President’s Message

Consumers Boost Logistics Sector

Stronger shipment volumes allowed the transportation sector to grow 3.6 percent last year as solid economic growth and consistent job creation provided consumers with additional buying power. As consumer spending grew, freight levels climbed as retailers replen- ished inventory, according to the State of Logistics Report released by the Council of Supply Chain Management Professionals and Penske Logistics.

The report says the supply chain logistics industry experienced its best year since the Great Recession as consumers - the missing link in the recovery - returned to the marketplace.

Findings in the report include:  Railroad sector costs grew 6.5 percent as rail traffic reached its highest annual total on record. The 4.5 percent increase in traffic volume brought the industry close to its pre-recession volumes.  The truck driver shortage remains a key concern for the logistics sector.  Shipments through the nation's ports increased, with East Coast ports seeing the biggest gains due to West Coast port delays and congestion.  Competition kept air cargo rates down, and the sector costs declined 1.2 percent. However, a record US $968 billion of high-value merchandise moved by air in 2014.

Internet of Things (IoT) Helping to Connect Logistics

Global internet access and the declining cost of Internet of Things (loT) components, such as RFID and sensors, are driving the demand for connected logistic solutions. Connected Logistics Market, a research report by MarketsandMarkets, estimates that by 2020 the market will be worth US$20.46 bil- lion. Big data and analytics platforms are increasing the loT market, which is expected to flourish in the coming years due to increasing use of mobile applications along with the rapid proliferation of embedded sensor technology, wearables and applications.

Connected logistics solutions have had a substantial impact on logistics operations, although some companies are reluctant to adopt loT in logistics. The roadblocks to acceptance include security is- sues, lack of awareness, and information and communications technology infrastructure. An example of connected logistics is the use of pallet or item-level tagging using low-cost miniature devices in warehouse inventory management systems. (www.marketsandmarkets.com)
