St. Charles Lwanga Parish: Muyeye, Malindi, Kenya (East Africa)

Here is a little background on the new assignment for Fr. Sossy Luyembe, S.J. Father will be assigned as the new PASTOR in a brand new parish on the coast: St. Charles Lwanga Parish: Muyeye, Malindi, Kenya (East Africa) St. Charles Lwanga is the newest parish for both the Jesuits in Eastern Africa Province (our sixth parish) and the Catholic Diocese of Malindi (their nineteenth parish). Malindi is a young diocese, founded in June 2000. The church established the Malindi Diocese for the purpose of evangelization and interreligious dialogue. When it was established in 2000, the 600,000 population of the area was 95% Islam, compared to only 4% Catholic. Today, Catholics are about 8% in Malindi. It is a young, but fast growing church, with a lot of hope! The new parish has about 3,000 Catholics. The Muyeye area, where the parish is located, is the outskirt of Malindi town. Muyeye is inhabited by a mixture of low-income earners and middle-income earners (66% live below poverty line). The young Francis Xavier landed in Malindi in 1542 en route to India. While in Malindi, he buried two Portuguese sailors. On that burial site today is a little chapel named in his honor, “St. Francis Xavier Chapel,” aka “The Portuguese Chapel.” It was built in the 16th century and still stands today. Currently on the parish grounds, there is a small church building that used to be an outstation. A new church building is under construction and will hold an estimated 600. There are three Sunday masses. Daily Mass is available every morning, and in afternoon hours, there is a rotation of Masses celebrated at several Small Christian Communities in the outlying areas of Muyeye. Among the greatest challenges faced by the people in Muyeye are poor education, poor sanitation, HIV/AIDS, early marriages, unsafe drinking water and gender violence. On the pastoral front, we have an increasing number of Christians but with limited number of pastoral agents. As a new parish, our needs are enormous! We consider the following as our most urgent requests: transportation for pastoral work (a car), a rectory for 4 Jesuits, furnishings, safe drinking water (a well), equipping the parish office, a solar power system for the parish church, and improving the existing nursery school. Sediment dynamics and improvised control technologies in the Athi River drainage basin, Kenya SHADRACK MULEI KITHIIA Postgraduate Programme in Hydrology, Department of Geography and Environmental Studies, University of Nairobi, PO Box 30197, 00100 GPO, Nairobi, Kenya [email protected] Abstract In Kenya, the changing of land-use systems from the more traditional systems of the 1960s to the present mechanized status, contributes enormous amounts of sediments due to water inundations. The Athi River drains areas that are subject to intense agricultural, industrial, commercial and population settlement activities. These activities contribute immensely to the processes of soil erosion and sediment transport, a phenomenon more pronounced in the middle and lower reaches of the river where the soils are much more fragile and the river tributaries are seasonal in nature. Total Suspended Sediments (TSS) equivalent to sediment fluxes of 13 457, 131 089 and 2 057 487 t year-1 were recorded in the headwater areas, middle and lower reaches of the river, respectively. These varying trends in sediment transport and amount are mainly due to the chemical composition of the soil coupled with the land-soil conservation measures already in practice, and which started in the 1930s and reached their peak in the early 1980s. This paper examines trends in soil erosion and sediment transport dynamics progressively downstream. The land-use activities and soil conservation, control and management technologies, which focus on minimizing the impacts of overland flow, are examined to assess the economic and environmental sustainability of these areas, communal societal benefits and the country in general.

Kenya Tana River Basin Road Construction Projects (I) and (II) Report Date: October 2002 Field Survey: July-August 2001 1. Project Profile and Japan’s ODA Loan Site Map Project Site (Near Garsen) 1.1. Background Kenya’s economy remains largely dependent on exports of its main agricultural products such as coffee and tea . The largest constraint on the country’s agricultural sector was insufficient rain, making land less productive. It was therefore necessary to develop an irrigation system using water resources from the Tana River, the longest river in Kenya. The Tana River Development Agency was founded in 1974 to promote the Tana River Area Development Program, with a focus on irrigation. Especially, in downstream of Tana River, large scaled irrigation plan had been implemented. For the successful development of Tana River area including the irrigation plan, the development of road network was inevitable. The conditions of roads in downstream areas deteriorated so badly that the roads were inaccessible during the rainy season, and even during the dry season, the road traffic was not easy. Given this situation, the Government of Kenya decided to implement the Tana River Basin Road Construction Project (hereinafter referred to as “Project I”) and requested for Japan’s ODA Loan in 1980. During the implementation of Project I, however, financial constraints of the Government of Kenya in appropriating local-cost materials caused significant delays in the road construction. The situation in Kenya at that time, attributed to various factors including deterioration of its economy, caused such financial constraints, which had not been foreseeable at the time of appraisal.

The evaluation examined the strategic positioning of UNFPA as well as its contribution to the results set out in the three programming areas – sexual and reproductive health, gender equality and women’s empowerment, and population dynamics. The evaluation was based on a comprehensive review of documents covering both the programming and implementation stages in accordance with the newly developed Handbook of the Evaluation Branch on How to Design and Conduct a Country Programme Evaluation at UNFPA. This was followed by an intensive field work for further data collection and validation of preliminary findings. The field work included individual and group interviews, focus groups and site visits. The evaluators worked to obtain the perspectives of all stakeholders and systematically ensured the validity of collected data by means of triangulation techniques. Specific evaluation criteria were formulated during the preparation phase, which focused on relevance, efficiency, effectiveness and sustainability in three focus areas of the country programme and strategic alignment, responsiveness and added value. The evaluation was complemented by an analysis of the monitoring and evaluation system of the country programme.

Jomo Kenyatta International Airport in Nairobi, Kenya, is one of the airports in the eastern region of Africa that is seeking to fill this role. Ancient Afro-Asia Links: New Evidence from a Maritime Perspective Caesar Bita Abstract Historical records have shown that the East African coast was connected to ancient global trade networks. These early overseas contacts are evidenced by references to trading voyages in the early 1 st millennium AD and in the 11 th to 14 th century AD. During these periods, exports to India, China and the Persian Gulf included skins, horns, ivory and gold, whilst pottery, glass, textiles and beads were imported. Maritime archaeological studies have produced pottery, beads and shipwrecks that have showed links between East Africa and the Middle East, Indian sub-continent and China. Furthermore, historic Kenyan coastal settlements such as Mombasa, Malindi and Lamu were important port towns of call for merchant shipping, as they were strategically sited along busy sea-lanes. This paper examines this historical connection between ancient Kenyan coastal towns and the Asian continent. It explores results of previous and ongoing underwater archaeological research in Malindi and Lamu archipelago that has produced evidence of Asian cultural heritage. The East African coast littoral of the Western Indian Ocean (WIO) is referred to as the "Swahili coast" and its coastline extends for 3000 km from 1° North in Somali to 25° south to the mouth of Limpopo (Morgan 1973; Sanseverino 1983; Kusimba 1999). The dimensions of this coast cover the coastal littoral and the off-shore islands of Lamu, Pemba, Zanzibar and the Comoros (Chami 1998:199-218; Horton 1984; Sutton 1990).
