GET READY FOR MEMORY MAKING 2020 CAMP GUIDE Memory making, coming right up! Boston University Fitness & Recreation Center’s Camp Terrier is packed with fun for your child aged 5 to 15. Camp days are active! Campers spend time running, jumping, kicking, twirling, climbing, splashing and making new friends. Camp Terrier is headquartered in FitRec – a hub of campus activity and energy. Opened in 2005, FitRec offers 6.6 acres of the latest and greatest in fitness and recreation equipment, facilities and services. Your child will swim in two of the region’s most celebrated collegiate pools, play in seven courts of gymnasia and climb on an ever-changing rock wall. With five floors to explore, FitRec boasts an endless variety of activities and sports to keep your camper active all day long. Plus, campers love the air conditioning on those hot, hot summer days! Shhhh. Don’t tell your camper, but the other thing that sets Camp Terrier apart - its learning outcomes. Each camp has its own educational and development goals, ensuring your child grows in confidence and learns new skills while enjoying the summer of a lifetime. With a variety of interest areas, your camper can choose how to spend their summer vacation – swimming, sailing, dancing, climbing or trying a little of everything. The camp day runs from 9 am to 5 pm, with drop off beginning at 8:30 am and pick up ending at 5:30 pm. In summer 2020, Camp Terrier runs from June 15 - August 21. Each camp option is directed by a full- time Boston University professional in their field. A licensed educator with 30+ years of camp experience? Check! A dancer with professional companies and entire career as dance faculty at a world class university? Check! Lifelong childhood development and recreation specialists? Check! They’re all here at Camp Terrier. Each staff member is trained in their area of specialty, as well as being CPR and First Aid certified and CORI certified. Pool and Waterfront staff are all Red Cross Lifeguard certified. Many of our staff members are teachers during the school year. All of our staff love to play games, be active and spend their summers with children at Camp Terrier! 2 | bu.edu/fitrec/camp ARTS & RECREATION AGES 5* - 8 Arts & Recreation campers are divided by age into two groups, 5 & 6 year olds and 7 & 8 year olds. Both groups will participate in a variety of activities designed to keep your child active and engaged including swim lessons, free swim, climbing, arts & crafts and much more! Each session has its own theme that is woven into activities, crafts and games. Past themes have included: “Red, White & Blue,” “Rainforests,” “Dance, Dance, Dance” and “Superheroes.” Each week will also include an on-site enrichment opportunity. In past summers, these activities have included Rainforest Reptiles, REACH! Dancers, Barn Babies and a “carnival” set-up in the gym. Prerequisites *All 5 year olds must be entering kindergarten in September 2020. We have the perfect focus for those campers looking to improve their climbing skills. The morning activities will consist of gym games such as capture the flag, followed by instructional swim lessons. The afternoon hours will focus on all aspects of climbing, including instruction for all levels and group climbing games. No prior climbing experience required. All sports and recreation groups regardless of focus will participate in daily instructional swim, recreational swim and a variety of games and activities in the gym. Tennis lessons will take place on Monday, Wednesday and Friday afternoons. Squash lessons are held on Tuesday and Thursday. Campers will also participate in daily instructional and recreational swim lessons and have an opportunity to climb the rock wall twice each session. SPORTS & RECREATION: SWIMMING FOCUS AGES 7 - 13 With two instructional swim lessons each day, your camper will be a more proficient swimmer in no time! The morning hours will consist of rock climbing, gym games (such as Newcomb or World Cup Soccer) and the first daily instructional swim lesson. After a picnic lunch outside, the campers will be engaged with lawn games leading up to another instructional swim session, free swim and then rounding out the day’s activities with fun in the gym. Swimming Focus campers will have two opportunities to climb each week. SPORTS & RECREATION: SAILING FOCUS AGES 9 - 13 Does your camper want to learn to sail on their own? Campers in this focus will learn all aspects of sailing, including: terminology, how to tie knots, rig their sailboat and capsize safely. Sailors of all abilities are welcome and no prior sailing experience is necessary. Campers will spend 3 hours per day on the Charles River and will be divided into groups based on age and sailing experience. All sailing focus campers will participate in daily instructional swim, recreational swim and a variety of games and activities in the gym.
