A READING FROM THE LETTER OF PAUL TO THE COLOSSIANS As God's chosen ones, holy and beloved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, meekness, and patience. Bear with one another and, if anyone has a complaint against another, forgive each other; just as the Lord has forgiven you, so you also must forgive. Above all, clothe yourselves with love, which binds everything together in per- fect harmony. And let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, to which indeed you were called in the one body. And be thankful. Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly; teach and admonish one another in all wisdom; and with gratitude in your hearts sing psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs to God. And whatever you do, in word or deed, do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him. COLOSSIANS 3:12-17

THE HOLY GOSPEL OF OUR LORD JESUS CHRIST ACCORDING TO LUKE Now every year his parents went to Jerusalem for the festival of the Passover. And when he was twelve years old, they went up as usual for the festival. When the festival was ended and they started to return, the boy Jesus stayed behind in Jerusalem, but his par- ents did not kno w it. Assuming that he was i n the group of travellers, they went a day's journey. Then they started to look for him among their relatives and friends. When they did not find him, they returned to Jerusalem to search for him. After three days they found him in the temple, sitting among the teachers, listening to them and asking them questions. And all who heard him were amazed at his understanding and his answers. When his parents saw him they were astonished; and his mother said to him, "Child, why have you treated us like this? Look, your father and I have been searching for you in great anxiety." He said to them, "Why were you searching for me? Did you not know that I must be in my Father's house?" But they did not understand what he said to them. Then he went down with them and came to Nazareth, and was obedient to them. His mother treasured all these things i n her heart. And Jesus increased in wi sdom and in years, and in divine and human favour. LUKE 2:41-52

This Morning’s Music The music for this morning’s introit, “Ding Dong! Merrily on High,” first appeared as a secular 16 th c. dance tune. The lyrics are from English composer George Ratcliffe Wood- ward (1848–1934), and it was first published in 1924 in his Book of Carols . Woodward’s interest in church bell ringing is, shall we say, evident! The harmonization is by Charles Wood , a professor of music at . The quasi-homonymic team of Wood and Woodward collaborated on editing three books of carols.

DECEMBER 30, 2012 8 The opening melody of Sicut cervus, is first offered by the tenors and then repeated voice by voice, layer upon layer until the full choir is singing. Gustave Reese in his Music in the Renaissance (1959) describes the first few bars with the “...gradual rise in the me- lodic line followed by a fall that balances it with almost mathematical exactness.” Pal- estrina’s legendary mastery of counterpoint is matched only by his musical restraint; the beautiful melodies spun within his contrapuntal web are perfectly balanced, each word—each syllable—receives the proper stress and length, and the overall effect is at all times supremely pleasing and varied. It is no surprise that his contemporaries referred to him as “The Prince of Music.” Sicut cervus is considered by many to be the most out- standing example of religious choral art from the Renaissance. Its text is a setting of the Tract for the Blessing of the Font, taken from Psalm 42, and designated for Holy Satur- day and thus a perfect gift from the Choir to the infant Delilah on the occasion of her Baptism. We shall see if she enjoys it! Peter Wishart was an English composer who studied with in Paris from 1947-1948. He taught at the Guildhall School of Music, University, King’s College London and Reading University where he became Professor of Music in 1977. His compositions include five neo-classical operas, orchestral and chamber pieces, and a large amount of church music of which this evening’s “Alleluya, a New Work Is Come on Hand” is his most recognized choral work. Originally, the hymn tune, SURSUM CORDA, was meant to be sung in unison with very little, if any accompaniment, and initially, the Scarlett/Peacey text of this morning’s choral benediction was set out that way. Alexander Tilley ’s arrangement captures the essence of the text in a wonderful four-part version.
