Volume 32 Number 2 www.fsbgc.org Spring 2018 OUTSTANDING YOUTH AND VOLUNTEERS HONORED AT ANNUAL FSBGC DINNER Former NBA and Razorback star Ronnie Brewer was guest speaker for the 2018 FSBGC Awards Dinner held on March 15 at the Evans Boys & Girls Club. Brewer, who played professional for 9 seasons, was very complimentary of the volunteers who help support Club programs. “I grew up at the Boys & Girls Club in Fayetteville and my dad grew up a member in Fort Smith” said Brewer. “The Boys & Girls Club gives you a sense of belonging and there are volunteers who truly care about helping kids” he added. During the event, Ronnie Brewer shared stories about his childhood and his journey to the NBA. Daren Bobb, news anchor for KFSM–TV 5 served as emcee. Brewer was accompanied by his mother Carolyn Brewer. Sponsored by the Alumni & Friends Association, the annual event drew Club supporters, community leaders, volunteers and members. Brewer, who was a first round NBA pick by the , shares a unique record with his father Ron. They are the only father–son combination in the history of the . Powers Spring 2018 www.fsbgc.org Page 3 REMEMBERING FSBGC Impacted by SPECIAL FRIENDS Legacy of Sally Frick With a heart for helping others, Sally Baum Frick left a generous gift of $67,000 for the Fort Smith Boys & Girls Club upon her passing on August 23, 2017. “This was her way of saying thank you to an organization that helped her family” said Elvin Frick, her widower. Both of Sally’s sons, Bill Shumate and David Shumate, were members of the Club. Elvin and Sally were both widowed when they met at Fred Astaire’s Dance studio nearly 30 years ago. He was 62 and she was 57. Julie Fenby, a senior at Southside High and a 12 year member of the Evans Boys & Girls Club represented Fort Smith in the state competition. Fenby, along with two other contestants, were named in the top 3 out of 12 competitors. “It was Regional Art Museum field trip – members of the Stephens and a great experience” said Fenby, who won a $500 Jeffrey Boys & Girls Clubs visited R.A.M. during Spring Break scholarship from the state event. “Meeting the and worked on a sand art project. The 9-week session is scheduled from May 29 through July 27. The activity fee for summer participation is $25. All four Club sites will provide free breakfast and lunch to participants. COACH FRANQUA BEDELL CAPURES NATIONAL TITLE Former Fort Smith Boys & Girls Club member Franqua “Q” Bedell led his Tallahassee Community College women’s basketball team to the 2018 NJCAA national championship on March 24. The 11th seeded Eagles defeated Trinity Valley 69-51 in the title game in Lubbock, Texas, to give the program its first national championship. Bedell is in his fifth season as the head coach of the program. SPORTS Free Baseball Clinic On May 1 at Goldtrap Boys & Girls ages 6–14 are invited to take part in a free baseball clinic sponsored by Chevy Youth Sports. The event will take place at Goldtrap Boys & Girls Club on Tuesday May 1 from 5:30 p.m. til 8:30 p.m. Over the years, Chevy Youth Sports has provided several Sports clinics at the Club, including soccer and baseball.
