Cette publication n’est pas seulement une reconstruction subjective de la bande dessinée FLORENCE LOEWY 9-11 rue de thorigny 75003 Paris, France +33(0)1 44 78 98 45 [email protected] Francesc Ruiz’s new show at Florence Loewy Gallery Florence Loewy Gallery, with its three main walls, is a renewed approach to some of the leading issues to the idea of an enveloping wall of televisions as he has been developing in his most recent work: explored in «Fahrenheit 451», a kind of premonitory the use of comics as cultural material understood in interactive television in the age that preceded internet all its facets within the context of contemporary art; and the current trend for big flat-screen televisions. the exploration of dissident sexualities through the This image suggests the dissolution of broadcasting hidden historiographies of drawing and comics; and and at the same time shows its obsolescence which the analysis of mass media and its current status makes the image recognizable only to an older as a place of thought where freedom of expression generation of cathodic ray consumers. and censorship intermingle with the hegemonic perpetuation of a certain dominant subjectivity and its The exhibition as a whole takes us to different disintegration. places to speak of technology, censorship, dystopic futurism, forgotten pasts and saturated presents. It The title «No Words, 3 Walls, 3D Porn» is borrowed also speaks of the materialisation of the virtual and from three of the mass communication medias the dematerialization of our bodies, in a hermeneutic mentioned in Ray Bradbury’s novel «Fahrenheit 451»: movement that brings together a book, a movie comics with no text, TV walls and three-dimensional and a contemporary art gallery devoted to artists’ porn magazines. publications. The starting point of the show is a series of images Francesc Ruiz is represented by Galeria Estrany – de derived from the publication «Fahrenheit 451’s Comic» la Mota, Barcelona by Francesc Ruiz, published by Captures éditions and launched on the occasion of this exhibition. The publication is the reconstruction of a prop from the film directed by François Truffaut in 1966: a comic without text that the main character browses for a few seconds while lying in bed. The 8-page publication contains some original images of the comic from the movie itself and others taken from the still film images from the shooting and was completed after research on styles and authors of the period, mixing some material borrowed from James Bond comic strips (Truffaut’s film was shot in Pinewood Studios in London with the same production team as the James Bond movies) with new content that helps to understand the meaning of both the film and the novel, adding a new narrative perspective. Truffaut did not show any 3D porn magazines in his film, probably due to censorship issues or because he found it unnecessary in his plot adaptation, but the idea of the 3d porn magazine is present in our desire to re-materialize something virtual like this comic. Just as Truffaut turned text into image in his adaptation of the novel, so we act as a contemporary prosumer now that virtual and augmented reality frame the future of our relationship with technology, of which the next step resides in the material world and the question of how we can bring the digital into our physical reality. This publication is not only a largely subjective reconstruction of the comic that appears in the film, it is also an exercise in restoration and a reflection upon the status of comics as a mass media reviled in the Ray Bradbury dystopia. Accompanying this comic reproduction, a wall painting showing a television screen links the space of the FLORENCE LOEWY 9-11 rue de thorigny 75003 Paris, France +33(0)1 44 78 98 45 [email protected] Vue de l’exposition No Words, 3 Walls, 3D Porn, Galerie Florence Loewy, Paris Photo : Aurélien Mole FLORENCE LOEWY 9-11 rue de thorigny 75003 Paris, France +33(0)1 44 78 98 45 [email protected] Vue de l’exposition No Words, 3 Walls, 3D Porn, Galerie Florence Loewy, Paris Photo : Aurélien Mole FLORENCE LOEWY 9-11 rue de thorigny 75003 Paris, France +33(0)1 44 78 98 45 [email protected] Vue de l’exposition No Words, 3 Walls, 3D Porn, Galerie Florence Loewy, Paris Photo : Aurélien Mole FLORENCE LOEWY 9-11 rue de thorigny 75003 Paris, France +33(0)1 44 78 98 45 [email protected] Vue de l’exposition No Words, 3 Walls, 3D Porn, Galerie Florence Loewy, Paris Photo : Aurélien Mole FLORENCE LOEWY 9-11 rue de thorigny 75003 Paris, France +33(0)1 44 78 98 45 [email protected] Vue de l’exposition No Words, 3 Walls, 3D Porn, Galerie Florence Loewy, Paris Photo : Aurélien Mole FLORENCE LOEWY 9-11 rue de thorigny 75003 Paris, France +33(0)1 44 78 98 45 [email protected] FAH (1), 2016, Encre de Chine et aquarelle sur papier, 30 x 40 cm (extrait du diptyque 8-1) Photo : Aurélien Mole FLORENCE LOEWY 9-11 rue de thorigny 75003 Paris, France +33(0)1 44 78 98 45 [email protected] FAH (2), 2016, Encre de Chine et aquarelle sur papier, 30 x 40 cm Photo : Aurélien Mole FLORENCE LOEWY 9-11 rue de thorigny 75003 Paris, France +33(0)1 44 78 98 45 [email protected] FAH (3), 2016, Encre de Chine et aquarelle sur papier, 30 x 40 cm Photo : Aurélien Mole FLORENCE LOEWY 9-11 rue de thorigny 75003 Paris, France +33(0)1 44 78 98 45 [email protected] FAH (4), 2016, Encre de Chine et aquarelle sur papier, 30 x 40 cm Photo : Aurélien Mole FLORENCE LOEWY 9-11 rue de thorigny 75003 Paris, France +33(0)1 44 78 98
