    Does Media Concentration Lead to Biased Coverage? Evidence from Movie Reviews∗ Stefano DellaVigna Alec Kennedy UC Berkeley and NBER San Francisco Federal Reserve Bank [email protected] [email protected] September 14, 2011 Abstract Fueled by the need to cut costs in a competitive industry, media companies have be- come increasingly concentrated. But is this consolidation without costs for the quality of information? Concentrated media companies generate a conflict of interest: a media outlet can bias its coverage to benefit companies in the same group. We test empirically for bias by examining movie reviews by media outlets owned by News Corp.–such as the Wall Street Journal–and by Time Warner–such as Time.Wefind a statistically significant, if small, bias in the review score for 20th Century Fox movies in the News Corp. outlets. We detect no bias for Warner Bros. movies in the reviews of the Time Warner outlets, but find instead some evidence of bias by omission: the media in this group are more likely to review highly-rated movies by affiliated studios. Using the wealth of detail in the data, we present evidence regarding bias by individual reviewer, and also biases in the editorial assignment of review tasks. We conclude that reputation limits the extent of bias due to conflict of interest, but that nonetheless powerful biasing forces are at work due to consolidation in the media industry. ∗PRELIMINARY AND INCOMPLETE, DO NOT CITE WITHOUT PERMISSION. Clark Honors College in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Bachelor of Arts June 2018 An Abstract of the Thesis of Dana Alston for the degree of Bachelor of Arts in the Department of Cinema Studies to be taken June 2018 Title: Capturing Turmoil: New Hollywood as Political Discourse Approved: _______________________________________ Dr. Erin Hanna This thesis is an argumentative close analysis of themes, aesthetics, and political meanings within three New Hollywood films. It emerged out of an interest in the films of the 1960s and 70s and the changes within that era’s film industry. Those changes granted young, educated filmmaker opportunities to helm studio-driven projects, weaving material into their narratives that would have been impossible in a system ruled by the Hollywood Production Code. The era also included significant social and political unrest, and the films therein reflect that reality. In this project, I perform content analyses for three films within the New Hollywood movement — Bonnie and Clyde (1967), Dog Day Afternoon (1975), and Nashville (1975) — in order to understand how films in the movement used themes of celebrity, violence, and oppression to act as a form of discourse. All three films employ on-screen violence to complicate the audience’s initial assumptions of characters, and each film critiques the social and political issues of its time through this violence. For each analysis, I discuss several sequences’ mise-en-scène — the arrangement of elements within the entire frame — and connect them to broad socio-political ideas.

Femininity”). However, Dahlbeck had already established herself as a star long before her collaborations with Bergman. The popularity of Bergman’s three comedies (Waiting Women (Kvinnors väntan, 1952), A Lesson in Love (En lektion i kärlek, 1954), and Smiles of a Summer Night (Sommarnattens leende, 1955)) suggests that they catered to the Swedish audience’s desire to see the star Dahlbeck. To explore the interrelation between Swedish post-war popular film culture and the auteur Bergman, this thesis examines the stardom of Dahlbeck, who can, as inter-texts between various films, bridge the gap between popular film and auteur film. Focusing on the decade from 1946 to 1956, the process whereby her star image was created, the aspects that constructed it, and its relation to her characters in three Bergman titles will be analysed. In doing so, this thesis will illustrate how the concept “Pansarskeppet kvinnligheten” was interactively constructed by Bergman’s films, the post-war Swedish film industry, and the media discourses which cultivated the star cult as a part of popular culture.

    GRANDEUR DE LA PETITE FORME L’image de Bergman que je préfère, c’est celle des films 16 mm documentant ses tour- nages des années 1960, il fait beau, il est souriant, enfantin même, il est alors directeur du théâtre de Malmö où toute la saison durant il enchaîne les productions, puis quand l’été vient, que c’est relâche, il mobilise sa troupe pour tourner un film où cinéma, vacances, amours semblent se mêler en une utopie qui est peut-être la clé de cette dualité qui définit son œuvre. L’envers étant la dépression qui, plus tard, sera la source de certains de ses chefs-d’œuvre. La singularité de Bergman tient à ce qu’avant tout, la parole s’incarne. Le rapport à l’in- terprète n’est pas la vérification de l’écriture mais sa transcendance. Cette alchimie est ce qui est à l’œuvre de plus profond et de plus mystérieux dans le cinéma, son essence BERGMAN INGMAR même. Et c’est la découverte de cette vérité particulière, fragile et éphémère, sur le visage de ses acteurs, de ses actrices, qui définit l’espace le plus intime, le plus secret du cinéma et que Bergman n’a eu de cesse d’explorer, au-delà des mots. Mais que s’est-il passé en 1982 ? Quand Bergman annonce, il a soixante-quatre ans, qu’il ne fera plus de films après Fanny et Alexandre.     GSC Films: S-Z Saboteur 1942 Alfred Hitchcock 3.0 Robert Cummings, Patricia Lane as not so charismatic love interest, Otto Kruger as rather dull villain (although something of prefigure of James Mason’s very suave villain in ‘NNW’), Norman Lloyd who makes impression as rather melancholy saboteur, especially when he is hanging by his sleeve in Statue of Liberty sequence. One of lesser Hitchcock products, done on loan out from Selznick for Universal. Suffers from lackluster cast (Cummings does not have acting weight to make us care for his character or to make us believe that he is going to all that trouble to find the real saboteur), and an often inconsistent story line that provides opportunity for interesting set pieces – the circus freaks, the high society fund-raising dance; and of course the final famous Statue of Liberty sequence (vertigo impression with the two characters perched high on the finger of the statue, the suspense generated by the slow tearing of the sleeve seam, and the scary fall when the sleeve tears off – Lloyd rotating slowly and screaming as he recedes from Cummings’ view). Many scenes are obviously done on the cheap – anything with the trucks, the home of Kruger, riding a taxi through New York. Some of the scenes are very flat – the kindly blind hermit (riff on the hermit in ‘Frankenstein?’), Kruger’s affection for his grandchild around the swimming pool in his Highway 395 ranch home, the meeting with the bad guys in the Soda City scene next to Hoover Dam. The encounter with the circus freaks (Siamese twins who don’t get along, the bearded lady whose beard is in curlers, the militaristic midget who wants to turn the couple in, etc.) is amusing and piquant (perhaps the scene was written by Dorothy Parker?), but it doesn’t seem to relate to anything.
