RACE 1 – MICHELLE’S BIRTHDAY - MAIDEN 3YO & UPWARDS – SET WEIGHTS - 1100 METRES The start of this race was delayed due to Geegees Big Effort being unable to be loaded and a number of other horses proving a slightly difficult to load. Geegees Big Effort (D Ganderton) – Underwent a pre-race veterinary examination and passed suitable to race as the gelding had not started in a race since December 2016. Unable to be loaded, was withdrawn at 1.20 pm. Prior to the announcement of correct weight Stewards ordered all monies invested on Geegees Big Effort to be refunded in full. All successful wagers made prior to 1.20 pm were to be paid less three cents in the dollar on the face value of the win ticket and less four cents in the dollar on the face value of the place ticket. Connections were advised that prior to starting again, the gelding must trial to the satisfaction of Stewards. Gratius (A Darmanin) – Rider A Darmanin was harmlessly dislodged en route to the barriers. Commenced awkwardly. Rider Darmanin stated that the gelding, which was first up since 31 December 2017, was off the bit for the majority of the race and in his opinion may be better suited over a longer distance. The Last Godfather (B Muhcu) – Shortly after the start, inconvenienced by Geegees First Lady which shifted in after bumping with Criterium. Criterium (B McCoull) – Shortly after the start, shifted in and bumped with Geegees First Lady. Rider B McCoull stated that the mare, which was having its first race start, raced greenly. However, he was satisfied with the way it ran on in the home straight. La Dernier Fille (T Baker) – Underwent a pre-race veterinary examination and passed suitable to race as the gelding had not started in a race since July 2017. Mistress of Design (B Smith (a) – Shortly after the start, restrained when momentarily tightened between La Dernier Fille and Gee Gee Top Tip. Shinvada (R Bishop) – Over-raced in the early and middle stages. Near the 500 metres, was steadied when racing tightly between La Dernier Fille and Golden State which shifted out slightly. Rider R Bishop stated that the mare raced greenly. Geegees First Lady (G Catania) – Bumped shortly after the start by Criterium. RACE 2 – SEPPELT CLASS 2 HANDICAP – 1100 METRES The start of this race was delayed due to an interstate thoroughbred race running behind schedule. Manilenya (A Darmanin) – Near the 500 metres, restrained off the heels of Clever Charlotte. Clever Charlotte (C Newitt) – Performed below expectations. Rider C Newitt stated that the filly failed to respond to his riding when placed under pressure and was disappointing. A post-race veterinary inspection failed to reveal any abnormalities. RACE 3 – TASKENO CLASS 4 HANDICAP – 1400 METRES Westerly Haze (B Muhcu) – Raced wide throughout. Rider B Muhcu explained that after starting from the widest barrier and as the gelding is better suited on firmer surfaces, he elected to ride to the outside of the track which he felt was the better part of the track. RACE 4 – FROTHY MAIDEN / CLASS 1 HANDICAP – SET WEIGHTS – 2100 METRES Correct weight was delayed when Apprentice Alex Patis, the rider of the fourth placegetter (Frisco Dame) and the connections asked to view the official patrol films. After doing so Apprentice Patis and the connections were satisfied and correct weight was declared Kandahar (S Carr) – Near the 1700 metres, lay outwards bumping with Kingsclere, which was taken out on to He’s Rushin’. Rider S Carr reported that the gelding laid out throughout the run. Kingsclere (J Maskiell) – Bumped by Kandahar near the 1700 metres. He’s Rushin’ (B Smith (a)) – Near the 1700 metres bumped with Kingsclere when taken out by Kandahar. Raced three wide without cover throughout. Approaching the 400 metres, steadied when racing tightly between Smooth Pebbles and Sharing Secrets which shifted in slightly. Performed below expectations. Rider B Smith explained that after racing wide, the gelding failed to run on in the home straight. Sharing Secrets (B McCoull) – Raced wide from the 1000 metres. Approaching the 100 metres, restrained when racing tight between Frisco Dame (A Patis) which shifted in slightly and Shivida (I Toker) which shifted out slightly. A Patis and I Toker were advised to exercise care when in similar circumstances. Shivida (I Toker) – Momentarily held up approaching the home turn and steadied off the heels of He’s Rushin’. Lay out in the home straight. Frisco Dame (A Patis (a)) – Slow into stride. Raced wide from the 1000 metres. From the 200 metres, had difficulty obtaining clear running behind Kingsclere and was unable to be fully tested to the finish. Pinkeyes Pride (R Bishop) – Slow into stride (2L). Over-raced in the early stages. RACE 5 – FOXTEL FOR BUSINESS BENCHMARK 80 HANDICAP – 2400 METRES Up Cups (R Bishop) – Near the 400 metres bumped by The Grey Crusader which shifted out to obtain clear running. Near the 200 metres, steadied off the heels of Demons Run (T Baker) which shifted out under pressure. Rider T Baker was advised to exercise care. Rider R Bishop stated that the gelding raced a little one paced today. Demons Run (T Baker) – Connections advised will be ridden further forward today. Raced behind the leader. Rider T Baker reported the gelding pulled up slightly distressed. A post-race veterinary inspection failed to reveal any abnormalities. Flash Missile (S Carr) – Underwent a pre-race veterinary inspection and passed suitable to race after slipping over in its stall and sustaining minor scratches and was also required to have its off hind shoe replaced. Rider S Carr had difficulty drawing her whip when entering the home straight. A post-race veterinary inspection of Flash Missile revealed a graze over the lateral area of the mare’s right hock. Perun (NZ) (A Darmanin) – Near the 1400 metres, when the pace eased, got its head up. The Grey Crusader (S Amano) - Over-raced in the early and middle stages. Momentarily held up passing the 400 metres before shifting out and bumping with Up Cups. Near the 300 metres, restrained after bumping with Up Cups and laying in toward the heels of Wyuna (C Newitt) which shifted out. C Newitt was reprimanded under AR.137(a) careless riding and advised to exercise care when shifting ground. RACE 6 – TASMANIAN HOSPITALITY ASSOCIATION MAIDEN – 3YO & UPWARDS – MAIDEN – SET WEIGHTS - 1400 METRES I Am The Dude (C Newitt) – Reared on jumping away and lost ground. Rider C Newitt explained that he had been given no firm instructions, however, after beginning awkwardly the gelding commenced to race keenly and so he then elected to allow it to roll forward. The Sword (J Maskiell) – Commenced awkwardly before shifting out and bumping with Sergio. Raced wide throughout. Sergio (S Amano) – Bumped at the start by The Sword. Raced three wide without cover throughout. Moonlight Escapade (T Voorham) - Late scratching at 3.50 pm due to a float breakdown. Prior to the announcement of correct weight Stewards ordered all monies invested on Moonlight Escapade to be refunded in full. Special Moment (I Toker) – Rider I Toker explained that with the filly being up in distance today and with the lack of early pace he was left further forward than at its most previous runs. Rider I Toker pleaded guilty to a charge under AR 137A(5)(a)(ii) in that he used his whip on nine occasions prior to the 100 metres which is four more than the permitted number under this Rule. After considering submissions on penalty and taking into account I Toker’s good record in relation to this Rule, he was subsequently fined $100. Style Guru (NZ) (R Bishop) – Over-raced during the middle stages when the pace eased. RACE 7 – TABCORP BENCHMARK 76 HANDICAP – 1100 METRES Nunivak (C Newitt) – Connections advised will be ridden further forward in an attempt to lead today. Settled behind the leaders. Near the 250 metres, was restrained and disappointed for a run to the outside of Apriano (B Smith (a)) which shifted out and then shifted back to the inside of that gelding. Apprentice B Smith was issued with a severe reprimand under AR 137(a) careless riding and advised to exercise care when in similar circumstances. RACE 8 – WOMEN IN TOURISM & HOSPITALITY BENCHMARK 64 HANDICAP – 1600 METRES Boart (A Patis (a)) – Over-raced in the early and middle stages and was then inclined to lay out in the home straight. Approaching the 200 metres, Rider Alex Patis fumbled her whip. Trusted Warrior (B McCoull) – Raced three wide without cover from the 800 metres. Heza Heart Throb (S Carr) – Performed below expectations. Rider S Carr could offer no explanation for today’s performance other than the gelding was up in class today. Gee Gee Wynett (D Ganderton) – Underwent a pre-race veterinary inspection upon arrival at the racecourse and passed suitable to race, after having transport difficulties and being delayed en route to the course. Slightly fractious in the barrier prior to the start.
