MORE EXPENSIVE THAN BITCOIN Rare Islamic gold dinar expected to fetch around £1.4m at Sotheby’s auction next month THE CITY VIEW High street headwinds hit John Lewis hard

OHN Lewis reported its first ever half-year loss yesterday, blaming falling sales and rising costs for a Jgloomy six months. It’s bad news for incoming chair – and retail rookie – Sharon White, who has a challenge on her hands to turn around the department store’s fortunes. The issues facing the retail giant aren’t new – profit margins fell 90 per cent in the first half of last year – but they appear to be deepening as the high street struggles to adapt to the internet economy and high property costs. While some turn to mass discounting to boost sales, few retail-watchers believe White would be wise to pursue that tactic at the beloved brand. Instead, investing in transforming stores and capturing market share could secure John Lewis’ future. It’s hardly a surprise that some are questioning the “never knowingly undersold” strategy STAFF at Morton and Eden are expecting to fetch a staggering £1.4m when they sell an extremely rare gold coin at auction in London. EORGIA have spent the better part of a decade stuck in European Rugby’s no man’s land, wedged under the glass ceiling Gthat separates them from the conti- nent’s elite. Currently, their primary competi- tion is the Rugby Europe Champi- onship, the second tier beneath the far more prestigious Six Nations. Georgia have won nine of the last 11 editions – in their eyes, it is a compe- tition that they have far outgrown. Head coach Milton Haig has made no secret of his desire to join the Six Nations. They feel they have earned it: they are ranked two places higher than Six Nations minnows Italy. However, the ring-fenced competi- tion does not seem to want them. ANY horror films begin with an opening period of calm serenity. A group of fresh-faced innocence SHOW teenagers go to a cabin by aM lake. A family check into a remote, eerie, cobweb-filled mansion. A group of friends head off on a road trip across the barren countryside. Initially the characters go about their lives with a degree of certainty, and yet, despite their attempts, AT THE there’s no lulling the audience into a false sense of security because they are fully aware of what is to come. After all, they bought a ticket to watch a film with a foreboding title and a scary image on the poster. We knew what was coming. Like someone walking into the cin- ema to see a horror film we knew what we had signed up for. England fans take nothing for granted. After winning the toss, Australia captain Tim Paine may have made, at best, a bold decision to bowl first. With the Ashes already retained he may have offered an olive branch to England, handing them the best op- portunity to recover from the decisive defeat at Old Trafford and level the se- ries at 2-2. But when England bat there’s al- ways danger lurking just around the corner.
