College of Letters & Science UNIVERSITY OF WISCONSIN-MADISON ZoologyNews for Alumni and Friends of the Department of Zoology NowWinter 2012 Lions and Bison and Mollusks and More The UW’s Zoological Museum trains interns to prepare and display specimens hree white-coated Tstudent interns huddle over the remains of a female African lion in the University of Wisconsin-Madison Zoological Museum’s specimen-preparation room. Huge paws, still furry and whole, hang over the table edge, while the students patiently pick at tendons and membranes in the exposed rib cage, neck, and skull. Once the skeleton is completely disarticulated, it will be sent to the flesh-eating dermestid beetle colony in a subterra- nean room near Birge Hall. Then, after the bones are thoroughly cleaned, they will be added to the museum’s osteology collection and made available for research purposes. Without interns to help with such difficult tasks, the museum could not accept specimens such as Vilas the lion, euthanized in the sum- mer of 2012 and donated by Madison’s Henry Vilas Zoo. Ollman, Leah. “(L.A. in N.Y.) Thomas Fougeirol | Tony Marsh at albertz benda” Carla, April 2021, contemporaryartreview.la/ print-issue-24 (L.A. in N.Y.) Thomas Fougeirol | Tony Marsh !t !lbertz bend! J!nu!ry 7– Febru!ry 13, 2021 The pandemic-induced restrictions of the past year have forced a prolonged intellectual and creative hibernation for many makers. For others, though, the chain of undifferentiated months has been liberating rather than debilitating, freeing them to expand beyond entrenched borders of work and thought. Ceramic sculptor Tony Marsh belongs to the latter category, and his new tabletop vessels presented at albertz benda (installed in a two-person show with the process-driven paintings of Thomas Fougeirol) demonstrate vividly what, for him, lockdown seems to have unlocked. In his nascent series, Spill and Catch (all works 2020), Marsh relaxes his grip on order and symmetry, suspending his glazed surfaces in liquid looseness and indulging in uncharacteristically luscious, exuberant color. 66 Marsh is no stranger to chance and improvisation, but these new works diverge, and by including representative pieces from two other established, ongoing series, the show made it clear just what they diverge from. His Crucibles (all 2020) adhere to a single, basic template: weighty, straight-sided cylinders barnacled with globular chunks of clay, glazed and reglazed, baked and re-baked, to a crusty finish. Each work in this decade-long investigation fuses the metaphorical and literal meanings of its title; each pocked and cratered vessel has repeatedly endured the trial of extreme heat. The molten gold-and-orange surface of one Crucible appears to still exude heat.

  • Skins and the Impossibility of Youth Television
Skins and the impossibility of youth television David Buckingham This essay is part of a larger project, Growing Up Modern: Childhood, Youth and Popular Culture Since 1945. More information about the project, and illustrated versions of all the essays, can be found at: https://davidbuckingham.net/growing-up-modern/. In 2007, the UK media regulator Ofcom published an extensive report entitled The Future of Children’s Television Programming. The report was partly a response to growing concerns about the threats to specialized children’s programming posed by the advent of a more commercialized and globalised media environment. However, it argued that the impact of these developments was crucially dependent upon the age group. Programming for pre-schoolers and younger children was found to be faring fairly well, although there were concerns about the range and diversity of programming, and the fate of UK domestic production in particular. Nevertheless, the impact was more significant for older children, and particularly for teenagers. The report was not optimistic about the future provision of specialist programming for these age groups, particularly in the case of factual programmes and UK- produced original drama. The problems here were partly a consequence of the changing economy of the television industry, and partly of the changing behaviour of young people themselves. As the report suggested, there has always been less specialized television provided for younger teenagers, who tend to watch what it called ‘aspirational’ programming aimed at adults. Particularly in a globalised media market, there may be little money to be made in targeting this age group specifically.

  • Excerpts from Dialogues
EXCERPTS FROM DIALOGUES (A) Excerpt from The Fault in Our Stars, a novel by J. Green (Penguin). Augustus Waters pushed himself out of his chair and walked over to me. His gait was crooked like his smile. He towered over me, but he kept his distance so I wouldn’t have to crane my neck to look him in the eye. “What’s your name?” he asked. “Hazel.” “No, your full name.” “Um, Hazel Grace Lancaster.” He was just about to say something else when Isaac walked up. “Hold on,” Augustus said, raising a finger, and turned to Isaac. “That was actually worse than you made it out to be.” “I told you it was bleak.” “Why do you bother with it?” “I don’t know. It kind of helps?” Augustus leaned in so he thought I couldn’t hear. “She’s a regular?” I couldn’t hear Isaac’s comment, but Augustus responded, “I’ll say.” He clasped Isaac by both shoulders and then took a half step away from him. “Tell Hazel about clinic.” (B) Excerpt from Skins (TV series), Series 1, Episode 8. Anthea and Jim (parents to Tony and Effy) are accusing Tony of giving Effy drugs. Anthea: I suppose we should congratulate you for getting her clean drugs. Tony: You think this was me? Anthea: She was with you. Tony: I wasn't. I was... Jim: Don't deny it. Anthea: Tony, she's your little sister. Tony: I know. I know. But listen, for a second... Anthea: No. I've had enough of listening to you.
