Email: [email protected] Introduction Three families in the superfamily Calopterygoidea occur in China, viz. the Calo- pterygidae, Chlorocyphidae and Euphaeidae. They include numerous species that are distributed widely across South China, mainly in streams and upland running waters at moderate altitudes. To date, our knowledge of Chinese spe- cies has remained inadequate: the taxonomy of some genera is unresolved and no attempt has been made to map the distribution of the various species and genera. This project is therefore aimed at providing taxonomic (including on larval morphology), biological, and distributional information on the super- family in South China. In 2009, two series of surveys were conducted to Southwest China-Guizhou and Yunnan Provinces. The two provinces are characterized by karst limestone arranged in steep hills and intermontane basins. The climate is warm and the weather is frequently cloudy and rainy all year. This area is usually regarded as one of biodiversity “hotspot” in China (Xu & Wilkes, 2004). Many interesting species are recorded, the checklist and photos of these sur- veys are reported here. And the progress of the research on the superfamily Calopterygoidea is appended. Methods Odonata were recorded by the specimens collected and identified from pho- tographs. E-mail: [email protected] Abstract Twelve species of urothripine Phlaeothripidae are recorded from China, including two new species that are described and illustrated here, Stephanothrips austrinus sp. n. and Urothrips calvus sp. n. A new key is provided to the urothripine spe- cies known from China together with new collection data. Key words: leaf-litter thrips, Phlaeothripinae, Stephanothrips, Urothrips, new species Introduction The urothripines are a group of fungus-feeding Phlaeothripinae species living mainly in leaf- litter of the tropics and subtropics. This group is generally characterized by the head usually being strongly tuberculate, abdominal segment IX more than twice as long as segment VIII, and the tube usually greatly elongate and bearing very long anal setae (Mound 1972; Okajima 2006). It is generally considered an enigmatic group, not only by its bizarre external morphology, but also by its generic classification. A total of 17 genera had been proposed as the Tribe Urothripini by Stannard (1970), however, the ambiguous generic definitions within the Urothripini in that paper were not widely accepted. Subsequently, the complicated patterns of variation amongst urothripines were discussed by Mound (1972), who treated four genera, Verrucothrips, Ramachandraiella, Transithrips and Bournieria, as junior synonyms of Baenothrips. -

Interaction and Social Complexity in Lingnan during the First Millennium B.C. FRANCIS ALLARD SEPARATED FROM AREAS north of it by mountain ranges and drained by a single river system, the region of Lingnan in southeastern China is a distinct physio graphic province (Fig. 1). The home of historically recorded tribes, it was not until the late first millennium B.C. that Lingnan was incorporated into the ex panding Chinese polities of central and northern China. The Qin, Han, and probably the Chu before them not only knew of those they called barbarians in southeastern China but also pursued an expansionary policy that would help es tablish the boundaries of the modem Chinese state in later times. The first millennium B.C. in Lingnan witnessed the development of a bronze metallurgy and its subsequent widespread use by the seventh or sixth centuries B.C. Archaeological work over the last decades has led to the discovery of a num ber ofBronze Age burials scattered over much of northern Lingnan and dating to approximately 600 to 200 B.C., a period covering the middle-late Spring and Autumn period and all of the Warring States period (Fig. 2). These important discoveries have helped establish the region as the theater for the emergence of social complexity before the arrival of the Qin and Han dynasties in Lingnan. Nevertheless, and in keeping with traditional models of interpretation, Chinese archaeologists have tried to understand this material in the context of contact with those expanding states located to the north of Lingnan. The elaborate ma terial culture and complex political structures associated with these states has usually meant that change in those so-called peripheral areas (including Lingnan) could only be the result of cultural diffusion from the center. -

FELLOWES, BOSCO P. L. CHAN, MICHAEL W. N. LAU, LIN JIAN-SHENG and LEE KWOK SHING Summary The literature on the past distribution and status of the White-eared Night Heron in China is reviewed, and updated based on recent field investigations and reports from Hubei, Jiangxi, Guangxi, Guangdong and Hainan. Recent records reveal the species to be more widespread than previously thought, but there remain many uncertainties about the area of occupancy and connectivity between known populations. The rate of discovery of new sites suggests the species may be under-recorded, but a number of recent sites have been lost, and no truly secure populations are known. There thus remains an urgent need for better information from throughout the species’ range, especially from historical sites, as well as increased protection. Introduction Since its discovery at Wuzhishan, Hainan Island, in 1899, the White-eared Night Heron Gorsachius magnificus has been recorded from eight provinces in southern China, together with two records from north-eastern Vietnam (BirdLife International 2001, 2004; He and Lin 2004). Until the end of the twentieth century, the recorded distribution of White-eared Night Heron in mainland China formed a horseshoe shape, with an empty core in the provinces of Jiangxi and Hunan (Figure 1). Available records suggest the species has a highly fragmented distribution and is extremely rare. -

Introduction The China Water Beetle Survey currently is celebrating its 10th anniversary. The first joint expedition, which launched the CWBS co-operation project of the Natural History Museum Vienna (Section of Coleoptcrology) and the Chinese Academy of Sciences (Institute of Applied Ecology, Shenyang), was carried out in autumn 1993. Since then, samples were taken from almost 500 aquatic habitats, and three volumes of the WATER BEETLES OF CHINA, containing numerous taxonomic revisions and accurate distribution maps, were published (see also JÄCH&JI 1995, 1998). Today, China cannot be regarded any more as "terra incognita" in terms of aquatic coleoptera. About 200 new species, eight new genera and one new family were described since 1993. During these 10 fruitful years, faunistic and ecological surveys were carried out in the following provinces (PR), autonomous regions (AR), municipalities directly under the Central Government (M), and special administrative regions (SAR) of Mainland China: Anhui (PR), Beijing (M), Fujian (PR), Gansu (PR), Guangdong (PR), Guangxi (AR), Guizhou (PR), Hainan (PR), Hong Kong (SAR), Hunan (PR), Jiangxi (PR), Jilin (PR), Liaoning (PR), Macao (SAR), Nei Mongol (AR), Shaanxi (PR), Shandong (PR), Sichuan (PR), Yunnan (PR), Zhcjiang (PR). -

Chan, Advisor Donald Winford Zhiguo Xie Copyright by Litong Chen 2012 Abstract This thesis reanalyzes data collected from published fieldwork sources and brings a new perspective to Shaoguan Tuhua, the genetically unclassified vernacular speech used in the Shaoguan area, northern Guangdong Province, China. The reanalysis consists of a quantitative study of the Shaoguan Tuhua varieties and some Hakka varieties (the regional lingua franca) and a contact linguistic study on one of the Shaoguan Tuhua varieties, Shibei Shaoguan Tuhua, and its Hakka neighbor, Qujiang Hakka. This thesis uses a combined methodology. It consists of the traditional Chinese dialectological research methods, phylogenetic network (computational) methods, and contact linguistic frameworks. Neither phylogenetic network methods nor contact linguistic frameworks are sufficiently used in Chinese dialectology. In terms of studying Shaoguan Tuhua, the use of these methodologies is new. This thesis first of all introduces the historical and sociolinguistic contexts of Shaoguan Tuhua. Shaoguan Tuhua has been in contact with Hakka for about seven hundred years, and Hakka speakers significantly outnumber Shaoguan Tuhua speakers. The majority of Shaoguan Tuhua speakers, especially the younger generation, can speak fluent Hakka. ii Based on the historical and sociolinguistic background, this thesis goes on to examine the result of the Shaoguan Tuhua-Hakka contact. -

NILSSON Abstract The Platambus specimens collected during CWBS expeditions between 1996 and 2001 were studied. The material includes the following five new species: P. dabieshanensis (Anhui), P. denticiilatus (Sichuan), P. heteronychus (Guangdong), P. micrapiinctatus (Guangdong), and P. yaanensis (Sichuan). The following new synonymies are given: Platambus jilanzhui WEWALKA & BRANCUCCI, 1995, and Agabus nakanei NlLSSON, 1997 both are considered junior synonyms of Agabus stygius REGIMBART, 1899 (now in Platambus). The paratype of Agabus stygius, earlier identified as Platambus insolitus (SHARP), here is identified as P. schillhammeri WEWALKA & BRANCUCCI, 1995. Consequently, P. insolitus is restricted to Japan. Platambus optatus (SHARP) is recorded from China (Fujian, Jiangxi) for the first time. Key words: Coleoptera, Dytiscidae, Platambus, China, taxonomy, faunistics, new species, new synonymies. Introduction My review of Chinese Dytiscidae (NlLSSON 1995) included ten named species of the genus Platambus THOMSON unambiguously recorded from China. Following my recent reclassification of the Agabus-group genera of the Agabini (NlLSSON 2000, 2001), the five species in the oplatus-group known from China have been transferred to Platambus from Agabus, increasing the number of Platambus species known from China to 15.
