denton's (1989) definition for the life cycle of a social movement which asserts that a social movement has a life cycle which consists of 5 stages: genesis, social unrest, mobilization, maintenance and termination. CHAPTER 1 INTRODUCTION Television occupies a large role in American society; no one is immune to its effects. Without question, "Television is the medium with the greatest potential for transmitting information and beliefs from one group to another"(Dominick,1994,p.512). Those of us who grew up during the 1960's can most certainly recall the vivid imagery of television news. Inthel960's and 1970's, television news covered protests and demonstrations. "With success, the demonstration grew, the coverage increased, and the Revolution spun on with frenzied momentum"(Small, 1970p.42) and the momentum included Black Power, student unrest, political upheaval and dissent against the Vietnam War. It was television news that gave Americans a view of the American soldier which excluded insight into their horror. It was television news which graphically showed Americans the horror of the murder of four college students at Kent State University. It was also television news which forced Americans to re-evaluate their relationships, conceptions and images of ethnic and minority groups, and it was television news which visually, for the first time, dramatized the plight of American Indians and their struggle to keep their culture alive and change the mythical image and squalid living conditions in which most were forced to live. In the last 20 years, numerous diverse, and often contradictory, studies have been conducted regarding social movements; however, there is very little information regarding television news and its role in the life cycle of a social movement. The purpose of this study, therefore, is to investigate what effect the evolution of a social movement has on the depth of

American Indian Occupation of Alcatraz BREAKING POINT: The 1969 American Indian Occupation of Alcatraz Island Thomas Kahle, Coe College Introduction On November 10, 1969, a young Mohawk Indian named Richard Oakes stood thronged by San Francisco news reporters and television cameras. The location of this media frenzy was the then-abandoned Alcatraz Island, and Oakes, a tall, dark-haired twenty-seven-year-old was pressed against the side of a pick-up truck answering reporters’ questions. “So what’s this ‘nation’ that you want to establish out here?” was the first question audible over the crowd’s ruckus.1 Oakes replied, “An Indian nation.”2 The next inquiry, “[Well] why Alcatraz?” was received with equal brevity, as Oakes, struggling to contain his confidence, subtly grinned as he remarked: “Because everyone can see it.”3 Then, while answering another question concerning the soon-to-be- built “Indian nation,” Oakes found himself interrupted by one of the reporters: “Mr. Oakes, this is Mr. Hannon from the General Services Administration (GSA).”4 Recognizing the significance of the crowd’s newest and rather serious-looking member, Oakes exclaimed: “Mr.

    California on the Ballot White Paper 2020-21 Written by Chelsea Davis In the political experiment that is the American republic, California may be the most visible laboratory. What does the electoral history of a state often considered to be the seat of the nation’s social, technological, and cultural innovation have to tell us about the future of American democracy, and its complex past? California Humanities set out to spark ongoing conversations on these topics through its California on the Ballot program, funded by the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation’s “Why it Matters: Civic and Electoral Participation” initiative, administered by the Federation of State Humanities Councils. Taking place from October 2020 to April 2021, California on the Ballot overlapped with both a tumultuous presidential election and a controversial national census. The seven events of the series—all of them made free, public, and online due to the global COVID pandemic—invited audiences and expert guests to reflect on what civic engagement currently looks like in California, and what changes might soon be in store. Scholars, artists, journalists, civil servants, and archivists offered their perspectives through Zoom panel discussions, interviews, displays of historical artifacts, film clips, and Q&A sessions with viewers. The conversations tackled subjects ranging in geographical scope from the national (the Electoral College) to the regionally specific (the 22 acres of Alcatraz Island, whose nineteen-month occupation by Indians of All Tribes was the topic of California Dreamin’); from the centuries-long history of voting in California (Show and Tell; What’s the Deal with Direct Democracy?) to the future of the electorate (Youth and the Ballot); from the role that demographics play in our elections (Voter Turnout) to the proper place of the media in them (The Fourth Branch).

Confronted with racism from the dominant society and sexism from both within and outside of their communities, these women constructed a feminist agenda that addressed their concerns as Indians and women. In particular, they worked to end coerced sterilization and the rampant removal of Indian children from their communities and homes. Building on new scholarship that has argued the struggle for reproductive freedom included the right to bear children as well as prevent births, ‘We Worry About Survival’ looks at the crucial role Indian women played in arresting sterilization abuse and defining American women’s struggle for reproductive justice. At the same time that Indian women’s activism to end coerced sterilization informed the goals of the feminist movement, their activism to reform adoption and foster care processes shaped the meaning of tribal sovereignty in the late twentieth century.

She conveyed in her own narrative a rich mastery for the power and emotion of storytelling. Beyond her many stories my Grandmother was a remarkable woman, a matriarch who held her family together with minimal resources through some of the toughest of times.

    ALCATRAZ IS NOT AN ISLAND: RECOVERING THEMES OF PAN-INDIANISM FROM NEWS ACCOUNTS OF THE 1969-71 OCCUPATION by SHERRI LYNN MCLENDON (Under the Direction of Ruth Ann Weaver Lariscy) ABSTRACT This paper considers news of the 1969-71 occupation of Alcatraz Island reprinted in Akwesasne Notes, the far-left New York-based Mohawk publication. Previously, media studies of the occupation consider it as a dramatic pseudo-event. However, speech communications studies suggest a consummatory perspective that honors the Native American view of the occupation as a critical event. This study illuminates the struggle for cultural survival and self-determination by Native Americans in the 20th century at its "watershed" moment. For the first time, this bounded case study applies the themes of pan-Indianism that are known to exist to the study of news. The study employs a content- analytic framework to identify the characteristics of the themes of self-determination, de- colonization, transformation, mobilization, healing, survival, recovery and development. This story is told through interviews with more than 130 Indigenous activists from 29 Native nations who demonstrate the enduring and coherent nature of Indigenous resistance. I contend that the cultural matrix of Indigenous peoples serves as an abeyance organization to produce recurring activism that conforms to a coherent Indigenous worldview. This worldview produces movements which consistently prioritize protecting the land, centering spiritual principles, fostering community and featuring vital participation by women. From the Ghost Dance ceremonies of the 1800s to the Water Protectors at Standing Rock, Indigenous peoples have resisted the dominant western paradigms. They have fought for a worldview that is not compatible with the white patriarchal domination of people and nature. This research illuminates an Indigenous worldview. What appears as an Indigenous “rhetoric of survivance” is actually deeply linked to a cultural, political and social epistemology with foundational and organic concepts like time, kinship structures and reciprocity – with concomitant “sacred civics” of “blood and responsibility” and a unique cosmology held in memory and trafficked orally. Through annals and volumes of academic research across disciplines and cultures not only American Indians, but Indigenous peoples in general, remain marginalized.
