Chapter 8 Manzanar
CHAPTER 8 MANZANAR Introduction The Manzanar Relocation Center, initially referred to as the “Owens Valley Reception Center”, was located at about 36oo44' N latitude and 118 09'W longitude, and at about 3,900 feet elevation in east-central California’s Inyo County (Figure 8.1). Independence lay about six miles north and Lone Pine approximately ten miles south along U.S. highway 395. Los Angeles is about 225 miles to the south and Las Vegas approximately 230 miles to the southeast. The relocation center was named after Manzanar, a turn-of-the-century fruit town at the site that disappeared after the City of Los Angeles purchased its land and water. The Los Angeles Aqueduct lies about a mile to the east. The Works Progress Administration (1939, p. 517-518), on the eve of World War II, described this area as: This section of US 395 penetrates a land of contrasts–cool crests and burning lowlands, fertile agricultural regions and untamed deserts. It is a land where Indians made a last stand against the invading white man, where bandits sought refuge from early vigilante retribution; a land of fortunes–past and present–in gold, silver, tungsten, marble, soda, and borax; and a land esteemed by sportsmen because of scores of lakes and streams abounding with trout and forests alive with game. The highway follows the irregular base of the towering Sierra Nevada, past the highest peak in any of the States–Mount Whitney–at the western approach to Death Valley, the Nation’s lowest, and hottest, area. The following pages address: 1) the physical and human setting in which Manzanar was located; 2) why east central California was selected for a relocation center; 3) the structural layout of Manzanar; 4) the origins of Manzanar’s evacuees; 5) how Manzanar’s evacuees interacted with the physical and human environments of east central California; 6) relocation patterns of Manzanar’s evacuees; 7) the fate of Manzanar after closing; and 8) the impact of Manzanar on east central California some 60 years after closing. -

Trans Sierra roads –SR 4 (Ebbets Pass) and SR 108 (Sonora Pass) is scheduled to open Friday (5/4) at noon. SR 120 (Tioga Pass) is scheduled to open on Monday (5/7) at noon. SR 89 (Monitor Pass) and June Lake Loop (SR 158) are open. Call 1-800-427-ROAD (1-800-427-7623) or visit the website at www.dot.ca.gov for California highway conditions and construction schedules. For Nevada roads, call 1-877-NVROADS (1-877-687-6237) or visit the web at www.nevadadot.com. In YOSEMITE NATIONAL PARK, the Glacier Point road is open. BODIE STATE HISTORIC PARK road (SR 270) is open. The road to DEVILS POSTPILE NATIONAL MONUMENT and Reds Meadow is closed due to snow. The Rock Creek road is open to Rock Creek Lake. In Bishop Creek, SR 168 is open to Lake Sabrina and the South Lake road is open. The North Lake road is closed. In the White Mountains, the road to the Ancient Bristlecone Pine Forest is open to Schulman Grove. The dirt road north of Schulman Grove is open to its junction with the Wyman Canyon Road, closed to the north of the junction. Silver and Wyman Canyon roads are open; high clearance vehicles recommended. -
Manzanar National Historic Site Geologic Resource Evaluation
MANZANAR NATIONAL HISTORIC SITE GEOLOGIC RESOURCES MANAGEMENT ISSUES SCOPING SUMMARY Sid Covington Geologic Resources Division October 26, 2004 Executive Summary Geologic Resource Evaluation scoping meetings for three parks in the Mojave Network were held April 28 - May 1, 2003, in St George, UT, Barstow, CA, and Twentynine Palms, CA, respectively. Unfortu- nately, due to time and travel constraints, scoping was not done at Manzanar National Historic Site (MANZ). The following report identifies the major geologic issues and describes the geology of MANZ and the surrounding the area. The major geologic issues affecting the park are: 1. Flooding and erosion due to runoff from the Sierra Nevada mountains to the west. 2. Recurring seismic activity 3. The potential for volcanic activity from Long Valley Caldera 4. Proposed gravel pit upslope from MANZ Introduction The National Park Service held Geologic Resource Evaluation scoping meetings for three parks in the Mojave Network: Parashant National Monument, Mojave National Preserve, and Joshua Tree National Park. These meeting were held April 28 - May 1, 2003, in St George, UT, Barstow, CA and Twentynine Palms, CA respectively. The purpose of these meeting was to discuss the status of geologic mapping, the associated bibliography, and the geologic issues in the respective park units. The products to be derived from the scoping meeting are: (1) Digitized geologic maps covering the park units; (2) An updated and verified bibliography; (3) Scoping summary (this report); and (4) A Geologic Resources Evaluation Report which brings together all of these products. Although there was no onsite scoping for MANZ, these products will be produced for the historic site. -

Mammoth Trails Regular Meeting Summary April 15, 2010 4–5:30 p.m. Mammoth Lakes Library A. Call to Order: The meeting was called to order by MLTPA CEO/Board President John Wentworth at 4:10 p.m. at the Mammoth Lakes Library in Mammoth Lakes, California. Also in attendance were Steve Speidel and Danna Stroud (Town of Mammoth Lakes); Drew Blankenbaker, Megan Mahaffey, Colin Farrell, and Kim Stravers (MLTPA); and Charter Members Mark Mix (Disabled Sports Eastern Sierra), Hank Garretson (Eastern Sierra Nordic Ski Association), Alana Levin (High Sierra Triathlon Club), John Armstrong (Eastside Velo), and Malcolm Clark (Sierra Club). B. Additions to Agenda: None. C. Special Updates 1. Sherwins Area Recreation Plan (SHARP) a. Trails Technical Committee (TTC) Kickoff Meeting: Update: Mr. Wentworth informed the group that the TTC had their first meeting the night before, and though turnout was disappointing the work was productive. The TOML, USFS, and MLTPA were at the table, as were a handful of individuals representing different interest groups and bringing different skill sets to the process. Upcoming meetings will occur at the end of April and again in May and June, and Mammoth Trails participants are encouraged to get involved. Ms. Stroud noted that the candidates for the upcoming Town Council election are interested in this effort and that outreach should be expanded to involve more of the public and to provide more community information, as there are significant opportunities for training and skills development. Mr. Wentworth noted that a field-training day has been planned with USFS Trails Specialist Keith Dawley, and that participant Mark Hendrickson, who works at the Mammoth Mountain Bike Park, brings a lot of skills to the table. -
