We have monographed species of Phyllachora occurring on the pantropical plant family Asclepiadaceae using traditional taxonomic methods. Eight Phyllachora species have been described previously from the Asclepiadaceae. We have found that five of these taxa are untenable. In addition, P. gloriana sp. novo on Tylophora benthamii, north Queensland, Australia, is described. Phyllachora gloriana differs from other Phyllachora species occurring on the Asclepiadaceae in having larger ascospores surrounded by a distinct mucilaginous sheath, and larger asci with an apical apparatus. The accepted Phyllachora species from the Asclepiadaceae are described and illustrated with interference contrast micrographs. Key words: foliicolous fungi, tar spots, taxonomy Introduction The Phyllachoraceae are a diverse family of micro fungi currently recognised as comprising 42 genera and more than 1100 species worldwide (Hawksworth et al., 1995). Most members of this family are obligate biotrophs which produce black "tar spots" on leaves and stems of their host plants. -

Chapter 13 Black and Pale Swallow-Wort (Vincetoxicum nigrum and V. rossicum): The Biology and Ecology of Two Perennial, Exotic and Invasive Vines C.H. Douglass, L.A. Weston, and A. DiTommaso Abstract Black and pale swallow-worts are invasive perennial vines that were introduced 100 years ago into North America. Their invasion has been centralized in New York State, with neighboring regions of southern Canada and New England also affected. The two species have typically been more problematic in natural areas, but are increasingly impacting agronomic systems such as horticultural nurs- eries, perennial field crops, and pasturelands. While much of the literature reviewed herein is focused on the biology and management of the swallow-worts, conclu- sions are also presented from research assessing the ecological interactions that occur within communities invaded by the swallow-wort species. In particular, we posit that the role of allelopathy and the relationship between genetic diversity lev- els and environmental characteristics could be significant in explaining the aggres- sive nature of swallow-wort invasion in New York. Findings from the literature suggest that the alteration of community-level interactions by invasive species, in this case the swallow-worts, could play a significant role in the invasion process. Phylogeny and Systematics of the Rauvolfioideae
PHYLOGENY AND SYSTEMATICS Andre´ O. Simo˜es,2 Tatyana Livshultz,3 Elena OF THE RAUVOLFIOIDEAE Conti,2 and Mary E. Endress2 (APOCYNACEAE) BASED ON MOLECULAR AND MORPHOLOGICAL EVIDENCE1 ABSTRACT To elucidate deeper relationships within Rauvolfioideae (Apocynaceae), a phylogenetic analysis was conducted using sequences from five DNA regions of the chloroplast genome (matK, rbcL, rpl16 intron, rps16 intron, and 39 trnK intron), as well as morphology. Bayesian and parsimony analyses were performed on sequences from 50 taxa of Rauvolfioideae and 16 taxa from Apocynoideae. Neither subfamily is monophyletic, Rauvolfioideae because it is a grade and Apocynoideae because the subfamilies Periplocoideae, Secamonoideae, and Asclepiadoideae nest within it. In addition, three of the nine currently recognized tribes of Rauvolfioideae (Alstonieae, Melodineae, and Vinceae) are polyphyletic. We discuss morphological characters and identify pervasive homoplasy, particularly among fruit and seed characters previously used to delimit tribes in Rauvolfioideae, as the major source of incongruence between traditional classifications and our phylogenetic results. Based on our phylogeny, simple style-heads, syncarpous ovaries, indehiscent fruits, and winged seeds have evolved in parallel numerous times. A revised classification is offered for the subfamily, its tribes, and inclusive genera. Despite the com- plex floral structure of the Asclepiadoideae, self-pollination is known for the genera Vincetoxicum WOLF and Tylophora R. BR., highly derived gen- era of the tribe Asclepiadeae. The hypothesis that self-pollination is an important prerequisite for the invasive character of some Vincetoxicum species in USA and Canada has been put forward (LUMER & YOST 1995). In addition, indigenous herbivores probably avoid Vincetoxicum for its alka- loids, which are absent from other American Asclepiadoideae. Sapro- myiophily is the most frequent mode of pollination, and has been evolved at least three times independently in Periplocoideae, Asclepiadoideae- Ceropegieae and Asclepiadoideae-Asclepiadeae-Gonolobinae. The compo- sition of various scent bouquets associated with sapromyiophily has been analyzed and four different main compositions have been identified (JÜR- GENS & al. 2006). -

CHEW Department of Botany, National University of Singapore, Lower Kent Ridge Road, Singapore 0511, Republic of Singapore 1 National Parks Board, Botanic Gardens, Cluny Road, Singapore 1025, Republic of Singapore EFFECTIVE PUBLICATION DATE: 15 MAR 1993 Abstract From field and hebarium studies, two new fern and 23 angiosperm taxa were found to have been pre viously overlooked or newly discovered in Singapore. Brief notes on their description, distribution and ·collecting localities are made for each. Introduction A comprehensive list of vascular plant species has been compiled for Singapore (Turner et a/., 1990) from literature and herbarium work. In the course of field work and examination of specimens at the Herbarium, Singapore Botanic Gardens (SING) and the Herbarium, Department of Botany, National University of Singapore (SINU), new records of species were made. Voucher specimens for each newly discovered taxon have been deposited in SINU and/or SING. New Records Adiantaceae I. Adiantum fructuosum Spreng. A large ornamental fern with bipinnate fronds which can grow up to 100 em long. It originates from the rainforest of tropical America where it is found from Mexico and the West Indies, southern Peru and Brazil. It appears to be naturalized in Singapore and occurs on shaded earth banks along Seton Close and Cluny Road. Here, the plants are about 40 em tall and freely fertile. (Specimen - Y.C. Wee 451) 2. Adiantum latifo/ium Lam. A tropical American fern, occurring naturally from Mexico to South America, as well as the Greater Antilles, Virgin Islands and Trinidad.
