Competing in the quarter-finals gives the eight teams a massive opportunity to make it through to the promised land of the DELO EHF FINAL4 in Budapest and the chance to be crowned champions. If the play-offs were anything to go by then we are in for a treat in our four quarter-final ties that feature some of the biggest names in women’s handball. CSM Bucuresti earned their place thanks to a thrilling two-legged victory over their old Romanian rivals SCM Ramnicu Valcea. Having recorded a healthy win in the first leg, Bucuresti just did enough to prevent a comeback from Valcea, eventually getting the job done by three goals. Bucuresti now meet CSKA Moscow in the last eight. The Russian outfit were also involved in a thrilling play-off match, overturning a first leg deficit against RK Krim Mercator to advance to this stage by just one goal.

Following an inspiring Women’s EHF EURO 2020 in Denmark, where Norway with no fewer than 17 DELO EHF Champions League players in their squad came out on top to claim their eighth European gold medal, attention switches back to the club game and a crucial period of what has already proven to be a fascinating season so far. One of the encouraging aspects of the season so far has been the professional and sensible way the handball community has dealt with the challenging circumstances of the current pandemic. From the European Handball Federation’s perspective, clubs, players and staff, and federations deserve huge amounts of credit for the ways in which they have conducted themselves; placing measures and following instructions to ensure matches at the highest level of handball going ahead. As a result, the fans – the heartbeat of our game – are still able to follow their favourite teams, even if it is sadly not inside the arenas.

We are at the beginning of a new and exciting project this season following the merging of the Women’s EHF Cup and the Women’s Cup Winners’ Cup. This new format has been developed in order to create a high-quality platform for those clubs wanting to play top-class international handball and perhaps also striving to play in the European handball’s top flight – the Women’s EHF Champions League – in the future. This may be a new development for women’s handball but it has been inspired by the success of the changes made to the Men’s EHF Cup from the start of the 2012/13 season.
