YWCA Northeast Indiana 2017 Annual Report
YWCA Northeast Indiana 2017 Annual Report Dedicated to eliminating racism, empowering women, and promoting peace, justice, freedom, and dignity for all. Northeast Indiana “We Shall Draw from the Heart of Suffering itself the Means of inspiration and Survival.” Sir Winston Churchill The YWCA of Northeast Indiana – OUR YW – has come through another amazing year. In 2017 we underwent major transformations, not unlike what our clients go through when they come to us. In March we fully integrated Hope House, our addiction recovery program, into our expanded shelter on Decatur Road. We now have 96 beds under one roof, and our shelter is housing women, men, and children who are recovering from domestic abuse as well as women who are recovering from drug and alcohol addiction. We continue to offer a full spectrum of domestic violence services throughout a six-county region in northeast Indiana; in Allen, DeKalb, Huntington, Noble, Wells and Whitley counties. Our community educators are teaching students grades 4-12 and adults working in ministry, law enforcement and health care about healthy relationships, the signs of unhealthy relationships and how to manage healthy interactions on social media. Our community case workers travel throughout our service region working with people that need help leaving an abusive situation or need help setting up a new life after they leave our shelter. We’re here for people when they are in a moment of crisis, and we are there to teach people how to avoid those crises. We take stands against injustice when we see it, whether on a personal or community level. -
1 a Countdown Conundrum
A Countdown conundrum – star and blogger obtain order to reveal author of deleted tweets The High Court has granted a Norwich Pharmacal order to a Countdown presenter and a campaigner over an anonymous Twitter account suspected of being operated by the defendant, Daniel Bennett.1 The account-holder in question, tweeting under the pseudonym Harry Tuttle, had defamed them in a series of tweets alleging (among other things) dishonesty, hypocrisy and far-right politics – tweets that were later deleted. In an unusual feature of this case, the defendant had accepted legal liability for the account, but declined to confirm or deny being the author of the tweets. Yet in the judge’s view that did not deprive the relevant claimants of the right to identify the author and to have the tweets and related data disclosed. Background Three individuals, David Collier, Rachel Riley and Tracy Ann Oberman, brought Part 8 proceedings against the defendant, Mr Bennett, a barrister, over a series of tweets under the pseudonym Harry Tuttle from an anonymous Twitter account, which the claimants suggested amounted to libel and harassment. Mr Collier is a blogger, researcher and campaigner against anti-Semitism. Ms Riley is a television presenter on Channel 4’s Countdown, and Ms Oberman is an actress. All three are Jewish and have taken public positions against the rise of anti-Semitism in the UK in recent years. Mr Bennett is also Jewish. The account-holder, who remains anonymous, but who the claimants suspect to be Mr Bennett, removed the tweets from public view in or around July 2019. -

Canadian Humour
Canadian humour Canadian humour is an integral part of the Canadian Identity. There are several traditions in Canadian humour in both English and French. While these traditions are distinct and at times very different, there are common themes that relate to Canadians' shared history and geopolitical situation in North America and the world. Various trends can be noted in Canadian comedy. One thread is the portrayal of a "typical" Canadian family in an on-going radio or television series. Examples include La famille Plouffe, with its mix of drama, humour, politics and religion and sitcoms such as King of Kensington and La Petite Vie. Another major thread tends to be political and cultural satire: television shows such as CODCO, Royal Canadian Air Farce, La Fin du monde est à 7 heures and This Hour Has 22 Minutes, monologuists such as Yvon Deschamps and Rick Mercer and writers, including Michel Tremblay, Will Ferguson and Eric Nicol draw their inspiration from Canadian and Québécois society and politics. Another trend revels in absurdity, demonstrated by television series like The Kids in the Hall and The Frantics, and musician-comedians such as The Arrogant Worms, Three Dead Trolls in a Baggie and Bowser and Blue. Satire is arguably the primary characteristic of Canadian humour, evident in each of these threads, and uniting various genres and regional cultural differences. Humber College in Toronto and the École nationale de l'humour in Montreal offer post-secondary programmes in comedy writing and performance. Montreal is also home to the bilingual (English and French) Just For Laughs festival and to the Just for Laughs museum, a bilingual, international museum of comedy. -
