Entomologie, Rosenstein 1, D-70191 Stuttgart, Germany Received 7 May 2002; accepted 17 July 2002 Abstract The morphology and functional anatomy of the mouthparts of pollen wasps (Masarinae, Hymenoptera) are examined by dissection, light microscopy and scanning electron microscopy, supplemented by field observations of flower visiting behavior. This paper focuses on the evolution of the long suctorial proboscis in pollen wasps, which is formed by the glossa, in context with nectar feeding from narrow and deep corolla of flowers. Morphological innovations are described for flower visiting insects, in particular for Masarinae, that are crucial for the production of a long proboscis such as the formation of a closed, air-tight food tube, specializations in the apical intake region, modification of the basal articulation of the glossa, and novel means of retraction, extension and storage of the elongated parts. A cladistic analysis provides a framework to reconstruct the general pathways of proboscis evolution in pollen wasps. The elongation of the proboscis in context with nectar and pollen feeding is discussed for aculeate Hymenoptera. q 2002 Elsevier Science Ltd. All rights reserved. However, solitary wasps sting in subduing prey, while social wasps do so in defense of the colony. The structure of the stinger is remarkably uniform across the large family that comprises both solitary and social species. The most notable source of variation is in the number and strength of barbs at the tips of the slender sting lancets that penetrate the wound in stinging. These are more numerous and robust in New World social species with very large colonies, so that in stinging human skin they often cannot be withdrawn, leading to sting autotomy, which is fatal to the wasp. This phenomenon is well-known from honey bees. Abstract: The physical features of the stinger are compared in 51 species of vespid wasps: 4 eumenines and zethines, 2 stenogastrines, 16 independent-founding polistines, 13 swarm-founding New World polistines, and 16 vespines. The overall structure of the stinger is remarkably uniform within the family. In conclusion, several different scenarios (e.g., recent dispersal events and radia- tions) can be used to explain the extant distribution of New Caledonian Hymenoptera. -

This study was conducted to record the biodiversity of subfamily Eumeninae indistrict Malakand. The specimens were collected from diverse localities of Malakand through active search with the use of hand net. The captured specimens were then killed by spraying insecticides in the hand nets. The killed specimens were transferred to bottles having 95% ethanol, cyanide and ethyl acetate. The specimens were then placed in freezer for 1 or 2 days to prevent any fungal contamination. The entomological pins were used for the pining of dead specimens. -

Your editor has been inundated with administrative matters and time has simply slipped by. Highlights of this issue involve news about people, some scientific notes, a few obituaries, some trip reports and of course the usual recent literature coverage which includes another of Robin Edwards 1 special vespoid sections. I want to take this opportunity to thank Helen Proctor for typing most of this newsletter for me. Thanks also go to LUdnri:l"a Kassianoff for translating some Russian titles into English, and to Yiau Min Huang for translating some Chinese titles into English. Judging by the comments received, the readership of Sphecos 4 enjoyed Eric Grissell's "profile" (p. 9) more than anything else in the issue. Congratulations Eric! Sphecos is gaining considerable recogn1t1on via reviews in journals. The most recent and most extensive being published in "Soviet Bibliography" for 1980, issue #6. The nearly 2 page lauditory review by I. Evgen'ev concludes with the statement "Sphecos [is] a highly useful publication for people around the world who study wasp biology and systematics" [Woj Pulawski generously translated the entire review for me into English]. Currently Sphecos is mailed to about 350 waspologists around the world. This figure includes a few libraries such as those at the BMNH, the Academy of Sciences of the USSR, Leningrad, the Albany Museum, Grahamstown, and the Nederlandse Entomologische Vereniging, Amsterdam to list a sample. -

Please keep sending me reports of your activities for inclusion in the next issue or else Sphecos will gradually diminish in size. There will be a gathering of hymenopterists from all over North America at the Annual Meeting of the Entomological Society of America at Toronto, Canada, this December. The purpose of this meeting is to establish a society and journal for hymenopterists. Your editor will attend; a summary of the meeting will appear in the next issue of Sphecos. In the last issue I listed the names of approximately 100 people who had not returned the Sphecos questionnaire, noting that they had been dropped from the active mailing list as a result. The response to this list was underwhelming - only a handful of people listed sent in the questionnaire - so my task of putting issues in envelopes and afixing mailing labels has been reduced by quite a bit. I would like to thank Vivian Spriggs for typing most of this issue of Sphecos. Research News/Help Needed 0. W. Richards (89 ST. They also present anatomic and morphological structures which are probably related to this behaviour. The patrolling behaviour of P. alternata is described for the first time and is quite similar to that of P. mellyi (Turillazzi, 1983a and b) with hovering flights near landmarks and displays of white stripes on the abdominal tergites. The patrolling flights occur at different times of the day with respect to P. mellyi. Males of P. mellyi form unisexual clusters on thread-like substrata in nidification sites. Our data show that foundress females of same species probably use these clusters as indicators that the substratum is a potentially good one for nidification.
