Casiple and Jalali Named to Capital One All-Academic District 8 First Team by CoSIDA California (13-4-2, 6-3-1 Pac-12) has certainly been a success on the field thus far this season, but they are also succeeding in the classroom as well. Junior midfielders Seth Casiple and Omid Jalali both were named to the 2013 Capital One All-Academic District 8 First Team, the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) last week. The athletes selected to each team are recognized as the nation’s top student-athletes for their combined performance in athletics and academics. The Academic All-District teams are divided into eight geographic districts across the United States and Canada. As first team selections, Casiple and Jalali are eligible to be selected for Capital One Academic All-America honors, which take place later this month. Casiple, an anthropology major, boasts a 3.43 grade-point-average and posted two goals and six assists in the regular season. He has appeared in 54 games for the Bears in his career. Jalali, a pre-med business administration major, has a 3.85 grade-point-average. Jalali made 17 regular season appearances and three starts for the Golden Bears and tallied four goals and one assist.

Eight Bears Earn All-Pac-12 Honors The California Golden Bears (13-4-2, 6-3-1 Pac-12) were represented by eight players on All-Pac-12 teams, the conference announced last week. Defender Steve Birnbaum and Christian Dean earned first team honors, while midfielders Alec Sundly, Seth Casiple, forward Stefano Bonomo and goalkeeper Justin Taillole were named to the second team and midfielders Connor Hallisey and Ryan Neil earned honorable mention nods. Eight players are the most the Bears have placed on All-Conference teams since they had nine in 2008. Cal, Stanford and Washington had the most representatives of any Pac-12 teams with eight apiece. Birnbaum, the team’s leading goalscorer and one of the co-captains, posted nine goals and one assist in 16 regular season appearances. This marks the second time in his career that the fifth-year senior has been named to the conference’s first team, after doing so during his junior season in 2011. Dean was an All-Pac-12 honorable mention last season, and this year was an anchor alongside Birnbaum in the Bears’ central defense. He started all 18 of Cal’s regular season matches, posted four assists out of the back and was instrumental in Cal’s five shutouts during the 2013 season. Sundly, another co-captain had a very successful senior campaign, finishing the regular season with six goals and one assist from his central midfield role in 17 appearances, all starts. Three of those goals were gamewinners, which tied for the second most in the conference behind Pac-12 Player of the Year Leo Stoltz from UCLA. Casiple, a junior and co-captain was Sundly’s central midfield partner. He finished the regular season as the team’s leader in assists with six, and also notched a pair of goals in 18 games played. This marks the second consecutive season in which Casiple has garnered All-Pac-12 second team honors. Taillole ranked second in the conference with a 0.83 goals-against-average and .774 save percentage. He also posted five shutouts for Cal, and concluded the regular season with a record of 12-3-2. Bonomo was a fixture in Cal’s lineup up top, and tallied five goals and three assists in 18 appearances during the regular season. The junior forward had a knack for scoring big goals as well, as two of them were gamewinners. Bonomo was also named as an All-Pac-12 honorable mention last season. Hallisey finished his regular season with two goals and a pair of assists and is an All-Pac-12 honorable mention for the second time in his career (2011). Neil posted a goal and four assists for the Bears and earns conference recognition for the second consecutive season, after being named to the All-Pac-12 second team in 2012.
