White An Abstract of the Thesis Presented in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy (in Food and Nutrition Sciences) August, 2003 Teachers have an active role in helping to prevent and deter stigmatizing acts toward children labeled as "fat." The objective was to examine attitudes of obesity and their change processes among student teachers and schoolteachers, when exposed to a Web-based educational module promoting size acceptance, using the Elaboration- Likelihood Model (ELM). The ELM is a theoretical approach to message-based persuasion specifying conditions under which attitude change occurs. The theory was used to explain the impact of the module (content included etiological factors of obesity, implications of weight loss efforts, and emotionaVpsychosocia1 effects of obesity), high nutrition credibility of the module presenter (PhD, RD), and her appearance (digital image was altered to appear either "fat" or "nonfat") on attitude change. The effect of subject body mass index (BMI) on attitudes was also evaluated. The sample included undergraduate and graduate students from the University of Maine System as well as schoolteachers from the New England region. Subjects (n=258; mean age=26.8f 10.2) were randomly assigned to one of five groups (controVfour treatment groups). The treatment groups evaluated the effect of the module, credibility, credible %on-fat" source, and credible "fat" source on attitude change. Change was assessed on-line at pretest, posttest, and six-week follow-up using the Anti-Fat Attitudes Test (AFAT). AFAT is a Likert scale ranging from 1 = strongly disagree with negative attitude to 5 = strongly agree with negative attitude toward obesity. Additional tests were used to evaluate support for the ELM. Attitude means decreased in treatment groups between pretest (mean scores +standard error ranged from 1.912k0.062 to 1.995zk0.067) to posttest (1.724f 0.262 to 1.815+0.074) (p=0.000) and pretest to follow-up (mean scores ranged from 1.721k0.070 to 1.871+0.078) (pS0.006). Although attitude was not associated with subject BMI, exposure to the credible "fat" presenter more favorably influenced attitudes (i.e. posttest and follow-up) compared to the credible "non-fat" presenter (p<0.025). Communicating the size acceptance paradigm on-line appeared to reduce negative attitudes of obesity regardless of subject BMI. The findings support moderate elaboration based on the ELM. The presence of the credible "fat" source may have increased attention to the size acceptance message. DEDICATION I dedicate this dissertation to my most thoughtful and giving husband, Dave. Stigma involves several stereotypes that have negative psychosocial effects. The goal of this study was to evaluate the experience of social stigma in obese women with emphasis on their coping strategies. Methods: After the interview was done in the department with 24 Sleeve female candidate, their narratives were analyzed using descriptive phenomenological approach. Results: Results showed that obese women had undesirable experiences of social stigma. Nevertheless, they used coping strategies to adapt with new conditions. The main strategies revealed include social resistance; passivity; psychological problems and hysteria; extreme denial of self body image; social isolation; and ignorance of what others say (self empowerment). Conclusion: Social stigma of obesity affects the obese women negatively. With data from the Health Behaviors in School-Age Children Survey (2001-2002) we use OLS regression to examine the association between student, family, school, and peer domains and life satisfaction. We then model these relationships separately for obese and non-obese students. Family, school, and peer interactions with obesity are also considered. Lastly, we consider the association between family, school, and peer domains and life satisfaction by both obesity status and gender. Results indicate that family SES and number of same sex friends have a positive effect on life satisfaction for obese adolescents, while grades and peer acceptance affect life satisfaction for non-obese adolescents. The effect of family SES is stronger for obese girls than boys, while obese boys are more affected by perceptions of school safety. Implications of these findings and areas requiring further research are discussed. 1. Introduction American youth are on track to become the most obese generation of adults in history (Caprio, 2006). The Center for Disease Control reports an approximately 12% increase in obesity prevalence for both children and teens between 1980 and 2006 (CDC, 2009).     THE INDIRECT EFFECTS OF OBESITY The Wage Effects of Obesity in the U.S. Labor Market: Are Obese Paid Less Because of Health Insurance? Megan Mileusnic ABSTRACT Past economic literature has consistently found depressant effects of obesity on wage levels. However, the research provides mixed results on both the magnitude of the obese wage differential as well as a conclusive explanation for its occurrence. In this article, I use data from the Panel Study of Income Dynamics to further investigate the relationship among obesity, wages, and the hypothesis that obese workers with employer-provided health insurance pay for their higher medical expenditure through reduced wages. The results present evidence that obesity is a significant factor in determining women’s wage rates, reducing wages by 3.2%. Using a quantile regression approach, I find obesity to have larger depressant effects on wages at higher paying jobs for both men and women. Moreover, the interaction effects of obesity and employer-provided health insurance suggest women’s obese wage penalty is confounded in jobs offering health insurance. TABLE OF CONTENTS I. The prevalence of obesity in Europe is rising in many countries, and rising fastest in low socioeconomic population groups. There is a strong relationship between obesity and low socioeconomic status, especially for women. Reducing health inequities is a key strategic objective of Health 2020 – the European policy framework for health and well-being endorsed by the 53 Member States of the WHO European Region in 2012. This guide seeks to assist European policy-makers in contributing to achieving the objectives of Health 2020 in a practical way. It draws on key evidence, including from the Review of social determinants and the health divide in the WHO European Region. Despite general practice being the most utilised point of access for health care services, there has been very little international or national exploration of the experiences of large-bodied women accessing these services. Utilising a qualitative, descriptive research design, this post-structuralist feminist study has enabled a group of large-bodied women to express their stories of accessing general practice services. Eight self identified large-bodied women volunteered to participate in semi-structured face-to-face interviews. Thematic analysis identified seven themes: Early experiences of body perception, Confronting social stereotypes, Contending with feminine beauty ideals, Perceptions of health, Pursuing health, Respecting the whole person and Feeling safe to access care. The women in this study articulated broader interpretations of health and well- being than those teachings reproduced within dominant bio-medical and social discourses of obesity. When these women’s personal context, beliefs and values are silenced by the health care provider, the rhetoric of health care professional claims of patient-centred care has given way to these women experiencing stigmatisation and a sense of ambiguity about general practice services.

Each of the three elements from the title “Comparative Perspectives, Competing Explanations” is designed to produce a fruitful meeting frame: First, the notion of “comparative perspectives” is itself “accordion-like” and can fit a number of purposes and goals. There is the international aspect, so that we can incorporate a comparison of American sociology with international developments. There is the internal evolution of perspectives inside of the United States, which would include the development and emergence of challenging and oppositional perspectives in the discipline, from the Society for the Study of Social Problems, to Sociologists for Women in Society, to the Association of Black Sociologists, to name but a few organizational manifestations of the challenges of the last half century. The obese men’s desire to lose weight and their feelings of discomfort in situations focusing on their obesity was understood as a result of implicit anti-obese bias and the internalization of the social stigma of obesity.
