A graphic which illustrates there are only 5 federal electorates that have more than 5000 Koalas (Maranoa, Mayo, Corangamite, Indi, Wannon), and 41 electorates where Koalas are now extinct. The document is written and ready to go. The AKF commissioned barristers and others to write the Koala Protection Act. It has been signed off by a retired professor of law who understands the limitations of the EPBC Act. It has been written with fairness in mind, and puts the onus directly on the proponent to prove their activity is benign before construction can occur. 3.. -3- The Koala Protection Act will ensure: • There is no room for “take”, which is a nice word for “kill”. • There is no room for “controlled actions” which allows destruction on sites masquerading as environment work. • And finally, there are third party rights for the community to call rogue developments to account. Many environmental organisations, as well as Labor and the Greens want new environmental legislation including an Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) type approach to the protection of the environment. The AKF supports this concept, but we do not believe the Koala has the time for such an approach. It is our view that unless the protection of their habitat is enacted quickly, then the fate of the Koala is bleak and well, possibly in your hands. The Koala Protection Act is modelled on the Bald Eagle Act (US) which works perfectly well with an EPA in that country, provided there is no political interventions. Coroners Court of Victoria 071109 Joan Ambrose (PDF 1MB) The inquest into the death of Joan Ambrose was to determine if Noble Manor, the aged care facility of which Mrs Ambrose was a resident, had contributed to her death. Joan Ambrose died on 7 February 2009. On the day in question Joan Ambrose wandered outside into a secure courtyard. She was found three hours later. The State of Victoria was suffering from an extreme heat wave at the time and State and Federal Agencies as well as the Premier of Victoria had issued warnings and advice to aged care facilities regarding resident care. These included monitoring the whereabouts of residents, especially if they had access to outdoor areas such as courtyards. The Coroner considered the issues surrounding the door through which Mrs Ambrose exited and the new staffing arrangement which had been implemented that day. At the time of Mrs Ambrose's death all doors were locked from the outside and couldn't be opened unless someone gave access from inside. New staffing arrangements which came into place on 7 February saw only three, instead of three, personal care assistants on duty between 1 and 3 pm. The Coroner found that Mrs Ambrose died as a result of ischaemic heart disease and heat exposure in a setting of underlying cerebro-vascular disease following her exit into the courtyard. The Coroner also found that failure to make appropriate plans to protect residents and the change to staffing arrangements contributed to Mrs Ambrose's death. The Coroner recommended that aged care facilities be required to have emergency management plans to control exit/entry points to prevent the unsupervised departure of residents during heat waves and to include appropriate staffing levels in the plans.

Courtesy ABC News 24. It is only natural that the vultures will grow hungry again soon. They have become accustomed to kings becoming carrion. In the past 20 years Paul Keating, Kim Beazley, Simon Crean, Mark Latham, Beazley again, John Howard, Brendan Nelson, Malcolm Turnbull, Kevin Rudd, Julia Gillard, Rudd again, and now Tony Abbott have all been felled, a procession of change, on average, every 20 months, for 20 years. It shows no sign of slowing. In this context, the Canning by-election could have been called the Cunning by- election. It gave a clear, vindicating victory for Malcolm Turnbull's brazen, lightning coup. So now the vultures will soon be hovering over the obvious loser, Bill Shorten, who made a serious blunder last week that puts him on carrion watch. Having hovered over Abbott for months, the vultures will be riding the political thermals and circling in the sky, watching for Shorten to falter. He just became much more vulnerable. He has never been popular in the opinion polls. He has rarely been impressive in parliament. He was especially unimpressive in the three sitting days leading up to the Canning by-election.     Tweeting to Save the Furniture: The 2013 Australian Election Campaign on Twitter Introduction Past years have seen continuing experimentation around the world in the use of online publishing and engagement technologies for political campaigning (Bruns et al., 2016). Australia, with its exceptionally short legislative periods of (nominally) three years at federal level, provides a particularly useful environment in which the transition towards increased online campaigning can be observed. This also traces the changing mix amongst the digital platforms: the online campaign of the 2007 federal election was overshadowed by the “blog wars” between conservative and progressive commentators over the correct interpretation of opinion poll results (Jericho, 2012; Bruns & Highfield, 2012), and the major parties also experimented with online videos posted to YouTube, with varying success (Bruns et al., 2007), but Facebook and Twitter did not yet feature in any significant way. By 2010, blog-style columns had been incorporated into mainstream online news platforms from The Australian to Crikey, and no longer played a distinct role in the campaign. Instead, following the widespread adoption of Facebook and (less strongly so) Twitter, and the role that such tools played in covering the Rudd/Gillard leadership spill earlier in the year (Posetti, 2010; Bruns & Burgess, 2015), parties, candidates, journalists, and commentators began to incorporate social media more fully into their campaigning activities (cf. Grant et al., 2010). However, in spite of the significant journalistic and scholarly attention paid to these developments, the still distinctively netizen- dominated userbase demographics of a platform such as Twitter also resulted in social media debates about the election that focussed largely on technology topics such as the proposed National Broadband Network and Internet filter.

    Ministers desert PM Exclusive Peter Hartcher Mark Kenny The Age 19 March 2013 Senior ministers in the Gillard government are reconsidering their support for the Prime Minister – a sign of collapsing confidence at a critical time. Cabinet minister Mark Butler, a key figure in the Labor Left faction, has told colleagues that he is reconsidering his support for Julia Gillard. And an important member of the Labor Right faction, Foreign Affairs Minister Bob Carr, has told colleagues that he lost confidence in Ms Gillard some time ago. Both cabinet ministers were considered firm supporters of Ms Gillard against former Prime Minister Kevin Rudd. Their changing positions are a sign of a loss of confidence in Ms Gillard within the government, and evidence of a gathering momentum to restore Mr Rudd to the leadership. Both ministers are understood to have developed grave doubts about the Prime Minister’s political judgment and her ability to campaign. Mr Butler is the Minister for Mental Health and Ageing and a member of the ALP national executive. He supported Ms Gillard for the leadership when Mr Rudd challenged last year. He is considered to carry with him the votes of three or four other caucus members, in the factional and tribal way of the Labor Party. He is the leader of the South Australian Left. It is understood that Mr Butler doubts Ms Gillard’s ability to lead the party to victory at the September 14 election, and fears the consequences of an Abbott government. Labor, which failed to win a majority of seats at the 2010 election, has never been ina winning position in Fairfax Media’s Nielsen poll since that election.
