    Playing (with) Gestic Dolls in Mabou Mines DollHouse Jacqueline Taucar University of Toronto 268 To nineteenth-century audiences and critics, Nora’s final action in Henrik Ibsen’s A Doll House1 was characterized as the “door slam heard around the world”; its echoes reverberate over the 130 years since its theatrical debut in 1879 across numerous cul- tural lines as this special issue of the Canadian Review of Comparative Literature attests. In the nineteenth century, Ibsen’s decision to have Nora close the door and leave her husband and children shocked the sensibilities of its audience at the time, but its “shock value” has since declined in contemporary western contexts where divorce rates are at an all time high at close to forty percent2 and where women’s participation in the public sphere is greater now than it was in Ibsen’s time period. Still A Doll House remains an enduringly popular play; however, for theatre practitio- ners who stage Ibsen’s iconic play the question always emerges of how to re-imagine Nora’s historic door slam in a way that continues its revolutionary legacy and speaks to the very different limitations and conditions of being a woman in society today. The 2003 production by Mabou Mines, co-created by avant-garde theatre artists Lee Breuer and Maud Mitchell, is one such revolutionary re-imagining of Ibsen’s A Doll House that critiques patriarchal power inherent in the system of commodity con- sumption in today’s society. Emphasizing the doll as an object of consumption and a powerful performative motif, Mabou Mines DollHouse3 (hereafterDollHouse ) adapts Ibsen’s work and re-captures the “shock effect” of the original through visual con- trast.

Tiny Tootsietoys are big with collectors By Eric Bryan Almost any American who lived in the 20th century will know the name “Tootsietoy.” Most famous for producing diecast toy cars, Tootsietoy continues making toys to this day. The diecast vehicles came in the familiar pocket-car size, but Tootsietoy also produced models in larger scales. Readers who shopped at five-and-dime stores will remember being able to buy some of the Tootsietoy cars loose from wooden trays, and in the 1960s and ‘70s the smallest ones were available in blister-packs. One of the Thorne rooms — an English cottage kitchen of the Queen Anne period (1702-14), made in about 1937. It is 10 inches high. Credit James Casebere for The New York Times Down a center flight of marble stairs in the front entrance hall of the Art Institute of Chicago, there is a real-life time machine. It bears no resemblance, however, to any such devices from fiction. There are no displacement spheres, quantum-leap accelerators or flux capacitors; it looks nothing like H.G. Wells’s gilded time-sleigh with its gleaming dinner platter, crystal-knobbed control lever and plush velvet driver’s seat. Indeed, this particular time machine doesn’t even have space for passengers, a fact that becomes immediately apparent upon approaching it. There is only a roomful of wide-eyed drifters trying to project themselves, via intensely prolonged gazes, through a series of glass-paned portals, tilting their torsos and craning their necks as if trying to inhabit the miniature worlds beyond. The institute’s Thorne Miniature Rooms collection comprises 68 deftly dwarfed and obsessively detailed re- creations, on a scale of one inch for every foot, of English, French and American household interiors ranging from the 13th to the 19th century. Each one is, in essence, a fully fixed and furnished moment from a bygone day. Adults peering in on these little dioramas become children again, and their children the suddenly more mature and seasoned guides to the Tom Thumb fantasies the rooms contain — the minuscule violin resting in an open case on the cushioned window seat of a circa-1800 English drawing room, for instance, or the swath of afternoon sunlight cast across a pair of glasses and a porcelain tea set on a late-18th-century Cape Cod living- room table.

Select a larger box to be a room. 2. Turn the box on its side so that the opening is facing you. You should have a floor and 3 walls! 3. Decide how you will decorate. Will your floor be made of “wood” (draw it with marker) or carpet (a piece of old blue jeans or fabric)? 4. Decorate your walls. Will they be painted or will you use “wallpaper” (paper glued to the walls)? 5. Think of other features that rooms might have, such as ceiling lights, ceiling fans, or a chandelier - can you make these from things you have? 6. Decide what type of room you have created and what type of furniture it needs. 7. Is it a kitchen? What can you use to make a table & chairs? A refrigerator? Can you use small bottle caps for plates? 8. Is it a bedroom? How can you build a bed? Can you cut pieces of cardboard and tape them together to make a bed? What can you use for a blanket (a piece of an old t-shirt)? 9. Is it a living room? How will you make a couch? A TV? A bookshelf? 10. Are there any other decorations you can create? A clock? A picture frame? How Does it Work? Models and dollhouses have been popular since the 1500s! Tiny rooms and the objects inside are reduced to the same ratio, or scale, with items in real life.
