  • Atlantic City Casinos Prepare to Reopen Sans Indoor Dining, Alcohol, Smoking
Atlantic City casinos prepare to reopen sans indoor dining, alcohol, smoking DAVID DANZIS Staff Writer ATLANTIC CITY — After a nearly four-month shutdown, eight of the city’s nine casinos vowed Tuesday to continue with plans to reopen by week’s end, despite Monday’s trio of surprise announcements by Gov. Phil Murphy adding to restrictions. The governor’s backtrack on allowing indoor dining to resume later this week caused Atlantic City’s highest- performing casino, Borgata Hotel Casino & Spa, to postpone its plans to reopen. In a late-evening executive order, Murphy prohibited food and beverage consumption, including alcohol, and smoking in any entertainment, retail or recreational establishment. Steve Callender, president of the Casino Association of New Jersey and senior vice president of Eastern regional operations for Tropicana Atlantic City’s parent company, Eldorado Resorts, said the industry was disappointed by Murphy’s decisions but understood the reasoning given increases in positive cases of COVID- 19 in the South and West. He said the casino industry will “make the best of it.” “We think we’re good at monitoring ourselves and making sure people follow rules, and we’re going to do that,” Callender said Tuesday. “And I think you’ll find that people that are coming here now will have their masks on, will be social distancing and, hopefully, within a couple of weeks, we’ll be able to go back to letting people have something to drink on the floor or dine indoors.” On Tuesday, Murphy said casinos will just have to endure a new reality until conditions improve.

  • The Many Sides of Atlantic City, Prevue Meetings +
The Many Sides of Atlantic City By Andrea Doyle July 31, 2019 Atlantic City is experiencing a renaissance. As a history buff, Atlantic City’s storied past has always fascinated me. Founded in 1854, tourists would stroll the world’s first boardwalk built as a way to prevent sand from being trekked into the lobbies of its elegant hotels. This is the birthplace of the Miss America Pageant and the inspiration for the world’s best-selling board game: Monopoly. In 1898, the Steel Pier opened in Atlantic City. One of its most famous attractions was the World-Famous Diving Horse where a horse and rider would plunge from a 40-ft.-tower into a 12-ft.-deep pool of water. Although the last time a horse took a dive on the Steel Pier was in 1978, today the Steel Pier still delights. Whirling lights, whizzing rides, and the sweet aroma of cotton candy and funnel cakes intermingle with the scent of freshly popped popcorn. Claw machines, Skee-ball are all here to enjoy as is the Steel Pier’s newest attraction—a 227-ft. observation wheel with 40 temperature-controlled gondolas that seat up to six people each. The ride lasts 15 minutes, and its 14,500 lights that change color and illuminate this section of the Boardwalk, including the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino Atlantic City, injecting high energy and pulsating beats into this historic seaside destination. Hard Rock Hotel & Casino has energized Atlantic City. The moment you step into the lobby, you know you are not in a typical hotel.
