The First Sunday A Service of Advent Lessons and Carols and Holy Eucharist St. Mary’s Episcopal Church Park Ridge, IL Second Sunday of Advent December 7, 2014 10:00 A.M. Advent Lessons and Carols You are invited to use the quiet time before the service to focus your body, mind and spirit in prayer. As silence is kept, the candles will be lighted. Please stand as you are able when the tower bell tolls. *The Congregation is invited to stand as you are able. *Matin Responsory adapted from Giovanni Pierluigi da Palestrina (c. 1526-1594) I look from afar: and lo, I see the power of God coming, and a cloud covering the whole earth. Go ye out to meet him and say: Tell us, art thou he that should come to reign over the people Israel? High and low, rich and poor, one with another, Go ye out to meet him and say: Hear, O thou Shepherd of Israel, thou that leadest Joseph like sheep, Tell us, art thou he that should come? Stir up thy strength, O Lord, and come to reign over thy people Israel. Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost. I look from afar: and lo, I see the power of God coming, and a cloud cov’ring the whole earth. Go ye out to meet him and say: Tell us, art thou he that should come to reign over thy people Israel? Cantor – Matt Grove; Baritone soloist – Alex Novello Treble soloists – Ella Sciortino & Eliza Bowe 2 Procession into Worship Come, thou Redeemer of the earth. Puer nobis 3 One: Beloved in Christ, in this season of Advent, let it be our care and delight to prepare ourselves to hear again the message of the Angels, and in heart and mind to go even unto Bethlehem, to see the Babe lying in a manger. Let us read and mark in Holy Scripture the tale of the loving purposes of God, the glorious Redemption brought us by God’s holy Child. Let us look forward to the yearly remembrance of his birth with hymns and songs of praise. But first, let us pray for the needs of the whole world; for peace and goodwill over all the earth; for the mission and unity of the Church for which he died, and especially in this country and within this city. And because this of all things would rejoice his heart, let us at this time remember in his name the poor and the helpless; the hungry and the oppressed; the sick and those who mourn; the lonely and the unloved; the aged and the little children; and all those who know not the Lord Jesus, or who love him not, or who by sin have grieved his heart of love. Lastly, let us remember before God all those who rejoice with us, but upon another shore and in a greater light, that multitude which no one can number, whose hope was in the Word made flesh, and with whom, in our Lord Jesus, we for evermore are one. One: The Almighty God bless us with his grace and may Christ Jesus give us the joys of everlasting life. Amen. The candles are extinguished and all are seated. The First Lesson Isaiah 11: 1-9 The Spirit of the Lord will rest upon the Holy One. Read by Susan O’Grady *Hymn 68 Rejoice! Rejoice, believers… Llangloffan The Second Lesson Isaiah 40: 1-11 The Prophet proclaims good news to a people in exile. Read by Angela Carlson 4 Carol Prepare the way, O Zion… Anders Öhrwall (1932-2012) Prepare the way, O Zion; your Christ is drawing near! Let every hill and valley a level way appear. Greet One who comes in glory, foretold in sacred story. Oh, blest is Christ that came in God’s most holy name. He brings God’s rule, O Zion; He comes from heaven above. His rule is peace and freedom, and justice, truth, and love. Lift high your praise resounding, for grace and joy abounding. Oh, blest is Christ that came in God’s most holy name. Fling wide your gates, O Zion; your Savior’s rule embrace. His tidings of salvation proclaim in every place. All lands will bow before him, their voices will adore him. Oh, blest is Christ that came in God’s most holy name. The Third Lesson Isaiah 7:10-15 God promises that a child shall be conceived who will be known as “God with us.” Read by Amy Crawford Carol Come, Thou Long-Expected Jesus Richard Webster (b. circa 1951) Text: Charles Wesley Come, thou long-expected Jesus, born to set thy people free; from our fears and sins release us, let us find our rest in thee. Israel's strength and consolation, hope of all the earth thou art: clear desire of ev'ry nation, joy of ev'ry longing heart. Born thy people to deliver, born a child, and yet a king, born to reign in us for ever, now thy gracious kingdom bring. By thine own eternal Spirit rule in all our hearts alone; by thine all sufficient merit raise us to thy glorious throne. Alleluia! The Fourth Lesson Luke 1:26-38 The angel Gabriel salutes the Blessed Virgin Mary. Read by Christina Heyde Carol Gabriel’s Message Basque Carol Setting by Philip Orem (b. 1959) The angel Gabriel from heaven came, his wings as drifted snow, his eyes as flame; “All hail,” said he, “thou lowly maiden Mary, most highly favored lady.” Gloria! “For know a blessed Mother you will be, all generations praise and honor thee, your Son will be Emmanuel, by seers foretold, most highly favored lady.” Gloria! Then gentle Mary meekly bowed her head, “To me be as it pleaseth God,” she said, “my soul will praise and magnify His holy Name.” Most highly favored lady.” Gloria! Of her, Emmanuel, the Christ, was born in Bethlehem, all on a Christmas morn, And Christian folk throughout the world will ever say “Most highly favored lady.” Gloria! Adrienne Grove - soprano 5 The Fifth Lesson Matthew 1: 18-23 St. Matthew tells of the coming birth of the Saviour.. Read by John Heyde Carol Tomorrow shall be my dancing day… John Gardner (1917-2011) Tomorrow shall be my dancing day: I would my true love did so chance to see the legend of my play, to call my true love to my dance: Sing O my love; this have I done for my true love. Then was I born of a virgin pure, of her I took fleshly substance; thus was I knit to man’s nature, to call my true love to my dance: Sing O my love; this have I done for my true love. In a manger laid and wrapped I was, so very poor this was my chance, betwixt an ox and a silly poor ass, to call my true love to my dance: Sing O my love; this have I done for my true love. Then afterwards baptized I was: the Holy Ghost on me did glance, my Father's voice heard from above, to call my true love to my dance: Sing O my love; this have I done for my true love. The Sixth Lesson Mark 1:1-5 Jesus is baptized by John and proclaims the coming of the kingdom of God. Read by The Rev. The Great Thanksgiving Please Stand One: The Lord be with you All: And also with you One: Lift up your hearts All: We lift them to the Lord One: Let us give thanks to the Lord our God All: It is right to give God thanks and praise 6 One: It is right, and a good and joyful thing, always and everywhere to give thanks to you, Father Almighty, Creator of heaven and earth. Because you sent your beloved Son to redeem us from sin and death, and to make us heirs in him of everlasting life; that when he shall come again in power and great triumph to judge the world, we may without shame or fear rejoice to behold his appearing. Therefore we praise you, joining our voices with Angels and Archangels and with all the company of heaven, who forever sing this hymn to proclaim the glory of your Name: Sanctus William Bradley Roberts Music continues on next page → 7 Presentation One: We give thanks to you, O God, for the goodness and love which you have made known to us in creation; in the calling of Israel to be your people; in your Word spoken through the prophets; and above all in the Word made flesh, Jesus, your Son. For in these last days you sent him to be incarnate from the Virgin Mary, to be the Savior and Redeemer of the world.

He was the author of some 175 theological and controversial works, in German and Latin, perhaps the most important being his Institutio Religionis Christianae , Frankfurt, 1572-73. He also ranks, with Helmbold and Ringwaldt, among the most important hymnwriters of the period. Amid the manifold changes and chances of his life he found inspiration and consolation in the study of and recourse to the Psalter, and in his love of music….His German hymns partake for the most part of the objective churchly character of the hymns of the Reformation period, and indeed contain many reminiscences of them.

  • The Life and Music of William Lloyd Webber John France
The Life and Music of William Lloyd Webber John France The purpose of this essay is threefold: firstly, to present a brief biographical introduction of William Lloyd Webber, secondly, to give an overview of the literature concerning the composer and thirdly, a selective ‘reception history’ of his music on CD and in the concert hall. The essay concludes with a short discography. ILLIAM SOUTHCOMBE LLOYD WEBBER was born into a respectable, but W relatively poor, family at 274 King's Road, Chelsea, London, on 11 March 1914. His father, William, was a self-employed plumber whose favourite recreation was visiting as many church and civic organs as his leisure and finances would permit. William was soon accompanying his father on these trips. At a young age he was playing the piano and organ, giving recitals and even broadcasting on the nascent BBC. After winning an organ scholarship to Mercers School in Holborn, Lloyd Webber went up to the Royal College of Music on a Sir John Goss Scholarship. There he had composition lessons with Vaughan Williams and studied organ under Dr Henry Ley. He was to gain his BMus and his Fellowship of the Royal College of Organists in 1933, aged nineteen. In 1938 he was awarded his DMus from the London College of Music. It was around this time that Lloyd Webber began to compose. His first performed work was a Violin Sonatina, now lost. The earliest surviving work is the Fantasy Trio (1936), possibly composed for the well-known Cobbett chamber music prize. This trio pushed (in places) beyond the notion of English Pastoralism towards the more astringent harmonies of Frank Bridge’s later music and the soundscape of Alban Berg.
