Dear Customer, Young Norwegian soprano Lise Davidsen has gradually been garnering attention in recent years, perhaps making the leap to a wider awareness following her award of Gramophone’s ‘Young Artist of the Year’ in 2018 and her sublime performance of Strauss’s ‘Morgen’ at the ceremony. Ariadne was her major role last year; 2019 sees her take on the part of Elisabeth in Tannhauser - Zurich and Munich have already had the pleasure and she will be taking it to Bayreuth in July, under the baton of Valery Gergiev in a brand new production. Pleasingly for those of us who won’t manage to catch her live, her debut album on Decca has just been released, featuring two arias from Tannhauser plus orchestral lieder (and one aria) by Richard Strauss. We have been hugely impressed, especially considering her mere 32 years of age, making it a clear choice for Disc of the Month. Please see our website for our full review. Other new releases to highlight for June include a second lieder recital from Decca, performed by none other than Renee Fleming; Hyperion issue the latest in their series of ‘Romantic Violin Concertos’, this volume featuring works by Lassen, Scharwenka and Langgaard; the Vaughan Williams Society offer us his works for viola and piano via the Albion label; the final instalment in the Halle’s superb Ring Cycle (Siegfried) is released on the Halle’s own label; and stunning vocal ensemble Vox Luminis give us a treat in the shape of works by the Bach Family. -

La Norma al San Carlo: 'N tiemp' 'e tempesta ogni ppertuso è ppuorto..... Al San Carlo di Napoli va in scena in questi giorni la Norma di Bellini. E’ l’occasione per fare alcune osservazioni forse abbastanza nuove: perché dimenticate. La prima: sul podio c’è Nello Santi, che dirige con una straordinaria unione di musicalità, autorità e senso pratico derivantegli dall’esperienza: inoltre adopera un’edizione corretta contenente la seconda parte del coro Guerra, guerra, mancante anche nel recente allestimento della Fenice, che vedeva sul podio un giovane promettente e già rivelatosi annegato nella praticaccia, Gaetano D’Espinosa. Il grande maestro a settembre compirà ottantacinque anni. Oggi in grado di dirigere la difficillima partitura altrettanto bene ci sono solo, non in Italia, al mondo, Elio Boncompagni, prossimo e compire gli ottantatré, Gabriele Ferro, prossimo a compire i settantanove, Riccardo Muti (specie se correggerà gli errori di scelta dell’edizione), che a luglio compirà i settantacinque, e Donato Renzetti, che a gennaio ne ha fatti sessantasei. Nessuno fra quelli venuti dopo ha la cultura, la tecnica e l’esperienza per affrontare uno dei vertici dell’intero teatro musicale. La difficoltà tecnica e stilistica di partiture come la Norma, che i non italiani non immaginano nemmeno, rende inetti allo scopo anche maestri che in Wagner e Strauss fanno benissimo. Se dovessi pensare a un non italiano in grado di fare bene la Norma il solo che mi viene è il coltissimo e bravissimo inglese Mark Elder (1947), il quale è con Renzetti il ragazzo della comitiva. Or il ruolo della protagonista è quello di soprano drammatico di agilità. -

Intense international touring and a series of acclaimed recordings for Philips Classics, later for Channel Classics have contributed to Iván Fischer’s reputation as one of the world’s most visionary and successful orchestra leaders. He has developed and introduced new types of concerts, ‘cocoa-concerts’ for young children, ‘surprise’ concerts where the programme is not announced, ‘one forint concerts’ where he talks to the audience, open-air concerts in Budapest attracting tens of thousands of people, and he staged successful opera performances. He has founded several festivals, including a summer festival in Budapest on baroque music and the Budapest Mahlerfest which is also a forum for commissioning and presenting new compositions. As a guest conductor Fischer works with the finest symphony orchestras of the world. He has been invited to the Berlin Philharmonic more than ten times, he leads every year two weeks of programs with the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra, and appears with leading us symphony orchestras, including the New York Philharmonic and the Cleveland Orchestra. Earlier music director of Kent Opera and Lyon Opera, Principal Conductor of National Symphony Orchestra in Washington dc, his numerous recordings have won several prestigious international prizes. Iván Fischer studied piano, violin, cello and composition in Budapest, continuing his education in Vienna in Professor Hans Swarowsky’s conducting class.
