    IAVA Recipient: Secretary Mattis Letter: Greetings, First, thank you for your service and sacrifice and for your incredible leadership that so many in the military and veteran community have experienced and respect. As you know, more than 1.5 million veterans have have educated themselves with the Post-9/11 GI Bill, and almost 70% of Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans of America (IAVA) members have used or transferred this benefit to a dependent. It could very well be the most transformative federal benefit created. The new restriction on Post-9/11 GI Bill transferability to only those with less than 16 years of service is a completely unnecessary reduction of this critical benefit, and it will ultimately hurt our military recruitment and readiness. In a time of war, it remains enormously important to recruit and retain qualified servicemembers, especially with an ever-decreasing pool of eligible recruits. For years, IAVA has been at the forefront of this fight. We led the effort to establish this benefit in 2008 and we have successfully defended it in recent years. We cannot allow our GI Bill to be dismantled or abused. This is why I am standing with my fellow IAVA members to respectfully request that you reverse this counterproductive policy change that creates barriers to access to these transformative benefits. The GI Bill has been earned by millions of men and women on the battlefield and around the world and it should not be subjected to arbitrary restrictions that limit its use. Again, thank you for your leadership and I ask that you take action now to reverse this decision.

During this unprecedented global pandemic, the Senate has partnered with an infectious disease team at Tampa General Hospital and hired an in-house epidemiologist to develop safety protocols designed to reduce the spread of COVID-19 and keep Senators and our Senate professional staff as safe as possible. Just like our Senators and staff, you also play an important role in the legislative process. Input from various stakeholders and members of the public is critical, and the Senate is working diligently to ensure Floridians have access to their elected officials as we consider important legislation for our state. Until the COVID-19 vaccine is widely available for those outside of high-risk designation, the Senate is proceeding with care and caution, limiting in-person meetings, and observing social distancing guidelines, mask requirements, and sanitation protocols. For the 2021 Regular Session of the Florida Legislature, the Senate is working in partnership with Florida State University to reserve three remote viewing rooms at the Leon County Civic Center, which provide the opportunity for members of the public to view meetings and virtually address Senate committees in a safe, socially distant manner. We owe it to our shareowners, employees and customers to advocate public policies that will enable us to compete fairly and freely in the marketplace. Political contributions are one way we support the democratic electoral process and participate in the policy dialogue. Our employees have established political action committees at the federal level and in 20 states. These political action committees (PACs) allow employees to pool their resources to support candidates for office who generally support the public policies our employees advocate. This report lists all PAC contributions, corporate political contributions, support for ballot initiatives and independent expenditures made by Verizon in 2012. The contribution process is overseen by the Corporate Governance and Policy Committee of our Board of Directors, which receives a comprehensive report and briefing on these activities at least annually. We intend to update this voluntary disclosure twice a year and publish it on our corporate website.     FROM MARCH 9, 2021 ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT SB 1592 – Relating to Broadband Internet Infrastructure On Tuesday, March 9, SB 1592 by Senator Danny Burgess (R-Zephyrhills) was heard by the Senate Regulated Industries Committee and was reported favorable with 9 yeas and 0 nays. AIF’s Senior Vice President of State and Federal Affairs, Brewster Bevis, stood in support of this legislation. The bill provides a procedure for access by broadband providers for attachments to utility poles of municipal electric utilities. It provides for the adoption of rates, terms, and conditions for the access to the poles consistent with federal requirements for pole attachments. Additionally, the bill prohibits municipal electric utilities from preventing broadband providers from using certain techniques and equipment in the installation of attachments which are done in accordance with established safety standards. The bill also prevents municipal electric utilities from requiring a broadband provider to comply with pole attachment specifications that exceed existing codes standards. SB 1592 will now go to the Senate Finance and Tax Committee. AIF supports increased access to broadband internet as quality connectivity has become imperative to business operations across the state, especially during a time when so many businesses are operating remotely. SB 148 – Relating to Beverage Law On Tuesday, March 9, SB 148 by Senator Jennifer Bradley (R-Orange Park) was heard by the Senate Commerce and Tourism Committee and was reported favorable with 11 yeas and 0 nays. AIF’s Senior Vice President of State and Federal Affairs, Brewster Bevis, stood in support of this legislation. Under current law, qualifying restaurants may be licensed to sell beer, wine, and liquor for consumption on the premises only.
