Au cours du 20ème siècle, les liens étroits entre géologues et paléontologues des deux pays se sont maintenus, notamment par la formation de scientifiques roumains dans des universités fran- çaises et par l’usage de la langue française dans les publications en Roumanie. Les ateliers scientifiques franco-roumains consacrés au patrimoine paléontologique, soutenus par l’Ambassade de France en Roumanie, ont pu ainsi perpétuer ces rap- prochements naturels. De 2007 à 2009, les partenaires de diverses institutions rou- maines et françaises se sont réunis pour discuter sur le thème de la valorisation du patrimoine paléontologique à travers les problèmes de préservation de sites, de conservation des collections et de diffusion des connaissances. Ce présent volume constitue donc le témoignage de fructueuses discussions et échanges d’expé- riences, en prise directe avec les préoccupations du monde culturel et plus géné- ralement de la société. Une des conséquences est qu’il apparaît aujourd’hui plus que nécessaire d’affirmer que l’histoire de la vie sur Terre, qui nourrit implicitement l’idée d’évolution, peut se lire sans ambiguïté dans les témoignages qui nous sont laissés dans les sédiments anciens. Il appartient alors de bien prendre conscience de l’importance des fossiles dont la connaissance n’appartient pas seulement aux sphères scientifiques compétentes, mais également à tout citoyen à qui ce patri- moine apporte un message à intégrer dans notre culture commune. Nicolae Bălcescu 1, Bucarest, Roumanie. 1.O LA BI DIVERSITÉ, UN ENJEU SCIENTIFIQUE ET SOCIÉTAL La biodiversité occupe une place de plus en plus importante dans les préoccu- pations des scientifiques, de l’opinion publique et du monde politique. Protéger la biodiversité est devenu un impératif dont la prise de conscience est relativement récente. Chacun d’entre nous est concerné car la diversité biologique constitue une condition essentielle de l’environnement humain. Un des objectifs premiers des scientifiques est de comprendre la complexité des processus qui déterminent l’actuelle biodiversité sur Terre. Dans cette optique, les scientifiques attirent l’atten- tion sur le fait que le monde actuel se lit pour une très grande part à la lumière de son passé. Les formes de vie qui existent aujourd’hui sur la planète sont celles d’un instant; leur évolution, leur disparition, ne sont intelligibles que si on les replace dans leur très longue histoire. Pour retracer l’histoire de la biodiversité et pour l’ana- lyser il faut faire appel aux fossiles qui sont ainsi les clés de la compréhension de l’évolution de la biodiversité (Neagu, 2010). 2. LA COOPÉRATION FRANCO-ROUMAINE Dans le droit fil des liens tissés anciennement entre les scientifiques roumains et français, et dans le cadre des liens institutionnels et scientifiques réunissant depuis plusieurs années divers partenaires roumains et français, des actions communes vi- sant à valoriser le patrimoine de la mémoire de la Terre en général et de Roumanie en particulier ont été entreprises. Cette coopération a été structurée en plusieurs 7 Jean-Paul Saint Martin, Simona Saint Martin, Antoneta Seghedi, Gheorghe Oaie, Dan Grigorescu étapes. La première phase a permis la constitution d’un réseau de compétences et l’organisation à Bucarest en 2007 d’un «Atelier Scientifique franco-roumain» (Fig. 1) pour la valorisation des sites roumains remarquables et de réunions in situ (Roşcani, judeţul Hunedoara) avec des partenaires locaux. Ces actions ont réuni des collè- gues de l’Institut Géologique de Roumanie, du Musée National de Géologie, de l’Université de Bucarest, de l’Université de Cluj et du Muséum National d’Histoire Naturelle de Paris. La deuxième phase comprenait des manifestations culturelles et scientifiques dédiées aux grandes collections paléontologiques roumaines. L’objectif était de mieux faire connaître au public et aux autorités, mais aussi de faire vivre, ces inestimables trésors du patrimoine roumain. Plusieurs expositions et réunions ont concrétisé cette phase au cours de l’année 2008, avec comme point d’orgue une grande manifestation à Bucarest réunissant plusieurs

A review of studies of sexual dimorphism in the vertebrate fossil record revealed methods that were selected for use in ceratopsids. Mountain goats, bison, and pronghorn were selected as exemplar taxa for a proof of principle study that tested the selected methods, and informed and guided the investigation of sexual dimorphism in dinosaurs. Skulls of these exemplar taxa were measured in museum collections, and methods of analysing morphological variation were tested for their ability to demonstrate sexual dimorphism in their horns and horncores.

The presence of a Tetralophodon in the Neogene Nementcha formation might represent the earliest occurrence of the genus in Africa. These original fossil remains allow us to discuss the age of the Neogene part of the Nementcha formation close to the Serravalian/Tortonian boundary. ABSTRACT Anthracotheres, like many other mammals, are useful for biochronology, especially those lineages that increased in dimensions with the passage of geological time. One such lineage comprises the tetracuspidate African anthra- cotheres of the genera Afromeryx and Libycosaurus, which started out as hog-sized animals in the Early Miocene and ended up larger than hippopotami by the end of the Late Miocene. In mammal groups with few genera at any one time, such as the Neogene anthracotheres of Africa, not only can dental data yield evidence of geological age, but so can postcranial evidence. In the case of Late Neogene suids, which comprised several contemporaneous genera, dental data is useful for biochronology, but only when morphological and metric data are combined. In such groups, postcranial evidence is not as valuable because it is difficult to determine with confidence to which group such bones belong, save in the case of skeletons asso- ciated with teeth, of which there are extremely few in the African fossil record. In Africa, in contrast, anthracotheres had low diversity throughout the Neogene, with usually three or fewer taxa present at most levels older than 17.5 Ma, and only one after ca 16 Ma to the end of the Late Miocene.

    www.nature.com/scientificreports OPEN Multi-aged social behaviour based on artiodactyl tracks in an early Miocene palustrine wetland (Ebro Basin, Spain) Ignacio Díaz-Martínez1*, Oier Suarez-Hernando2, Juan Cruz Larrasoaña3,4, Blanca María Martínez-García2, Juan Ignacio Baceta2 & Xabier Murelaga2 We present a new locality with at least 880 vertebrate tracks found at the top of a limestone bed from the lower Miocene Tudela Formation (Spain). The trampled surface was formed by artiodactyls that crossed a muddy carbonate accumulated under the infuence of water level variations in a palustrine environment. The tracks refect diferent types of morphological preservation. The well-preserved tracks have tetradactyl digit impressions caused by both manus and pes, and are the type series of a new artiodactyl ichnotaxon, Fustinianapodus arriazui ichnogen. nov. and ichnosp. nov. The rest of the tracks, which are not as well preserved, are didactyl and were classifed as undetermined artiodactyl tracks. According to their preservation, morphology, size, arrangement and orientation, we propose that this tracksite is the product of a social behaviour, particularly gregariousness, of a multi-age group of artiodactyls ~19 Ma ago. The morphologic and palaeoecologic data presented here suggest that the trackmakers were a group of anthracotheres with a livelihood similar to current hippos. They crossed, periodically, a fresh water palustrine area along some preferential pathways (trails). Te Artiodactyla is a large order of placental mammals which includes pigs, peccaries, hippopotamus, cam- els, girafes, deer, cows, antelope and sheep1,2. Te oldest fossil artiodactyls are from the lower Eocene in North America, Europe and Asia, and evolved to the large land mammals of today3.

BOAZ ABSTRACT The cranial and dental anthracotheriid sample collected from As Sahabi, Libya, by the East Libya Neogene Research Project during 2007 is described. The partial skull 8P17C presents good evidence of this animal`s craniodental morphology, in particular the shape, number, relative location, and series of eruption of its 5 permanent premolars, as well as the morphology of the deciduous 3rd and 4th premolars. Two specimens collected by the Petrocchi expeditions in the 1930’s and housed in the National Museum of Libya, Tripoli are described. All anthracothere fossils from As Sahabi are assigned to Libycosaurus petrocchii (Bonarelli, 1947). ABSTRACT Anthracotheres, like many other mammals, are useful for biochronology, especially those lineages that increased in dimensions with the passage of geological time. One such lineage comprises the tetracuspidate African anthra- cotheres of the genera Afromeryx and Libycosaurus, which started out as hog-sized animals in the Early Miocene and ended up larger than hippopotami by the end of the Late Miocene. In mammal groups with few genera at any one time, such as the Neogene anthracotheres of Africa, not only can dental data yield evidence of geological age, but so can postcranial evidence. In the case of Late Neogene suids, which comprised several contemporaneous genera, dental data is useful for biochronology, but only when morphological and metric data are combined. In such groups, postcranial evidence is not as valuable because it is difficult to determine with confidence to which group such bones belong, save in the case of skeletons asso- ciated with teeth, of which there are extremely few in the African fossil record. In Africa, in contrast, anthracotheres had low diversity throughout the Neogene, with usually three or fewer taxa present at most levels older than 17.5 Ma, and only one after ca 16 Ma to the end of the Late Miocene.
