15 Recent Statements by Agudath Israel and The Rabbinical Council of America Re- garding Women Rabbis To place the following two articles, regarding the ordination of women as rabbis, in perspective we present, in chronological or- der, the following statements issued by Agudath Israel and The Rabbinical Council of America. Ed. Statement of the Moetzes Gedolei HaTorah of America (10 Adar 5770) [February 25, 2010]1 Rabbi Avi Weiss has conferred “semikha” upon a woman, has made her an Assistant Rabbi at the Hebrew Institute of Riverdale where she carries out certain traditional rabbinical functions, and has now given her the title of “Rabbah” (formerly “Maharat”). He has stated that the change in title is designed to “make it clear that Sara Hur- witz is a full member of our rabbinic staff, a rabbi with the addi- tional quality of a distinct woman’s voice.” These developments represent a radical and dangerous departure from Jewish tradition and the mesoras haTorah, and must be con- demned in the strongest terms. Any congregation with a woman in a rabbinical position of any sort cannot be considered Orthodox. Talking (Long Distance) About Jewish Education Oorah: Knocking on Doors and Imagine a new family moves onto the block. To be friendly, the Changing Lives next-door neighbor invites the family for a Shabbos lunch. Shabbos arrives, and as the guests walk through the door, the hostess gently says, “You know, it’s customary to send a little gift along before Shabbos when you’re invited out.” A while later, one of the guest’s young children announces that he hates the gefilte fish. It doesn't taste like Mommy's. So the hostess helpfully informs the guest that her child has bad manners and should be taught how to refuse food politely. Then she instructs her own child not to learn from this young visitor. “Nothing personal, you know,” she tells the guest. “We just don’t want him to pick up any bad habits.” After the meal, the conversation flows in various directions. The father of the visiting family – an avid follower of local politics -- brings up the recent school-board elections. The host interrupts quickly to enlighten the guest: “This isn’t really an appropriate topic for the Shabbos table,” he softly advises. Welcome to the Family If the guests pursued this relationship any further, it would be a remarkable testimony to the power of forgiveness. The scenario seems unthinkable. But putting oneself in the guests’ place is instructive; it conveys the feeling that frequently rises in the heart of a newly religious person who is entering the religious world.

Because they aren't in Yeshiva R'tzahd. Without the benefit of a yeshiva education, Jewish children reach for sandwiches on Seder night instead of matzos. And when they do, it's not just the taste of unleavened bread they're missing-it's their heritage; their pride; their place in history That's why we at R'tzahd have been working so hard to offer all Jewish children, regardless of background or financial situation, the opportunity to receive a true, Torah education. Since 1969, hundreds of children with little or no Hebrew background have entered our open doors and emerged as proud, observant Jews who have gone on to study at the finest secondary yeshivas ln this endeavor we at R'tzahd are long on drive, conviction and eager students.
