For Immediate Release January 2016 PLAYHOUSE SQUARE January 12-17, 2016 Playhouse Square is proud to announce that the U.S. National Tour of ANNIE, now in its second smash year, will play January 12 - 17 at the Connor Palace in Cleveland. Directed by original lyricist and director Martin Charnin for the 19th time, this production of ANNIE is a brand new physical incarnation of the iconic Tony Award®-winning original. ANNIE has a book by Thomas Meehan, music by Charles Strouse and lyrics by Martin Charnin. All three authors received 1977 Tony Awards® for their work. Choreography is by Liza Gennaro, who has incorporated selections from her father Peter Gennaro’s 1977 Tony Award®-winning choreography. The celebrated design team includes scenic design by Tony Award® winner Beowulf Boritt (Act One, The Scottsboro Boys, Rock of Ages), costume design by Costume Designer’s Guild Award winner Suzy Benzinger (Blue Jasmine, Movin’ Out, Miss Saigon), lighting design by Tony Award® winner Ken Billington (Chicago, Annie, White Christmas) and sound design by Tony Award® nominee Peter Hylenski (Rocky, Bullets Over Broadway, Motown). The lovable mutt “Sandy” is once again trained by Tony Award® Honoree William Berloni (Annie, A Christmas Story, Legally Blonde). Musical supervision and additional orchestrations are by Keith Levenson (Annie, She Loves Me, Dreamgirls). Casting is by Joy Dewing CSA, Joy Dewing Casting (Soul Doctor, Wonderland). The tour is produced by TROIKA Entertainment, LLC. The production features a 25 member company: in the title role of Annie is Heidi Gray, an 11- year-old actress from the Augusta, GA area, making her tour debut. -

This Encores! Special Event, directed by frequent Sondheim collaborator John Doyle, with choreography by Parker Esse and musical supervision by David Loud, was conceived by Peter Gethers, Jack Viertel and John Doyle, and will run for seven performances, November 13 – 17 at City Center. Guide to Color Filters
s a producer of color filters for the performing arts, Rosco has focussed on the science of color for nearly 100 years. But stage lighting is an art, not a science. The people who use Rosco filters are artists who manipulate the spectrum to enhance stage pic- A tures, dealing with appearance, reflectance, perception, contrast and psychological impact. This guide was developed with two objectives. First to provide some background in the science to those who utilize color artistically and second, to offer some recommen- dations for color selection. Most of the colors in the Rosco range have been created by designers over the years to achieve specific effects and the range is extensive. By additive mixing using multiple sources and by using multiple filters in units, a virtually unlimited palette can be achieved. Apparent color can also be made to appear “cooler” at a higher dimmer setting and “warmer” at a lower intensity, permitting further variation. It is unlikely, however, that the range is complete. Designers will contin- ue to innovate and the artistic needs will evolve. City-Theatrical-30-Year-Anniversary 2016
Written by Gary Fails Since we are celebrating the 30th anniversary of City Theatrical this year, it’s a good time to put the history of the company down on paper. Many very talented people have put a lot of their lives into growing CTI, and it has been quite an adventure. For all of us, it has been about how we invent, manufacturer, and customize unique lighting accessories. By the time I started City Theatrical in 1986 I had already spent 15 years in technical theatre, the only career I have ever had after dropping out of Columbia University. I spent 10 years travelling around the U.S. and around the world first with Dance Theatre of Harlem, and later as an electrician working for Broadway production electricians Mitch Miller and Steve Cochrane. I went back to New York City to become a Local One apprentice, spending 39 months in that role at Four Star Lighting in the South Bronx. In 1986 I was still working during the daytime at Four Star, and at night I was a Local One electrician on Broadway. At that time I was the house electrician at Circle in the Square Theatre on West 50th St. My Local One apprenticeship gave me some skills that are important to me to this day. I became a certified welder and licensed New York State laser operator, and those were great skills, but the skill that actually ended up being the most important to me was that I was trained in sheet metal. Sheet metal design is a unique skill and it’s vital to both the entertainment and architectural lighting fields since nearly all products and accessories of that era were made from sheet metal, and many still are today.
