PINHOOKERS= PARADISE AS BIZAKOV TO UNITE STUDS UNDER SUMBE BANNER FOAL SEASON BEGINS Nurlan Bizakov will unite his British and French studs, Hesmonds Stud and Montfort et Preaux, under the same name: Sumbe, for his birthplace in Kazakhstan. Bizakov said, ATo understand this decision, you have to go back in time. I was born in Kazakhstan in the city of Sumbe. Nestling at the foot of the country's highest mountain, it's a region famed for its agricultural produce and the quality of its horse breeding. I think that these 'country' roots--embedded in an environment where the horse was very present--naturally influenced my decision to breed racehorses. AAt Hesmonds Stud, I was initially able to rely on a very high-class team. Over a period of around 20 years, and under the stewardship of stud manager Tony Fry, it became one of the most modern studs in Britain. Further down the line, but in Normandy, I had the opportunity to acquire Montfort et Preaux: a stud farm run by another man of repute, Mathieu Alex. There Selwood Bloodstock=s session-topping Iffraaj colt is a very good rapport between my British and French teams and Laura Green/Tattersalls they work together.@ Cont. p6 By Emma Berry NEWMARKET, UKCThe popularity of first-season sires is no new phenomenon but it is a feature of the market which apparently gains more and more traction, and three freshmen were responsible for four of the top 10 lots as pinhookers wasted no time in assembling their prospective yearling drafts for next season. The first session traditionally represents a quieter start to the four-day auction, which builds towards the better pedigrees on Friday. With shorter sessions throughout the sale this year, there were 135 foals sold on Wednesday, compared to 168 on the same day last year, meaning that the aggregate of 1,585,100gns, which was down by just 7%, actually represented an improved performance from 2019. Indeed, both the average and median were up, by 16% and 60% respectively, at Golden Horde | Sumbe 11,741gns and 8,000gns, while the clearance rate of 67% was just one point lower.

CALIFORNIA COVID-19 UPDATE GLOBAL CAMPAIGN by Dan Ross RETIRED TO WINSTAR News last week that more than 200 people living or working on-site at Golden Gate Fields had tested positive for COVID-19, and that the facility would have to close its doors to live racing through November, arrived against a state-wide backdrop of rising cases, hospitalizations and COVID-related deaths. As with Golden Gate, these trends have landed with subsidiary impacts. Over the weekend, L.A. County public health officials suspended outdoor restaurant dining. Before that, the county announced other restrictions, including curfews and capacity limitations at certain stores and other public places. This has prompted some within the industry to wonder whether other California tracks might fall foul of the reimposition of business restrictions--as happened at Santa Anita earlier in the year, for example, when the facility was temporarily closed as the pandemic first took grip. California COVID-19 Update cont. from p1 year, when an outbreak among the SoCal jockey colony was blamed by some on lax protocols at the track's jock's room--an accusation track management hotly denied. Los Alamitos is in Orange County, another region where COVID cases, hospitalizations and deaths are on the rise. WOODBINE OFFICIALS NEGOTIATING FOR POSSIBLE CONTINUATION OF RACING Despite a mandatory 28-day lockdown of Toronto and one of its suburbs, officials at Woodbine Racetrack remain in negotiations with the Ontario government as they seek permission to complete the 2020 Thoroughbred season. The lockdown went into effect Monday, Nov. 25, at 12:01 a.m. and allows for training and stabling of horses at the track, but live racing has been canceled. An update late Tuesday from Woodbine read: ASince being permitted to race without spectators in early June, Woodbine Entertainment has demonstrated that live racing poses no greater health risk to participants than training. Furthermore, it believes it has clearly demonstrated an ability to safely operate live racing without spectators during that time. ABased on the timing of these ongoing conversations, live racing on Thursday, Nov. 26 and Friday, Nov. 27 has been cancelled. Should Government make the decision that live racing is permitted to safely resume, Saturday, Nov. 28 would be the earliest date. This would require entries to be submitted on Thursday morning. AFurthermore, if Woodbine Entertainment is permitted to complete the 2020 Thoroughbred meet, it will endeavour to reschedule the cancelled races. AWoodbine Entertainment will continue to provide updates as they become available.@

WEST POINT FOUNDER TERRY FINLEY JOINS WRITERS= ROOM

Founder, president and CEO of West Point Thoroughbreds Terry Finley joined the TDN Writers= Room presented by Keeneland Wednesday to discuss an array of industry issues and potential solutions. Calling in via Zoom as the Green Group Guest of the Week, Finley provided his insights on how the game can better attract new customers, whether or not racing=s drug problem is finally going to be cleaned up, the evolution of the owner partnership and much more. Asked about how his friends who are casual observers of racing view the sport, Finley said he thinks the perception is improving thanks to the industry=s belated but united response to its equine safety and drug crises. AThe people we want to influence and impact are, by and large, reasonable, and all they want is for us to take these things that we=re not proud of as an industry seriously,@ he said. AAnd I think we=ve shown over the last two years that we get it. We got our heads picked up. So I think they appreciate that. People come into the business and give us all a chance to show that we=re doing everything we can to give them a fair shot. I think we=re really starting to catch their attention in a sensible way and I=d like to think that we=re on the way to continuing to grow. I=m optimistic that we=re on the right track. I appreciate that a number of people and organizations have come to the table and compromised. When we=ve done that in the past, good things have happened, and I really think good things are on the way for us if we stay at the table and don=t get mad at each other. We all get frustrated at the pace of change in our business, but it=s all about an evolution.@ The discussion then turned to March=s FBI indictments and how Finley thinks the alleged cheating scandals have affected participation in the sport. because they=re waiting for that phone call,@ he said. AWe=ve got to take our medicine as an industry, because we let it happen. I think we got beat in seven graded stakes races by those two turkeys, where we finished second or third behind Jason Servis or Jorge Navarro. So when I=ve talked to people in the last eight months about the Horseracing Integrity and Safety Act, I=ve said, >Listen, they=ve taken money out of my pocket and my partners= pockets.= We=ve lost partners in the last eight months because they said the industry has had a long time to clean this up. Now we finally did it and I was very proud of the job that The Jockey Club did. We=re going to keep after this. That=s the only thing I can see that=s going to be effective long term, is to just stay vigilant and try to identify the guys who are taking an edge and cheating.@ Elsewhere on the show, the writers talked about the latest coronavirus-related interruptions to the racing calendar, previewed a big holiday weekend of graded stakes, and in the spirit of Thanksgiving, revealed what they=re thankful for in racing. BODY & SOUL: DON'T LOOK NOWY WELL, MAYBE WE'D BETTER by Robert D. Fierro

Uncle Mo | Coolmore photo This business about sire lines has been driving your correspondent a bit nuts for the past 40 years, dating from when he first came to understand the realm, initially through the discourses of the great analyst Dr. Franco Varola and the estimable author Abe Hewitt. As a result, we are faced with a wide variety of macro and mini "sire lines" these days, real or imagined--none of which we are going to explore today. Rather, we are going to look at what may be developing right under our noses, and why it is a potential ground shifter. That would be the rather remarkable fact (as of this writing) that the Leading Freshman Sire and two others among the top five on that list are sons of one of the top three Leading General Sires. In addition, those three freshmen sires are from the first crop of their sire's sons with foals of racing age. We are speaking, of course, about Nyquist, Laoban, and Outwork, plus their big daddy, Uncle Mo. What sparked our interest was a nagging curiosity about how a Uncle Mo=s leading freshman sire son, Nyquist | Darley photo stallion like Uncle Mo could come out of the clouds of sire-line TDN HEADLINE NEWS • PAGE 10 OF 12 • THETDN.COM THURSDAY • NOVEMBER 26, 2020

PIES DONATED TO MJC BACKSTRETCH WORKERS AND FOOD BANK For the past 32 years, the Maryland Jockey Club has had a tradition of handing out free pies to its patrons during its Thanksgiving Day program. Along with live Thoroughbred racing at Laurel Park, fans would arrive in the morning to free cider, coffee and donuts, and leave with an apple or pumpkin pie. This year, with no fans in attendance for Thursday's live program, the Maryland Jockey Club didn't want to stop the tradition of giving away pies. So 1,500 pies were ordered as usual, with 500 going to backstretch workers at Laurel and Pimlico and the remaining 1,000 to the Maryland Food Bank. "During these extraordinary times our strict protocols for everyone's safety and security do not allow us to have fans at Laurel Park this Thanksgiving, but we didn't think it should stop a tradition of giving thanks," said Sal Sinatra, President and General Manager of the Maryland Jockey Club.
