Their initial clients Included Grim Reaper* Percy Jones, and Cities. Bob and Walter remember, "We were starving...we opened a small office that we shared with a computer company....We were plugging like crazy on Grim Reaper, and although things were going great with the band... Their first record sold about a quarter of a million and their second record sold about a hundred seventy five thousand... but we weren't seeing any money as 1t was being filtered through a small Independent label in England and then supposedly back to us." Although there was no money coming in, Concrete was developing valuable connections in the then relatively underground area of heavy metal music. It was and is an area where traditional record marketing doesn't work. They developed relationships with the "fanzines" (undergroud fan magazines), non-traditional record stores and college radio stations and began to realize they had found a special nltch. At the New Music Seminar in 1985 Concrete distributed a write up on the area of music they were becoming specialists 1n, and at one of the cocktail parties Rick Dobbis offered them their first outside marketing project on Armoured Saint for Chrysalis. Almost at the same time they also picked up marketing on the group Anthrax for Megaforce/Island through their friend Jonny Z. Suddenly things took off. Bob points out, " The problem was that the majors were hearing about all these independent metal bands that were selling 60-70-80 thousand records and they would sign them and try to market them through AOR radio and nothing would happen." As a result, almost overnight, Concrete was marketing and promoting heavy metal groups for practically every major label.

Jazz Collection: Phil Collins – der Schlagzeuger als Superstar Dienstag, 26. Januar 2021, 21.00 – 22.00 Uhr, SRF 2 Kultur Samstag, 30. • MARK SPICER Genesis's Foxtrot* One of the Most Ironic
MARK SPICER Genesis’s Foxtrot* One of the most ironic developments in Billboard chart history occurred in July 1986, when Genesis, basking in the success of having finally scored their first (and only) U.S. #1 hit with Invisible Touch were knocked out of the top spot just one week later by their former frontman Peter Gabriel, who, in turn, scored his first (and only) U.S. #1 with Sledgehammer. While I must admit to having a personal affection for their later records, I think it is safe to say that most fans would prefer to forget the slick, synthesizer-driven pop that characterized much of Genesis’s output in the 1980s and 1990s, and instead look back fondly to the first half of the 1970s — the golden age of British progressive rock — when the group was famous for crafting epic rock pieces in which the multiple shifts of texture, affect, tonality and groove echo those typically found, say, in a large-scale symphonic work by Liszt or Holst. Like Yes, Emerson, Lake & Palmer (ELP), Gentle Giant, King Crimson, Jethro Tull, Soft Machine, Henry Cow, and their other compatriots in British progressive rock during this remarkable period, Genesis did not set out to create music that was immediately catchy or danceable (although one can certainly imagine dancing, however awkwardly, to many of their odd-metered grooves). Theirs was serious music intended for serious listeners. Indeed, as John Covach has put it, “there was the perception [among fans] that these musicians were attempting to shape a new kind of classical music — a body of music that would not disappear after a few weeks or months on the pop charts, but would instead be listened to (and perhaps even studied), like the music of Mozart, Beethoven and Brahms, for years to come.” (Covach, 1997: 4) Figure 1 shows a chronology of Genesis albums released through October 1977, when guitarist Steve Hackett left the group and the three remaining members decided to continue as a trio.

  • Headhunting Jazz Drum Master Mike Clark
Headhunting jazz drum master Mike Clark BY AL CARLOS HERNANDEZ ON FEBRUARY 20, 2013 HOLLYWOOD (Herald de Paris) – When two of the best musicians on the planet decide to combine their estimable talents to create a band without boundaries, the result is the Wolff & Clark Expedition. Dizzy Gillespie famously said that jazz must have, “One foot in the past and one in the future.” With the Wolff & Clark Expedition, the music embraces the past, ventures into the future, but remains rooted in the improvisational present. Drummer Mike Clark is a true percussion legend – Clark gained worldwide recognition as one of America’s foremost jazz and funk players while touring and recording with Herbie Hancock’s group in the early 1970’s. Mike became known as a major innovator through his incisive playing on Hancock’s ‘Thrust’ album which garnered him an international cult following. While often referred to as the “Tony Williams of funk,” Mike, a JAZZ musician, has, in fact, become one of the most vital to ever sit behind a set. He has performed with jazz greats Herbie Hancock, Wayne Shorter, Tony Bennett, Bobby Hutcherson, Christian McBride, Joe Henderson, Woody Shaw, Wallace Roney, Donald Harrison, Nicholas Payton, Fred Wesley, Vince Guaraldi, Chet Baker, Larry Coryell, Eddie Henderson, Geri Allen, Billy Childs, Chris Potter, Bobby McFerrin, Al Jarreau, Dave Liebman, Oscar Brown Jr., Lenny White (Mike has a two-drummer band with Lenny called “New Brew”), Mose Allison, Gil Evans and his Orchestra and many more luminaries. Mike is currently finishing his forthcoming solo CD ‘Indigo Blue’, which features Randy Brecker, Christian McBride, Donald Harrison, Rob Dixon and Antonio Farao.

  • Brand X Came and Went, out of London’S Great Musical Watershed Moment: The’70S—
The mighty Brand X came and went, out of London’s great musical watershed moment: the’70s— Chances are, you’ve never heard of this trailblazing virtuoso Rock, Funk & Jazz fusion band who cast its legendary spell on a once flourishing music scene. You’re in luck: they paid the price for their art, wandered through the desert, and returned to make some truth! A band’s journey through the wilderness. BRAND X — The Desert Years INTRODUCTION TO A FILM PROJECT: A film with music and stories following a band’s astounding journey through the wilderness. Last date of the tour. A blanket of snow has covered these parts of Eastern Pennsylvania overnight. The sun has already peaked, and, in a few hours, Brand X will give the last performance in this leg of their North Eastern reunion tour. English guitarist John Goodsall, 64, paces outside the old theater, wrapped in an oversized sweatshirt; he blows on his fingers for warmth, waiting for the SUV carrying the band’s gear—including his two electric guitars—to back into its proper parking spot. Welch born bassist Percy Jones, 69, is already pushing a 2-wheel dolly carrying his speaker cabinet up the backstage loading ramp. Veteran American drummer Kenwood Dennard, 61, is assembling his drum kit to the right of the stage. Brand X only has one roadie, Edward J. Murphy III, and he’s tied-up, hooking the gear up to rented monitors. They are joined for the sound check by the more ‘junior’ American members Scott Weinberger and Chris Clark.
