Rebecca Traister’s ‘Good and Mad’ Misses the Mark - The Atlantic My Account Give a Gift BOOKS Women Are Furious. Now What? In her new book, Rebecca Traister invokes rage to unify women in a LAURA KIPNIS NOVEMBER 2018 ISSUE battle against men. But being mad can prove divisive, too. Good and Mad: The Revolutionary Power of Women's Anger BY REBECCA TRAISTER SIMON & SCHUSTER NE OF THE unfunny witticisms going around during Hillary Clinton’s first presidential run was that she’d never get elected, because she reminded men O of their first wife. When a male friend relayed the update during her second run—no, she didn’t remind men of their first wife; she reminded them of their first wife’s divorce lawyer—I recall barking with laughter. The joke distilled all the male anxieties of the moment: Something was being taken away from them, their balls were in a vise, pissed-off women wanted men’s stuff and were going to be ruthless about trying to get it. https://www.theatlantic.com/magazine/archive/2018/11/rebecca-traister-good-and-mad/570826/[8/21/2020 1:34:46 PM] Rebecca Traister’s ‘Good and Mad’ Misses the Mark - The Atlantic BETH HOECKEL I recalled this joke while reading Rebecca Traister’s Good and Mad: The Revolutionary Power of Women’s Anger, which shares what might be called a divorce-court view of the gender situation in America. Men and women are on opposing sides, and women will succeed only by quashing men and seizing the spoils: the big jobs, the political offices, and the moral high ground.

Read Ebook {PDF EPUB} Nevertheless We Persisted 48 Voices of Defiance Strength and Courage by Amy Klobuchar Klobuchar, Amy. Nevertheless, We Persisted: 48 Voices of Defiance, Strength, and Courage. Klobuchar, Amy. Nevertheless, We Persisted: 48 Voices of Defiance, Strength, and Courage. Knopf/Penguin Random House, September 2018. 320p. $18.99. 978-1-52477196-6. Table of Contents. Biographies. Discussion Questions. Copyright Information. Index. The foreword for Nevertheless, We Persisted is written by United States Senator Amy Klobuchar, the first woman elected to represent Minnesota in the Senate. She relates the origin story of the "Nevertheless . " phrase, which was sarcastically lobbed at Senator Elizabeth Warren in a debate on the Senate floor. Klobuchar discusses how, instead of remaining an insulting end to a debate, the phrase becomes an ongoing inspiration to many Americans for strength and perseverance in the face of obstacles. The writers of these forty-eight stories of courage are men, women, and teens, including professional athletes, activists, musicians, celebrities, and even a twelve-year-old boxer. What they all have in common is a compelling story to tell about finding their own path by thinking for themselves. Questioning a society that does not value the strength of character required to fulfill individual potential, each storyteller refuses to abandon their quest. The narratives take a variety of formats, from a comic strip to an interview and essays. Most are quite short, three to five pages, none more than ten, and yet a tremendous amount of emotion and insight emanate from these brief tales of struggle. This is an invaluable collection of snapshots of American society, revealing instances of overcoming racism, bullying, and other troubling issues that need to be recognized, acknowledged, and addressed.
