  • The Effectiveness of CEO Leadership Styles in the Technology Industry
The Effectiveness of CEO Leadership Styles in the Technology Industry Sean Dougherty, Andrew Drake Advisors: Dr. Jonathan Scott and Professor Katherine Nelson Temple University Explanation of research The purpose of this research is to determine the impact of leadership style on financial success. A great deal of research has been done on the factors that affect the financial success of a company, but leadership is one factor that tends to be overlooked. That is due to the nature of leadership; like other aspects of human resources management such as company culture, leadership is not easily quantifiable. In order to study leadership’s effect on company success, we needed to make leadership less abstract and more concrete. We needed a means of distinguishing the way one person leads in comparison to another person, and the solution was presented to us upon reading Primal Leadership. Authors Daniel Goleman, Richard Boyatzis, and Annie McKee make the detailed claim that the way a person leads can always be categorized into at least one of six distinct emotional leadership styles. We seek to build on the research of Goleman, Boyatzis, and McKee by analyzing the effectiveness of each of these styles in terms of driving financial success. To measure financial success, we looked at the behavior of stock price in the time following an initial public offering. For our data set, we chose to study 60 companies in the technology industry that have gone public since the year 2000. With each company, we researched the CEO who led the company during the IPO and assigned him or her one to two leadership styles that he or she exhibits.

  • Growing Pains at Groupon
ISSUES IN ACCOUNTING EDUCATION American Accounting Association Vol. 29, No. 1 DOI: 10.2308/iace-50595 2014 pp. 229–245 Growing Pains at Groupon Saurav K. Dutta, Dennis H. Caplan, and David J. Marcinko ABSTRACT: On November 4, 2011, Groupon Inc. went public with an initial market capitalization of $13 billion. The business was formed a couple of years earlier as an offshoot of ‘‘The Point.’’ The business grew rapidly and increased its reported revenue from $14.5 million in 2009 to $1.6 billion in 2011. Soon after going public, prior to its announcement of its first-quarter results, the company’s auditors required Groupon to disclose a material weakness in its internal controls over financial reporting that impacted its disclosures on revenue and its estimation of returns. This case uses Groupon to motivate discussion of financial reporting issues in e- commerce businesses. Specifically, the case focuses on (1) revenue recognition practices for ‘‘agency’’ type e-commerce businesses, (2) accounting for sales with a right of return for new products, and (3) use of alternative financial metrics to better convey the intrinsic value of a business. The case requires students to critically read, analyze, and apply authoritative accounting guidance, and to read and analyze communications between the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) and the registrant. Keywords: Groupon; revenue recognition; allowance for sales returns; e-commerce; non-GAAP metrics. GROWING PAINS AT GROUPON s an undergraduate music major at Northwestern University, Andrew Mason eagerly sought a version of rock music that would fuse punk with the Beatles and Cat Stevens.

  • Groupon Goes Public: Communication Strategy and Challenges
Groupon Goes Public: Communication Strategy and Challenges “Groupon, a local e-commerce marketplace that connects merchants and consumers by offering goods and services at a discount, today announced that it has filed a registration statement on Form S-1 with the Securities and Exchange Commission for a proposed initial public offering of its Class A common stock.”1 With these words at the top of its press release, Groupon announced to the financial markets on June 2, 2011 that it was planning an initial public offering (IPO). Its filings with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) indicated that Groupon was looking to sell about a 5% stake in the company to public shareholders for $750 million to $1 billion. This price implied a $20 billion for the company as a whole.2 The investment community had watched a parade of internet companies go public in the first half of 2011, and Groupon – along with other high-growth, web-based companies like Zynga and Facebook – were widely expected to be the next to come to market. Some analysts, like eMarketer’s Jeffrey Grau, were excited by Groupon’s market position in an area with such explosively high growth: “Although there are risks involved in daily deals and challenges for these companies, local commerce is a huge untapped market... It's very competitive and not all companies will make it, but there's a lot of money to be made.” 3 However, given that the company showed little hope for profitability in the near term, some analysts, including Sucharita Mulpuru at Forrester, were more skeptical that Groupon was an attractive investment: “There is no rational math that could possibly get anyone to the valuation Groupon thinks it deserves.

  • 125Th Anniversary Dinner Celebrates National Louis University's
125th Anniversary Dinner Celebrates National Louis University’s History as Education Pioneer National Louis presents inaugural Pioneer Awards to Andrew Mason and Martin J. (Mike) and Patricia Koldyke and announces $1.75 million in major gifts January 20, 2012 (Chicago, IL) – National Louis University held its 125th Anniversary Dinner yesterday in celebration of the institution’s history of providing educational access to individuals who otherwise might not have had the opportunity, including adult, immigrant and minority populations. At the event, chaired by Elizabeth and Jeff Louis and Diana and Bruce Rauner, and held at a private club in Chicago, the first Pioneer Awards were presented to Andrew Mason, and Martin J. (Mike) and Patricia Koldyke. The university also announced three major gifts of nearly $1.75 million, recognizing the university’s history of educational excellence. Urban education pioneer and community activist Elizabeth Harrison, founded National Louis based on the then-revolutionary idea to create a college to train women to teach very young children and thus improve prospects for entire families and neighborhoods. She believed in the value of education as “preparation for life.” In this spirit, Dr. Nivine Megahed, president of National Louis University, awarded the first annual Pioneer Awards to Mr. Mason and Mr. and Mrs. Koldyke because they have exhibited exceptional character and a sense of higher purpose in their lives and work; thereby increasing opportunity and quality of life for others. These reflect the core values of Harrison, as well as the university. At the 125th anniversary celebration, National Louis also announced three major gifts from the Robert R.
