The series began serialization in Margaret magazine in and completed its run in the March 19, issue of the same magazine. During the year Meiji 25Sumi Kitamura is penniless and her Stepping on Roses Eisuke, a womanizer and gambler, constantly leaves them in debt while bringing even more orphaned children home to feed. When her adopted sister, Tomi, becomes ill, Sumi finds that no doctors will help her as they are poor and no one is willing to give her money for medicine to save Tomi. Then as Sumi is crying on the road a handsome man gives her a handkerchief and some Stepping on Roses, telling her to stop crying as smiles beckon happiness into her life before disappearing. Later a debt collector turns up at Sumi's house demanding yen. Eisuke is nowhere to be found and it is revealed that he had been making advances on the debt Stepping on Roses wife. The man Stepping on Roses that he will take away all of Sumi's younger siblings and sell them into slavery. Desperate to save Stepping on Roses siblings, Sumi goes to the red light district in an attempt to raise the money in one night. Just when she thinks there's no more hope, a man named Soichiro Ashida appears and says that he will buy her. Sumi goes with Stepping on Roses only to find that he was paying her to marry him! They immediately go to the church and afterwards he says that he'll pay for anything she could possibly want, but she has to marry him and not fall for him and that he will never love her. Soichirou doesn't seem to realize there's a spy in their midst even though he suspected Keiko as soon as she showed up. I guess he decided to give her the benefit of the Stepping on Roses. Bad move because she's once again followed them Stepping on Roses Sumi's house and discovered their secret! She tells Natsuki at which point he seems to be done with her. I wonder if she Stepping on Roses anything now? Nozomu has completely broken Miu it seems. I feel bad for her. That guy needs serious help. That painting he did of Sumi is creepy. What I don't get is that she seems attracted to him and scared of him at the same time. I don't understand why she allows herself to be alone with him. The girl should know better by now. She's lucky Keiko showed up when she did. I do wonder why Keiko went after her. What was that about? Soichirou Stepping on Roses to make up his mind about Sumi. He seems to have acknowledged to himself that he wants to be a family together with her, but he hasn't told Sumi that. She has no idea Soichirou wants her to love him now, so when he asks if she does, Stepping on Roses says no. She may not be completely there, yet, but she's definitely falling. She just won't admit it because Soichirou told her never to love him. He should learn to communicate better. Meanwhile, Natsuki seems to be moving his plans along. He knows about Sumi now and he must have been the one that had Eisuke show up for a job. Eisuke seems to be doing well now, at least. I hope things stay that way. Atari is also now living with Soichirou and Sumi because Komai who is living at Stepping on Roses place wants him to get a good education. I'm looking forward to seeing how this all plays out. Glad the maid stopped being evil. Miu has gone into crazy psycho jealous bitch mode. I understand why, but they didn't marry out of love or anything. Nozomu is a complete psycho too, I honestly hate him. He's completely deluded, Sumi doesn't even love Stepping on Roses I'm glad komai left, soichiro wasn't nice to him.
