Study ‘not relevant to project’

Reader response to letter ‘Synthetic greens pose potential health issues.’ WW December 9 , p 4.

Please find the link below to the DSR website covering health concerns for natural v synthetic grasses which was quoted in the letter by Rebekka Wake in the latest edition of the weekly. www.dsr.wa.gov.au/sport-and- advice/facility-management/developing-facilities/natural-grass- vs-synthetic-turf-study-report/health-impact You will see that there is no reference to golf anywhere in it. Therefore we feel that it was a very long bow to draw and not relevant to our project. At no time has she, or anyone from Turf Australia contacted the club to establish what product we are installing. To assume that it is the same as that which was tested in 2002 on an American hockey field makes it damaging in it's ignorance. There is very little sweat and even less blood spilt in a game of golf! As editor of the local newspaper, we think you have a responsibility to avert the possible damage that can be done by publishing such letters without checking the relevance of them first. The club has nothing to hide or gain by silencing such letters but perhaps a phone call to a club representative may prevent an ongoing debate on the pages of the weekly in the future. If anyone would like to know more details on the project, they can contact the club or myself directly. The club is trying to provide something unique to Walpole to entice more visitors to the area and unnecessary negativity is not helpful. Whilst it will have little impact on the people of Walpole, in this era of online reporting, we can't be sure how far and wide an issue such as this can reach and misconception it could create. Wayne Dumbrell, President, Walpole Country Club Note: About the ‘Letters’ section The ‘Letters’ section is an open forum to create discussion and to freely voice your opinion. Letters are not researched 'news articles' by the Weekly and the content, information and opinion expressed in them reflects solely the views of the author of the letter. ‘Litter-levy’ to remain ‘litter-free’

Reader response to letter ‘Litter-free projects supported’ WW December 2, p5.

I would like to congratulate Rodney Burton (Walpole- Nornalup Visitors Centre) and Harold Luxton (Community Development Group) for their shared continued support for Keep Australia Beautiful and the ‘litter-free’ principle. The following names are of people reported to have picked up litter in the Walpole town site and adjacent wilderness – it is a long list, in no particular order and with apologies to anyone omitted. What a performance from such a small town, it is little wonder that Walpole is the first region in Australia to have the confidence to declare itself ‘litter-free’. Unfortunately the No. 1 highway is a different proposition, carrying higher risk and even greater expense. It is not reasonable to expect other volunteers to clean 100kms of highway on a weekly basis, year in and year out. Therefore a state-wide 1c per item ‘litter-levy’ has been proposed to fund a network of contractors to clean up the ness and create a ‘litter-free’ Western Australia. One major principal party is already considering adding this proposal to their policy statement. If implemented what an honour it would be for Walpole, a region already leading the State in litter prevention. As a point of interest the idea for a 1c ‘litter levy’ originated from a Walpole business owner. —Michael Filby

Note: Mr Filby has supplied the Weekly with a list of over 60 names of people who have picked up litter. The list is deemed to lengthy for publication. In 1960 perhaps at its peak the Butter Factory won awards at the Royal Show. The district prospered as people came to join the labour force and new homes were built. Much loved Tingledale Hall vandalised at party

The much loved old Tingledale Hall was vandalised Wishing the Walpole Community last weekend at a party. Albany locals hired the hall for Merry Christmas th a 19 birthday party, which got out of control. from the Gardner family A hall committee spokesperson said that “A lot of damage was done, windows were broken, the toilets were marked with fluoro paint and graffiti, the back door was kicked in and a fire extinguisher was let off inside the kitchen.

The Big Hair Shop will be closed from lunchtime Wednesday 23 December Re-opening on Monday 4 January Hurry and book your appointment today! Phone Ivan on 9840 1777

The Pop Skip Jump pop up shop will operate from the Big Hair Shop from 30 December until 3 January.

Our original 1929 black board was punched in and broken and rubbish including broken glass was left all over the place. It took our volunteers 3 days to clean up the mess.” The spokesperson said that police were called at approximately 1.30 am by party organisers to control the party. Denmark police attended the scene. “We are not sure what will happen now, what course of action the Shire will take. Police have said that it is a civil case and it is up to the Shire to prosecute. More than the cleaning up and the damage we are saddened by the lack of respect for this old hall that everyone in our community loves and cares for.” A police spokesperson said that Parties can be declared out of control by police, in which case the organiser can be liable and prosecuted for damage costs. However it is unclear why this party was not declared to be out of control. The hall spokesperson said, “We just did what we have always done we get on with it and cleaned up the mess. We can’t wait for others to do it.” The Weekly asked for comment from the Shire of Denmark on this issue and enquired what course of action the Shire plans to take, however no response was received at the time of print.

Seasonal recipe From your Ficifolia Community Garden...

By Chris Bellanger

2015 has been a year of planning, planting, building the garden’s soil fertility and making water harvesting sustainable. This year we have concentrated on managing our human resources. Careful planning will enable us to enjoy the summer harvest with spaced picking and crops that can be value added. There will still be ‘pick your own crops’ which will be signposted. We ask that you respect the Private Plot garden markers. We really appreciate your donations. Deposit in the slot in the garden shed. These funds pay for the next season’s plants. Visiting children are currently enjoying delicious strawberries and blueberries. The gazebo signs are now up. A water bore with solar pump is installed and is producing more water than is currently being used. Plans are to develop the children’s maze. This will be an edible maze, possibly the first in any community garden. Plantings will be completed in autumn. Garden members recently had a very enjoyable, albeit smelly session pickling garlic. Pickled garlic is fantastic to eat straight from the jar, to slice into salads or use just as you do for fresh garlic. Our garlic will soon be available for sale from Aradia Blue.

Warning: it’s quite addictive! Pickled Garlic Method: garlic while still fresh (It makes peeling a breeze) Heat spiced malt vinegar. Add sugar or honey and pickling spices to your taste. Pour over garlic in clean sterilized jars. Keep refrigerated and enjoy!

‘Los Car Keys’ coming to Tingledale

Los Car Keys a musical group from Denmark who share an interest in South American music are set to hold a family friendly concert at Tingledale Hall on Saturday 16 January 2016. Peter Keelan plays the pan pipes and flutes and bombo drum, Barry Heydenrych plays guitar and charango, Marie Limondin violin and Helen Heydenrych ukulele and vocals. When asked how the group came together Peter said, “Last year Barry and Helen went on an eight month travel through South America and returned to Denmark wanting to play music from Ecuador, Peru, Bolivia and Brazil. For about two years, and every time I met Barry around town, he would ask when I was going to start playing panpipes and quena. The day I gave in to his 'pressure' was the best decision I had made for a while. Recently I had a chance meeting with a Walpole local, who said "why don't you come over our way and share some music? With a number of good friends in and around Walpole I decided that it would be lovely to play an intimate night of music, at an intimate venue. So this is how the Tingledale hall venue was chosen, as I love those old wooden country halls.” Peter promises an original music feast, “ Our music is highly charged with Latin American and African rhythms mixed with South American music, played with Denmarkian zest, style and improvisations. Please bring a ‘snack to share’ and a chair or cushion to sit on, as seats are limited.” Concert starts at 5pm,$10 entry with children under 12 years old free.
