These new data allowed the definition of an updated and sound calpionellid biozonation scheme for the section. In this scheme, the drowning event of a carbonate platform displayed by the facies of the San Vicente Member, the lowermost unit of the section, is dated as Late Tithonian, Boneti Subzone. The Jurassic/Cretaceous boundary was recognized within the facies of the overlying El Americano Member on the basis of the acme of Calpionella alpina Lorenz. The boundary is placed nearly six meters above the contact between the San Vicente and the El Americano Members, in a facies linked to a sea-level drop. The recorded calpionellid bioevents should allow correlations of the Cuban biozonation scheme herein proposed, with other previously published schemes from distant areas of the Tethyan Domain. -

Surface Currents Near the Greater and Lesser Antilles
SURFACE CURRENTS NEAR THE GREATER AND LESSER ANTILLES by C.P. DUNCAN rl, S.G. SCHLADOW1'1 and W.G. WILLIAMS SUMMARY The surface flow around the Greater and Lesser Antilles is shown to differ considerably from the widely accepted current system composed of the Caribbean Current and Antilles Current. The most prominent features deduced from dynamic topography are a flow from the north into the Caribbean near Puerto Rico and a permanent eastward-flowing counter-current in the Caribbean itself between Puerto Rico and Venezuela. Noticeably absent is the Antilles Current. A satellite-tracked buoy substantiates the slow southward flow into the Caribbean and the absence of the Antilles Current. INTRODUCTION Pilot Charts for the North Atlantic and the Caribbean Sea (Defense Mapping Agency, 1968) show westerly surface currents to the North and South of Puerto Rico. The Caribbean Current is presented as an uninterrupted flow which passes through the Caribbean Sea, Yucatan Straits, Gulf of Mexico, and Florida Straits to become the Gulf Stream. It is joined off the east coast of Florida by the Antilles Current which is shown as flowing westwards along the north coast of Puerto Rico and then north-westerly along the northern edge of the Bahamas (BOISVERT, 1967). These surface currents are depicted as extensions of the North Equatorial Current and the Guyana Current, and as forming part of the subtropical gyre. As might be expected in the absence of a western boundary, the flow is slow-moving, shallow and broad. This interpretation of the surface currents is also presented by WUST (1964) who employs the same set of ship’s drift observations as are used in the Pilot Charts. -

BRUNNSCHWEILER 7Arkana Street, Yarralumla ACT 2600 Australia Why “Pigeons on the Roof’? asked Rudi Brunnschweiler’s daughters when they saw the title page of their father’s latest spare-time project, the draft of a book subtitled “Memoirs of an Explorer.” The title, he replied, was bor rowed from an old Swiss proverb that admonishes “rather than chasing pigeons on the roof, be content with the spar row in your hand.” No doubt many would have been happy with the sparrow, but not Rudi. He aimed his sights higher, and the challenge this philosophy presented was for him the spice of life, its joy and fulfillment. Rudolf Oskar Brunnschweiler was bom in St. Gallen, Switzerland, on December 12, 1915, the oldest of four children of accountant and pioneer sports pilot Oskar Emmanuel Brunnschweiler and his wife Johanna Martha (nee Vogel), concert pianist; they were citizens of Hauptwil, Canton Thurgau. After his early schooling in Ennenda and Glarus, Rudi entered college at Schiers, from which he matriculated in 1935. He then attended the Federal Technological Institute in Zurich to study civil engineering until mid-1938, when he transferred to the faculty of natural sciences at the University of Zurich. In 1941 he married Emmy (“Micky”) Alwine Kiene. Starting a family in those turbulent war years while still a student took considerable courage. Rudi and Micky’s faith in each other and the future proved to be fully justified, and they shared a happy and adventurous lifetime together. -

The fossil specimens that have been collected so far are dispersed in museum collections around the world and some have been lost throughout the years. A reas- sessment of the fossil material stored in some of these museums’ collections has generated new data about the fossil-bearing lo- calities and greatly increased the number of formally identified specimens. The identified bone elements and taxa suggest a high vertebrate diversity dominated by actinopterygians and reptiles, including: long-necked plesiosaurs, pliosaurs, metriorhynchid crocodilians, pleurodiran turtles, ichthyosaurs, pterosaurs, and sauropod dinosaurs. This assemblage is commonly associated with unidentified remains of terrestrial plants and rare microor- ganisms, as well as numerous marine invertebrates such as am- monites, belemnites, pelecypods, brachiopods, and ostracods. This fossil assemblage is particularly valuable because it includes the most complete marine reptile record of a chronostratigraphic interval, which is poor in vertebrate remains elsewhere. In this contribution, the current status of the available vertebrate fossil specimens from the Late Jurassic of western Cuba is provided, along with a brief description of the fossil materials. Cretaceous decapods are reported from Puerto Rico for the first time, and the Cretaceous fauna is similar to that of southern Mexico. Herein is included the first report of Pleistocene decapods from Puerto Rico, which were previously known from other Caribbean localities. The Pleistocene Cardisoma guanhumi is a freshwater crab of the family Gecarcinidae. The freshwater crab families have a poor fossil record; thus, the occurrence is noteworthy and may document dispersal of the crab by humans.
