  • Australia ‒ a Travel Report by Patrick Klich
Australia ‒ A Travel Report by Patrick Klich Spending 10 months in Australia as a student at the Australian National University may be one of the best things you are ever going to do. Great adventures are waiting. For me it was a time of studying hard, socializing a lot and meeting many people from different cultures (hey – I got a Chinese name: Xiongxiong, which means something like “Little bear”), doing a lot of sports and thus losing weight (running, running and more running – hint: IB), learning about the country and learning more about myself. First I am going to explain why I wanted to study at the ANU. Second I am going to say something about Australia, Canberra, the Australian National University and the Australian culture. Then I am going to say something about getting ready for Australia. I will include some useful hints about “living in Canberra”. I felt the need to go somewhere far away for a long time in order totry something new, something different, something challenging before attending the course “Australian Culture”. Since Australia is so far away and I almost did not know anything about the continent, I was ready and eager to learn more about Australia. At some point, Ms. McIlwaine mentioned that one student will get the opportunity to study at the Australian National University in Canberra. Improving and perfecting my English, studying at a foreign “elite” University, meeting new people, learning about the Australian Culture were some of the goals I wanted to accomplish. Australia Australia has beautiful landscapes, unique animals, a superb climate, tasty food and much more.

  • May 2020 Published by the Australian Timetable Association
TABLE TALK AUSTRALASIAN TIMETABLE NEWS No. 333, May 2020 Published by the Australian Timetable Association RAIL & TRAM NEWS NATIONAL Rail freight surges to re-stock shops The rush to refill supermarket shelves following the coronavirus panic-buying pushed up interstate rail haulage by as much as 15 per cent, according to Pacific National (PN). PN's boss, Dean Dalla Valle, said that PN had been playing catch-up with additional runs across the Nullarbor and along the East Coast to cope with the unseasonal demand. More the 60 per cent of goods imported into Western Australia come by rail, according to Mr Dalla Valle, and PN increased its services in the state by 15 per cent in the lead-up to the Easter weekend, with fresh fruit and vegetables from WA market gardens making up much of the return trade. Demand coming into Easter long weekend had increased its runs across the Nullarbor to more than 40 a week between Melbourne and Perth, while services to Brisbane had lifted by close to 10 per cent. He also said that while consumer goods had driven the surge in additional services, bulk coal and grain services were holding up well, but it was impossible to predict if freight and coal volumes would hold up in coming months. A double-stacked train across the Nullarbor can be as long as 1.8km and haul more than 330 shipping containers. Each container can hold 25,000 rolls of toilet paper, 1,500 cases of beer or 65,000 Easter chocolate bunnies. Aurizon and partner Linfox have also reported that freight deliveries into regional Queensland had lifted more than 20 per cent after the coronavirus outbreak.

  • News Release
News Release Allison provides passenger-focused value for Murrays Leading Australian coach charter operator, Murrays, has chosen primarily Allison-equipped models to ensure safety, passenger comfort and lower operational costs. SYDNEY, Australia – One of Australia’s largest coach operators has committed to Allison fully automatic transmissions for 124 coaches within its 180-vehicle fleet, to deliver a safe, comfortable and efficient passenger experience. Murrays operates from its Gold Coast, Sydney, Canberra and Melbourne depots. Allison’s 1000 Series™ transmissions are fitted to Murrays’ 7.6-meter, Cummins ISF powered, Higer small deluxe coaches, while its larger BCI 12- and 14.5-meter deluxe coaches come fitted with Cummins’ ISL and ISM motors, mated with either an Allison T390R or T450R transmission. According to Murrays’ national fleet manager, Justin Cannon, Allison-equipped models are a safer, more passenger-friendly option. “Allison automatics reduce driver fatigue, because drivers don’t have to constantly change gears, making it safer and smoother, which enhances the passenger experience.” As well as a smoother ride, Load Based Shift Scheduling (LBSS) and hydraulic retarders deliver significant reductions in both fuel and maintenance costs for Murrays. LBSS automatically selects between economy and performance modes based on a vehicle's payload and the grade on which it is operating, allowing for optimal shift strategies. The hydraulic retarder reduces wear and tear, prolonging brake life. “Allison’s LBSS feature has reduced our fuel consumption, and the integrated retarder in the Allison transmissions we use in larger BCI coaches significantly reduces the rate of wear on the brakes, while enhancing passenger safety – and that’s one of our key priorities,” said Cannon.
