It has been an historic World Series: The first outside the United States and the first won by a team based in Canada. And Pat "North of the" Borders was named MVP. Catchers in fact figured heavily in the course of this series. It was a World Series that demonstrated certain truisms of baseball: Good pitching dominates good hitting, and in a close series the weaknesses of a team become glaring. In both the case of the Blue Jays and the Braves this latter proposition was true.

  • Socal Vs. Nocal? No Contest the Best Rivalry in Sports Heats Up
SoCal vs. NoCal? No Contest The Best Rivalry in Sports Heats Up By Chris Brown and Casey Shearer It s the latter half of September, which means the fall breezes are blowing and the leaves are changing. The smell of hot-dogs and stale beer is in the air; everybody wants peanuts and Crackerjacks; children run home from school and head to the sandlot. All of which are symptoms of pennant fever. Or at least they should be. But as we look around, nobody seems to care about baseball at all. In what is usually the most exciting time of the year for baseball fans, that special excitement is somehow absent. Even as Mark McGwire and Ken Griffey Jr. chase Babe Ruth and Roger Maris, and Larry Walker chases the triple crown, something is missing: What's missing, kosher hot-dogs? A players? strike? Roy Hobbs? Steve Howe and his crack? The Cubbies? Has baseball become so unpopular so as to lose the interest of all its fans? Is it just that baseball lacks that type of hype, flashy color and big-money that basketball purports or the bone crushing thrills of football? No, what's missing are those heated races that lead to a bad case of pennant fever. With less than two weeks remaining in the season, the playoff picture is all but set in stone. In the American League, Baltimore owns the East, Cleveland looks to have the Central wrapped up, Seattle should win the West barring a major collapse, and the Bronx Bombers have sewn up the wild card.

But not quite. Francisco Cabrerra and Jose Lind saw to that. Lind's error extended the ninth inning, and Cabrerra's single ended it. Facing certain defeat the Atlanta Braves scored three runs to win 3-2 and the Pirates remain bridesmaids for the third consecutive year. Earlier in the day Toronto got a major monkey off its back by eliminating the Oakland A's. Every baseball game, every series, and every season has a certain personality or character. The National League Series won by Atlanta had a split personality. In the first two games the Braves dominated.

HISTORY NASHVILLE BASEBALL HISTORY The 2019 season signifies the 42nd season for the Nashville Sounds. It’s the 22nd season as a member of the 16- team Pacific Coast League, and the first as the Triple-A affiliate of the Texas Rangers. Despite the 42nd season as the Nashville Sounds, baseball’s roots in Nashville go back to the 19th Century. In fact, baseball has been played in Middle Tennessee since at least 1860, when the Republican Banner newspaper published a July 25th report on the game’s popularity the previous fall. During the Civil War, Union soldiers temporarily based here helped spread the game in the local community. Home field was a place known as the Sulphur Springs Bottom, a half-mile north of today’s state capitol. When the original Southern League was organized in 1885, Nashville was a charter city and games were played at Nashville’s Athletic Park, as the Sulphur Springs Bottom location came to be known. The city fielded several entries in the league over the next ten years -- the Americans (1885-86), the Blues (1887), the Tigers (1893-94), and the Seraphs (1895) -- but was unable to claim a pennant. When the Southern Association was formed in 1901, Athletic Park – which was later given the name Sulphur Dell by famed sportswriter Grantland Rice -- became the permanent home to the Nashville Volun- teers (or Vols, for short), who played there for the next 61 years. Under the guidance of manager Newt Fisher, the Nashville club won the SA’s first two pennants. The team, which was not known as the Vols until a “name the team” contest conducted prior to the 1908 season, continued to build a solid, loyal fan base.

Lyle Judy, “A Thiever & Another Ty Cobb” ©DiamondsintheDusk.com Playing for the Western Association’s Springfield Cardinals in 1935, Lyle Judy re- portedly sets baseball’s modern day base-stealing record with 107 stolen bases, eclipsing the existing record of 96 set by Detroit’s Ty Cobb in 1915. At the time, the actual record for organized baseball is 124 stolen bases set by James John- ston of the Pacific Coast League’s San Francisco Seals in 1913. Named the league’s MVP by the circuits’ official scorers, Judy steals second base 57 times, third base 32 times and home on 18 occasions. However, he does not have much luck against the Hutchinson Larks, with only seven steals in 13 at- tempts and being caught off first once. Several newspapers opine that Judy actually has more stolen bases than he is given credit for because “Class C official scorers can be expected to overlook details like that from time to time.” It’s noted by league scribes that as his steal totals mount up, more and more middle infielders and catchers are deliberately dropping the ball on his attempts so that they would be given a passed ball or an error rather than Judy be awarded a steal. When you add three stolen bases against Ponca City in the playoffs and two while playing with the St. Louis Cardinals after being called up in September, the fleet-footed infielder totaled 112 stolen bases over 152 games with Springfield (144) and St. Louis (8).
