He “Everybody is ready to get their number called and come in and added five rebounds, two assists, a block and a steal in a 73-61 step up.” win. But he’s probably our best shooter and he’s learning defensively how to play in our system. I think he’s going to be a special player for us.”

Becker remembers being impressed with Steidl’s talents as a high- schooler -- as were a bunch of other college coaches. Among the other schools Steidl considered were Yale, Dartmouth, Brown, Northeastern and New Hampshire.

“I just thought he was really skilled,” Becker said. “He was 6-6 when he was 16, 17 years old -- he just turned 18 when he got to campus. I just thought his skill set was really good. He’s young, and as he gets older and matures, with his versatility he could play multiple positions. I just think his skill set is tremendous.”

Steidl wears jersey No. 34, the same number he wore his senior year at Ridgefield. That was the number worn by Ridgefield High basketball star and 1997 graduate Tyler Ugolyn, who died in the terror attack on the World Trade Center on Sept. 11, 2001. In- stead of retiring Ugolyn’s No. 34 jersey at Ridgefield, that num- ber is worn each year by the player who best exemplifies the qualities that Ugolyn embodied.

“I never met Tyler, but I met his dad a couple times, though,” Steidl said. “His dad is a really nice guy and he had some great things to say about his son. I learned a lot from his dad and I’ve kept in touch with him a little bit.”

On Wednesday at Yale, Steidl played only three minutes, which tied for his season low, and did not score a point. It was a tri- umphant homecoming nonetheless, and a large contingent of Steidl’s family members and friends packed into the John J. Lee Amphitheater.

It was a homecoming of sorts, too, for Becker, a Fairfield native who graduated from Roger Ludlowe High School in 1986. Both having come from the FCIAC, Steidl and Becker share a unique bond.

“I told Kurt I had 35 points -- my all-time high -- as a senior against Ridgefield,” Becker said with a smile. “Kurt didn’t want to believe that. He probably doesn’t even think the FCIAC was around back then, I’m so old. We joke all the time. That was an- other nice thing, being able to recruit a kid from my home area.”

All jokes aside, Becker is confident that Steidl will be a big part of Vermont’s success the next four years.

And he’s already well on his way. Official Basketball Box Score -- Game Totals -- Final Statistics Vermont vs UMBC 01-18-14 2:05 p.m. at RAC Arena, Baltimore, Md.
