The document de- scribes the so-called OpenCV 2.x API, which is essentially a C++ API, as opposite to the C-based OpenCV 1.x API. The latter is described in opencv1x.pdf. OpenCV (Open Source Computer Vision Library) is an open source computer vision and machine learning software library. OpenCV was built to provide a common infrastructure for computer vision applications and to accelerate the use of machine perception in the commercial products. Being a BSD-licensed product, OpenCV makes it easy for businesses to utilize and modify the code. The library has more than 2500 optimized algorithms, which includes a comprehensive set of both classic and state-of-the-art computer vision and machine learning algorithms. These algori- thms can be used to detect and recognize faces, identify objects, classify human actions in videos, track camera movements, track moving objects, extract 3D models of objects, produce 3D point clouds from stereo cameras, stitch images together to produce a high resolution image of an entire 1 scene, find similar images from an image database, remove red eyes from images taken using flash, follow eye movements, recognize scenery and establish markers to overlay it with augmented reali- ty, etc. -

However, as business requirements grow more complex, limitations in the web programming model might become evident. With the advent of techniques such as AJAX, the bar has been raised for what users have come to expect from web applications. To successfully implement a large-scale web application, software developers need to have knowledge of a big set of complementary technologies. This thesis highlights some of the current problems with the web programming model and discusses how using desktop technologies can improve the user experience. The foundation of the thesis is an implementation of a prototype of a central hotel property management system using web technologies. These technologies have then been compared to an alternative set of technologies, which were used for implementing a second prototype; a stand-alone desktop client distributed using Java Web Start.
